Bauxite residue re-use potential : Dream or reality?

Abstract
The key points are marketing and costs, not technical. From past experience and lessons
learnt some success and failures will be described. Using bauxite residues means that there
are customers for this material. And there is obviously competition with other materials.
From past experience some key points are highlighted. Transportation cost has to be
considered and customers need to be close. It can be an issue with remote refineries. It's
important to pay attention to long term liabilities and to target customers with an economical
interest (replacing their own product by bauxite residue). An European refinery had some
successful sales. A commercial name was given to the residue and technical and safety
sheets were provided. The refinery is a small one (600kt/y) with few residue production due
to Bok bauxite and double digestion process. It's around 0.6 t/t alumina. It is also located in
an urban area. In this case it is easier to reuse a significant part of the material. Some
examples are listed below:
Covering refuse disposal dumps
Immersed artificial reefs
Road embankments
Cavity filling - injection filling
Building materials
The final result should not produce more or worse waste or hazard than before treating. The
first goal is to improve the global environment. We must be sure that the result is a good
answer to the final user problem both in terms of quality and cost. The actual economical
interest of the customer is essential. We must control the final use of the product because
producer liability and image will always remain associated to the product. No product
proliferation policy without strict control.
