A. 1 Review on techniques of characterization
How do writers characterize the characters in their stories?
The following are lines taken from the story Indarapatra and Sulayman. Identify the
techniques used by the writer.
1. Sulayman listened to the story and as he heard it, was moved with pity.
I will go, zeal and enthusiasm adding to his strength, and the land shall be avenged,
said he.
2. Then, although he was very sad, he was filled with a desire for revenge. Putting on
his sword and belt, he started for Mindanao in search for his brother.

3. With a loud yell, Tarabusaw leaped forth. For a moment they looked at each other,
neither showing any sign of fear. Then Tarabusaw used all his powers to try to devour
Sulayman who fought back. For a long time, the battle continued, until at last, the
monster fell exhausted to the ground and Sulayman killed him with his sword.
1. Juan left his wife and hurried to the darkest mountain to challenge the tattooed
Ilongots in combat
2. Mad with desire for revenge, Lam-ang challenged the fierce Ilongots to a fight.

C. Aquino.
2. Rice and fish is a staple food of most of the Filipinos.
3. My sister and my best friend know me better than anyone.
D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1
Rule: When subjects are joined by and, they are counted as more than one subject; thus,
the plural verb form should be used.

My mother and my best know me better than anyone.

However, when parts of the subject refer to only one person or thing, it takes a singular
verb.
My mother and best friend knows me better than anyone. (My mother and best friend
refers to only one person; therefore, the verb should be singular.)
Spaghetti and meatballs is Marcos favorite dish. (Spaghetti and meatballs is considered
as one meal; therefore, the verb should be singular.)

Practice 1. Circle the subject of each sentence and then underline the verb that agrees with it.
1. Puto and dinuguan (is, are) my favorite merienda.
2. Coffee and tea (is, are) served in the morning of the wedding reception.

9. Disease and death (hound, hounds) the Angeles family.
10. Mr. Angeles thoughts and actions (show, shows) us that he still has not moved on from
the death of his children.
E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #2
For compound subjects joined by or, nor, either or, neither nor, and not only but
also, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to it.
Examples:
Not only Molly and her mother, but also Blackie, their dog is very angry when Paulo
comes to their house. (The verb is agrees with the nearer subject Blackie.)
Not only the mother, but also the children disagree with the fathers decision to work
abroad.
Either Ms. Mercado or the students use the classroom computer on a regular basis. (The
verb use agrees with the nearer subject students.)
