Pastors Corner
Every summer, I write a column that basically says, "Get out there and enjoy nature while
there's still time this summer." "See God's creation in all of its glory." "Take time to
appreciate God's amazing creation and praise Him for it!" This is that column. It's hard to
believe it's August already, and school is on the horizon, whether for our high school
graduates transitioning to college or for our preschoolers getting ready for kindergarten, or
anyone else in between. I pray that our students and our parents and grandparents --
everyone -- gets a chance to get out in nature.
Later this month, Karen and I will be heading to Colorado and then to Wyoming for our
largest block of vacation time. We go to Colorado every year, as that's where our youngest daughter, Kristin,
lives. However, we haven't been to Wyoming in twenty years, and I've never see Yellowstone or Grand Teton
National Parks. We will see them soon, and I can't wait! There is another reason we're going to Northwest
Wyoming: the total eclipse of the sun on August 21. On that day at 11:36 am in Grand Teton National Park, the
disk of the sun will slide behind the disk of the moon overhead and it will suddenly get cold, the birds will stop
their singing, and the sky will become so dark the stars will come out. Two minutes and twenty seconds later,
the sun will appear to move out from behind the moon and the sky will light up once again as if nothing
happened.
I've always been interested in both meteorology (not the study of meteors, but the weather) and astronomy.
One is the study of everything within our atmosphere; the other, everything beyond it. I'm always in awe of the
things I discover about both scientific disciplines. Did you know that the diameter of the sun is 400 times that of
our moon and that the moon is 400 times closer to us than the sun? That means the relative size of the moon
therefore perfectly matches that of the sun, allowing for total eclipses of the sun (which happen roughly every

18 months somewhere in the world, but rarely here), and for scientists to
be able to study the sun's corona, which is its atmosphere. The corona is
only visible on earth during total solar eclipses.
All of this reminds me that there is an "intelligent designer" behind all of
creation. It still boggles my mind that people can look at all of this
amazing creation and believe it just happened randomly from a big bang
14 billion years ago. Is it random that the relative size of our moon just
happens to be that of the sun around which we revolve, or that we just
happen to be at the perfect distance from a star to be able to live and
breathe and have our being? I think not, and I believe not. Praise God for
His amazing creation; now get out there and enjoy it!

The Oberholtzer
Scholarship fund has
recently encouraged a
young man who is
entering the process of
ministry by rewarding
him with $1000.00 gift
for his education. This
young man has
completed the

from our congregation as well as all the
pertinent school information that is
required. As everyone knows, tuition for
continuing education is costly. We were
so happy to help with this gift.
Our church has been so blessed and
gifted with many in our congregation who
have gone onto the pastoral ministry and
service ministry in so many various ways
spreading Gods message to others. The
scholarship fund originated shortly after
Pastor Bob Oberholtzer passed away.
This fund has helped many of our
congregation pursue their education and
ongoing ministry.
