TOPIC : PLASTIC SEALER

OBJECTIVES :

i. To familiairize with the operation and control panel of the plastic sealer
ii. To state the function of each control of the plastic sealer
iii. To measure the resistance readings of the plastic sealer heating elements
iv. To open and expose each component in the plastic sealer
v. To sketch and label the pictorial view of the plastic sealer
vi. To draw the schematic diagram of the plastic sealer
vii. To state the function of each component of the plastic sealer r
viii. To familiarize with each component inside the plastic sealer compartment

iii. The front panel of the plastic sealer is observed and our observation in our report
especially the control knob of the plastic sealer is recorded.
iv. Using an appropriate tool, the back cover of the plastic sealer unit is opened up and
the electrical connection of the plastic sealer is observed. The block diagram is drew
and the possible circuit diagram of the plastic sealer is drew.

v. Remove power supply plug of the plastic sealer from the 240V AC main supply
socket.
vi. Open up the back cover of the plastic sealer using an appropriated tool and the
electrical connection inside the plastic sealer is observed.
vii. Do not connect the plug to the main supply socket.
viii. Do the insulation resistance and short circuit test of the L(Live) N (Neutral) E(Earth)
connection of the supply cables by using multimeter or megger ohm meter. The
reading was recorded in Table 2.

ix. Each component in the plastic sealer compartment is dismantled. The label exploded
view of the connection is drew.

x. The component is identified and the function of each compartment was written in
table 3

Components Functions
Step DownTransformer To reduce the supply voltage
Heating Element Element in an electrical device which converts
electricity into heat and used to seal the plastic
Pilot lamp Indicate that an electric circuit is energized
Silicon Rubber To prevent plastic from broken or shread
Microswitch Electrical switch which can be operated using a very
small movement. The switches use hyteresis so the
activation force is higher than the deactivation force.
Also the quick moving of the metal strip produces
the typical clicking sound
Power Supply Chord A cable that temporarily connects an appliance to
the mains electricity supply
Circuit Board Controls heating mechanism and switch release.
Regulator(Timer) Knob Adjusts Plastic Sealer time.

xi. Do a continuity and resistance tests to the heating element of the toaster by using a
multimeter and record the reading.

xii. The common problems of the plastic sealer is stated the possible causes is also stated.

Problems Possible Causes Solutions

xiii. Any defective component is replaced and the components back to normal is
reassembled.
xiv. The plastic sealer is tested.
QUESTION :

1) What are the effect of the line frequency (50Hz) to the operation of the plastic
sealer?
2) How does a megger ohmmeter help your to decide that the plastic sealer is safe
and in working condition?
3) How does a plastic sealer work?
4) How is preset temperature controlled in the plastic sealer?

ANSWER :

1) All electronic or electric component in Malaysia use frequency 50Hz/60Hz and 240V
supply which mean the component working very efficient with that frequency.

2) We use megger ohmmeter to get the insulation test result of the cable plug if the
reading of megger ohmmeter is more than 1M its means that the plastic sealer is
safe to use if less that 1M the plastic sealer is not safe to use

3) Impulse heat sealers- have heating elements (one or two) of Nichrome placed between
a resilient synthetic rubber and a release surface of film or fabric. The heating
elements are not continuously heated; heat is generated only when current flows.
When the materials are placed in the heat sealer, they are held in place by pressure. An
electric current heats the heating element for a specified time to create the required
temperature. the Jaws hold the material in place after the heat is stopped, sometimes
with cooling water: this allows the material to fuse before stress can be applied.

4) When the temperature increases, the resistance also will increase. If temperature
controlled is set at highest level which is level 6,the resistance will be high. Therefore,
the causes is the plastic may be burned. But if it set at medium level (3), the resistance
will reduce and the plastic will be sealed perfectly.
CONCLUSIONS :

At the end of the lab, we have known the operation and control panel of plastic
sealer then we can state the function of each control of the plastic sealer. Next, we known
how to open and exposed each components in the plastic sealer. Every component in the
plastic sealer is labelled. We also can state the function of each component of the plastic
sealer. On the other hand, we also known how to sketch and label pictorial view of the plastic
sealer. Lastly, we can drew block and schematic diagram of plastic sealer.
