Organic Chemistry

1. Bonding
a. P Orbitals
i. Two lobes of p orbitals have oppositely charged signs (anti symmetric)
b. S Orbitals
i. Only positive orbitals (symmetric)
c. H-H (H2) has two molecular bonding orbitals
d. ^2 is the probability of finding an electron in space; when the equation equals zero
there is a node
e. Combination of Orbitals
i. Symmetrical combination- Two orbitals of the same sign combine; results in a
sigma bonding orbital
ii. Antisymmetrical combination- Two orbitals of different signs combine; results in
a sigma antibonding orbital and the creation of a node
iii.
