As you reading this briefing report the feasibility study of this project has been done.
This report consist of the summary of the project brief it tells you of what is this project
about. It tells you the summary of the current condition of the nearby location and
whose interest need to be taken for consideration in this project
Besides all of those information this report also consist of how we manage to do the
feasibility study of this project and also the project package that we propose to
undertake this project. Mostly for the project package we try to use the simplest method
in terms of construction method to reduce the output of this project.
And at the end it tells you the team assignment and time table of things need to be done
in this semester. And we hope that we could execute this project properly and get a
good result which satisfies the clients and road users needs

A. Project Brief Information Summary
Beam road that located in the northern suburb of Brisbane city is predominately
classified as an arterial road that connecting urban area and suburban area in the
regional network. Therefore, beam road has an important function in east-west
arterial routes as it also provide access to suburbs along its axis.
Although Beam road categorizes as an arterial road, beam road does not provide
a primary freight route access. However, since it connects the Sandgate road and
Stanworth road where it linking to the access of gateway motorway. Now beam
road allow a limited freight vehicle (19m semi-trailer,not oversize) to access the
road.
Nevertheless Beam road also can be categorized as an environment-friendly road
for the cycling and also have 2 lanes dual carriageway. The only problem is that
there are three train tracks which is the North Coast Railway Line (NCRL) with
40m width that cutting the Beam not perpendicularly also still in the form of open
level crossing (OLC). With the facts that all the community services located near
the Carseldine train station shows that lots of people crossing the OLC every.
Nonetheless if we it look from a safety point of view, open level crossing is not
suitable for current traffic flow. Also based on Queensland Level Safety Strategy
Annual Report, in 2012 2021 the strategy aims to:
o Eliminate Level Crossing Collision
o Reduce the number of near miss incidents at level crossings
o Minimize the impact of any incidents that occur
Since the current OLC giving high workload zone which inherently risky.
Therefore, in this project we are assign to replace the Beam road OLC with Grade
Separated Overpass of the NCRL
1
B. Project Task
o Design the structural design of a four lane, dual carriageway bridge overpass
of the North Coast Railway line and preserved northern busway
corridor(including barriers and gantry signage structure), with a left side
shoulder bicycle lane of 2.0m width on each carriageway, along with a
separate 2.0m pedestrian path on each of the north and south sides of the
overpass
o Design the structural design of a pedestrian ramp from the pedestrian on the
northern side of the overpass, to land indicatively adjacent to the present bus
interchange at the Carseldine railway station
2
C.1. Traffic analysis
in this part we need to take account for all of the property nearby and do the risk
management like whether we need to do the property acquisition or not, here
are the list of nearby property:
o South-west quadrant: public open space and sporting field
o South-east quadrant: car-wrecker yard
o North-east quadrant: 25m unformed preserved corridor for the proposed
future extension of the Northern Busway (north-south) with residential
estate immediately to its east
o North-west quadrant: Carseldine railway station park & ride lot, passenger
set-down facility and bus interchange facility
Moreover, we need to analysis the suitable height and width of the overpass
since we need to design it based on the corresponding train tracks width and the
height of the electricity pole plus the suitable degree of incline for the disability
people.

C.3. Geotechnical Engineering Analysis
o Preliminary maps analysis : to determine the road chainage for the overpass
construction.
o Contour maps analysis : is done to check whether the project location is
located above some geological anomalies or not.
o Soil analysis : is done to determine the soil property like the soil strength
and layer, that will be used for designing the suitable foundation.
o Overview the underground service maps : to make sure that the project will
not accidently destroy the underground services
Each steps are done consecutively so that if one of the pervious steps doesnt pass the
feasibility study the rest of the steps would not be done. For example if this project
conflict with the city council plan why we need to bother by building an overpass and
also if the project location is located above type of soil that only could support limited
amount of load and you need load of earth work then why you need to continue with
the design study if its already cost so much until this stage.

D. The Main Components of the Structural Study Area
D.1 Quantitative Analysis
o Overpass Measurements
In this part we going to analyze the appropriate length and width of the
overpass so that we not design it to close to the electrical pole or to high
o Load Analysis
In this part we going to analyze the maximum load which is the working
load that we could determine from the vehicle volume and traffic flow
and also the design load which the load that can be supported by our
structural design
o Soil properties
In this part we analyze the soil properties that affecting the calculation
of foundation design such as bearing capacity, coefficient, and water
table
o Forces
In this part we analyze and calculate all the forces that working in the
structure such as bending moment, shear forces, and axial forces
(compression and tension)
o Money resource or budget
Last but not least we need to balancing between our design and the
budget itself
5
o Weather impacts (to make sure the design is suitable with the usual
weather)
o Service installation along the overpass (ex/ storm water management,
cable installation, etc)
o Guide code
Concrete design code in Australia and Steel design Code in Australia,
all of these code is used so that the structure is safe and adequate.
o Ratio between the maximum load and allowable design load (ratio of
effectiveness)
6
D.4. Whose interests need to be taken into consideration (stakeholders)
o Nearby property owner
o Train commuter
o Bus commuter
o Nearby society
o KCC
o Road user
o Public transportation department
o Consultant
o Owner
o Environment
D.5. How long the time periods (e.g. times of day, week, year) and horizons (e.g.
opening, 10 years, 25 years, 50 years) are important for analysis?

Table. E.1.1 Foundation selection (Shaw, 2008)
After we know what types of foundation that appropriate for this project we
could start designing it by calculation all the forces. And then we could choose
how the construction of the foundation will be done. But from my point of view
everything that precast is much more efficient in time and man power. For the
materials its depending on the type of foundation it self
In this part of design first thing to do is we determine what will be the working
load of the overpass. And then we choose which type of structure that suitable
for the overpass. In our opinion we would go with the precast segmental double-
T concrete that will be design in a little bit of an arch shape. The reason why we
propose precast concrete structure is the fact that precast concrete is generally
more durable than cast-in-place/in-situ concrete because of the controlled
environment when the manufacturer producing the precast concrete. Besides ,
the precast also reducing the rate of cracking in the deck slab that making it less
penetrable (smith, 2012).
The other reason why this structure is much better than the conventional one is
that based in Li (Li, 2010) is that
o Double-T design are valid for a range of span length used in highway
overpass (which almost the same like Railway overpass)
o Double-T design can reduce the systems sensitivity to post-
tensioning losses
o Compare to the conventional one the system is competitive by
comparing material use, cost, scheduling and aesthetic criteria.
But the main reason why choose precast and shaped a little bit like arch is that
we can reduce the length of the overpass while maintaining the required height
so that the overpass did not hit the electrical pole of the rail ways. Moreover,
this shape also can help reducing the materials, time, money and all other
resources that will be used.

E.3 Pedestrian Ramp design
In this part of the design we would to propose a pedestrian ramp design that still
follow the guideline that affecting level of service. There are three main factors
which are physical characteristic factors, location factors, and user factors. And
in our design we try to keep maintaining some of the important point of factors
from each factors such as for physical characteristic the main point is support
facilities, location factors main point is connectivity, and for the user factor
main points are personal security and mix path user (Gallin, 2001). These are
the main guideline for us to designing the pedestrian ramp.
For the detailed design of pedestrian ramp itself we want to propose of using
steel structure and timber deck. The reason of why we choosing this design is
that to minimize the material cost and also reducing time of the construction
since steel structure is way much more simple to build than a concrete structure
for a small scale structure.
