Seventh Grade Science Syllabus and Procedures

2017-2018
Subject material We will be using an internet platform called STEMscopes (along with canvas
support). This will be your physical science year and we will begin with atoms of the periodic table.
There will be a field trip near the beginning of the year and then at the end of the year we will go over
a short life science unit.

Grading scale:
100 & up A+ 82 80% B- 66 63% D
99-93% A 79 77% C+ 62 60% D-
92 90% A- 76 73% C 59% - 0% F
89 87% B+ 72 70% C-
86 83% B 69 67% D+

Earning good grades require the cooperative effort of you putting forth your best effort, people at home
supporting you, and your teachers providing assistance and background knowledge within a caring learning
environment. If you are struggling, meet with the teacher for a tutoring session. Class websites are accessed
and you can bookmark the class website page msdivinescience.weebly.com

Assignments:
All written assignments should have your name, class period, and date on them in the upper corner. No
name means no credit/missing for the assignment and the paper is tossed in the recycling bin.
The Science Notebook (Journal) is the class textbook that you are putting together as you work.
Work is to be completed in pencil only, no ink will be accepted as we grade and correct in ink.

Late work: Late work policy for ALL classes in JH per building rules:
1. late work is considered any work not completed when time it is due. incomplete work will not be accepted to avoid a late penalty
deduction
2.. late work will only be accepted up until the Friday of the following week and will receive a 20% penalty

If Absent, If absent on labs, plan to makeup the lab within 3 days of your return. Check with me for available times
before and after school if help is needed. Any worksheets you missed will need to be asked for by you. Turn in absent
work to me personally. Turn in on time - one day for each day absent from school. If absent only on the testing day, the
test must be made up on the next available attendance day either in class or before/after school.

Small group labs: You should work together, not separately to collect data. In addition, individual
answers to reflection questions are also expected not asking your friend what they wrote down and
then writing yours please think through your own answer.

Please be a positive force in your group, so that all may enjoy the lesson.
Rules
1. You must be/stay in your seat before the bell rings or you are tardy and must sign in on the
tardy sheet. (Be Prompt)
2. Be prepared everyday : your science notebook AND a pencil and a good attitude.
a. In science class, unprepareds are also earned if you come to class unprepared and
Be Prompt did not bring your notebook, pencil, or paper. Two are allowed per quarter, but
(on time)
each third will result in an office referral.
3. Do your own work, make sure it is your answer and not your neighbors on your paper
that is being graded. I want to know what you still need help with.
4. (Be) Respectful. Speak at the appropriate times, not over another who is speaking. Raise
your hand to ask a question except in brainstorming breakouts. Show your bulldog pride in
yourself and the school.
5. Be in your seat unless you are instructed otherwise. Be Polite, please!

Rewards Verbal praise in class. Written note of appreciation sent

Extra time to review for the test. Improved grades
Personal satisfaction of a job well done. Good substitute comments

Consequences (in addition to what is in the student handbook)

Consequences for poor behavior in class may include being held after the bell, rearranged seating,
parent contact, and/or referral to office. If behaving poorly for a sub, loss of sub points and
possible referral. If cheating, a zero will be earned by both.

Laboratory Experiments:
The skills learned from one lab are carried through to a later lab in many situations.
Voices should never be louder than as if you are speaking to someone at arms length.
Students must follow experiment rules given by the teacher for the lesson or in directions.
Safety is always a consideration in science class. You will be held to the safety contract.
During experiments, if you are asked to give your attention, give it immediately as there
may be a safety concern.
Voices should be lowered so you might hear instruction.
The eyewash/shower station is for emergency use only.
A consequence of violating the safety contract that you signed will be to sit out of labs and work on
alternative bookwork until the teacher deems you able to join the class in labs again due to responsible
behavior and attitude being shown.

Tests: Each scope will have a short 5-10 question test of knowledge. If you do not pass your test, you are
allowed one retake. But you must check with the teacher for open times to be monitored during testing, if you
are choosing to retake a below mastery test.
You may retest over material on failed tests and I average the two scores. One retest is allowed
and must be taken within one week of the original testing day. Retests on quizzes are not given.

To contact me, please call the school at 649-7246, or email your
teacher
ldivine@cjr1.org and place the student name/initial in the subject
line. My planning
period is during fifth hour and emails are checked then and after
school.

The goal is for this to be an interesting and enjoyable year for the
students; yet
still learn the objectives and skills necessary for success. I wish for
the students to be involved in creating positive learning experiences
that they can apply to the real world within this science department.
