THE HARTLEY FAMILY BLUEGRASS BAND IN ATHOL

The Hartley Family began performing bluegrass and gospel music
in 2004, first at local churches, festivals, and community events
in their home region of Arkansas. By 2007 they were sharing
their songs, as their Facebook page says, to honor God, bring
joy to people, and encourage others. Tom (banjo/guitar/vocals),
Deb (bass/vocals), Abby (vocals/guitar/mandolin/fiddle) and
Micah (banjo/fiddle/mandolin/vocals) bring proficient
instrumentation and well-blended harmonies to traditional
bluegrass and gospel tunes. the venue is Thurman free
Concerts in the Park in Athol on Monday, August 14, 7-9 p.m.,
with traditional bluegrass and gospel melodies played by The
Hartley Family Band. The concert is held rain or shine under
cover at Veterans Memorial Field at 311 Athol Rd., Athol.

A NEW COUNTRY/BLUEGRASS JAM

Hope in the Valley will take place on Satur-
day, Aug. 12 at the Argyle United Methodist
Church, 12 Sheridan St., Argyle, N.Y. The event,
which runs from 3 to 6 p.m., will benefit the
Haynes House of Hope in Granville, N.Y. A core
group of musicians, including several from the
Adirondack Fiddlers, will form the basis of the
jam, playing instruments including banjo, guitar,
mandolin and fiddle. Area musicians are invited
to bring their instruments and play with the group.
More information is available by calling Jani at
518-638-8026. Music lovers are encouraged to
attend and enjoy an afternoon of great music and
fellowship. Food will be available for purchase.
The event will be held rain or shine under a large
tent in the church parking lot by the gazebo. Ad-
mission is by free-will donation to Haynes House.
The Haynes House of Hope is a comfort care home
for the terminally ill. It provides at no cost, care
for the resident and their family in a home-like
setting. Since opening its doors in 2010, the house
has served more than 50 residents. As a non-profit
501(c)3 organization, it relies on donations, grants,
fundraising events and volunteers to continue its
mission.

GRADE 7 ORIENTATION AT SALEM JR./SR. HIGH
SCHOOL: In order to help incoming 7th graders and any new
students in the district get ready for the first day of school, Salem
Jr./Sr. High School will be holding its annual Visitation Day on
Wednesday, August 30, from 1:00 PM 3:00 PM. This is the
day for 7th graders to meet their teachers, learn about their sched-
ule, learn about some procedures that may be new to them, prac-
tice opening their locker, and visit with classmates. High school
students who are new to Salem are also invited to come in on this
day. We are asking that the 7th graders arrive promptly at 1:00
PM and meet in the auditorium. 7th graders may come in with a
parent/guardian or with a friend. They will stay for introductions
and then attend talks with their teachers where they will get their
passbooks, and ask questions about policies and procedures that
may be new to them. Following this they will have a chance to
practice opening their locker, follow their schedule and wrap it
all up with some ice cream and time to visit with their class-
mates. All 7th graders will be ready to leave by 3:00 PM. New
students in grades 8 12 may arrive anytime between 1:00 and
3:00 PM and stay for as long or as little as they would like. All
students are asked to bring their schedule.

The Tax System Explained in Beer
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill
for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we
pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
- The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
- The fifth would pay $1.
- The sixth would pay $3.
- The seventh would pay $7.
- The eighth would pay $12.
- The ninth would pay $18.
- The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, thats what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite
happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw
them a curve ball. Since you are all such good customers,
he said, Im going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by
$20". Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our
taxes, so the first four men were unaffected. They would still
drink for free. But what about the other six men? How could
they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his
fair share?
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everybodys share, then the fifth man
and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his
beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce
each mans bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to
follow the principle of the tax system, and he proceeded to
work out the amounts he suggested that each should pay.
And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing
(100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 ... (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7... (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 ... (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 ... (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 ... (16% saving).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the
men began to compare their savings.
I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving, declared the sixth
man. He pointed to the tenth man, But he got $10!
Yeah, thats right, exclaimed the fifth man. I only saved a
dollar too. Its unfair that he received ten times more benefit
than me!
Thats true! shouted the seventh man. Why should he get
$10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the
breaks!
Wait a minute, yelled the first four men in unison, We
didnt get anything at all. This new system exploits the
poor!
The nine men surrounded the tenth man and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didnt show up for drinks, so
the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But
when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered
something important. They didnt have enough money
between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and government
officials, is how our tax system works. The people who
already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most
benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they
just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start
drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat
friendlier.
CARDBOARD BOAT RACE scheduled for August 12, in
Schuylerville sponsored by Hudson Crossing Park (rain date is
Sunday, August 13, 2017) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route
29 in Schuylerville from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This years theme is
The Erie Canal, We Dig It! to celebrate the bicentennial of the
Erie Canal that was started on July 4, 1817. The first cardboard
boat race launches at 1 p.m. and best photo opportunities are
between noon and 2 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. On-
site registration and cardboard boat construction is open from 8
to 11 a.m. Rules, registration forms and hints to get started with
boat building are available at http://www.hudsoncrossingpark.org
.Race participants will construct a human-powered boat made
of corrugated cardboard or 100 percent recycled materials, which
will hold at least one crew member and be seaworthy enough
to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct
their boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event (materials
will be available at the event site for a nominal fee).
During race preparations, there will be food, live music and lots
of creativity. Environmental education activities and canal trivia.
Individuals, families, groups, businesses and school teams are

FISHING TOURNAMENT: L.L.I.A.s 21st annual childrens
fishing tournament will take place on Sunday, August 13th at
the Washington County Park Pavilion on beautiful Lake Lauder-
dale. The tournament is free and open to all young anglers age 15
and under and is strictly catch and release only.
The tournament runs from 8:00-10:30 a.m. and concludes with a
free hot dog lunch for all participants. As always, there will be no
fee charged to children entering the contest.
Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and all young anglers are required
to stop at the pavilion prior to getting their fishing lines wet. There
will be several different age groups and L.L.I.A. is working hard
to insure that all participants receive a small prize. All young an-
glers are required to have a parent or legal guardian on hand with

18TH CENTURY ARTISANS TO GATHER AT SCHUYLER
HOUSE Over 25 colonial artisans will ply their crafts on the
spacious grounds of the Philip Schuyler House on Sunday, Au-
gust 13, from noon to 5 p.m. at the 39th annual 18th Century Day
celebration. The Schuyler House, on Route 4 in Schuylerville,
was built quickly in November 1777 by Philip Schuyler to re-
place his lavish home which was burned by General John
Burgoyne as he retreated north following his defeat at the Battles
of Saratoga in October 1777. Renowned tinsmith Walter Fleming
of Ballston Lake uses tin snips, anvil and mallet to create sconces,
lanterns, candlesticks and other household items. New this year
is Billy McMillan of Glenmont who will demonstrate surveying
methods used to define property boundaries. The Old Saratoga
Historical Association and the National Park Service sponsor this

SILENT AUCTION ITEMS SOUGHT FOR FUNDRAISER-
On August 26, 2017 Cornell Cooperative Extension will be hold-
ing its 8th Annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction at Cronins
Golf Resort in Warrensburg, NY. All proceeds from this benefit
will be used to help financially support Cornell Cooperative
Extensions educational programs. We are asking for your sup-
port in the form of merchandise donation or gift certificate that
will be used as either a door prize for the golf tournament or for
an item in our silent auction. Cornell Cooperative Extension is a
key outreach system of Cornell University with a strong public
mission and an extensive local presence that is responsive to the
