Nola Delvita (2017): Improving Skills Creation of Waste Newspaper through Drill
Method for Relative Mentally Retarded Children Class X (Class
Action Research in SLB YPAC West Sumatra Padang) Special

This research based on the problems found in the relative mentally retarded children
class X in SLB YPAC West Sumatra in skill creation of waste newspaper since the teacher
cannot guide the children well in learning the skills creations of waste newspapers, so that the
children do not achieve the lesson fully. The purpose of this research were: 1) to describe the
learning process in improving the skills of making the candy place from waste newspapers
through drill methods, and 2) to prove whether the drill method can improve the skills to
make a candy place of waste newspapers to relative mentally retarded children class X in
SLB YPAC West Sumatra Padang.

Type of the research is Classroom Action Research (CAR), it is conducted in the form
of collaboration with classroom teachers. Subjects of research are two children, Relative
Mentally Retarded Children class X of C. The data is collecting through observation and
tests. After that it is analyzed in qualitative and quantitative.

The results showed that 1) the learning process of making a candy place from waste
newspapers using drill method is done in two cycles. Cycle 1 with six sessions. Each cycle
begins with planning, implementation (initial, core and final activities), observation, analysis
and reflection. 2) There is an increasing result of learning by using drill method in making a
candy place from waste newspapers. It can be seen from the data before the measuring of
childrens ability of doing the 22 steps of making the candy place from waste newspapers: H
(39%), and N (34%). While at the end of the first cycle Hs capability increased (61%), and N
(62%). In the second cycle capability of H increased to (95%), and N (93%). It can be
inferred that the implementation of learning by using the drill method can improve the skills
to make a candy place of waste newspapers on Relative Mentally Retarded Children in class
X in SLB YPAC West Sumatra. Therefore, it is recommended to the teachers skills to be
able to use the drill methods in learning other skills.
