Math 54
Work

Denition
In Physics, work characterizes the energy of motion of a body that
is moved when acted upon by a constant force. That is,

Work = Force x Distance

If force is not constant, then
b
Work = F (x)dx
a

Work

Example
1) A spring has a natural length of 20 cm. A 40 N force is required
to stretch (and hold the spring) to alength of 30 cm. How much
work is done in stretching the spring from 35 cm to 38 cm.

2) A cable weighs 2 lbs/ft attached to a bucket lled with coal
that weighs 800 lbs . The bucket is initially at the bottom of a
500-ft mine shaft.

2) A cable weighs 2 lbs/ft attached to a bucket lled with coal
that weighs 800 lbs . The bucket is initially at the bottom of a
500-ft mine shaft.

Determine the amount of work required to lift the bucket to

the midpoint of the shaft.

3) A 20ft cable weighs 80 lbs and hangs from the ceiling of a
building without touching the oor. Determine the work that must
be done to lift the bottom end of the chain all the way up until it
touches the ceiling.

4) A tank in the shape of an inverted cone has a height of 15
meters, a base radius of 4 meters and is lled with water to a depth
of 12 meters. determine the amount of work needed to pump all of
the water to the top of the tank. Assume the density of water is
1000 kg /m3 .

Example
5) As a water tank is being raised, water spills out at a constant
rate of 2 ft 3 per foot of rise. If the weight of the tank is 200 lb and
it originally contains 1000 ft 3 of water, nd the work done in
raising the tank 20 ft .
