Assignment

Q1. What do you mean by good conditions of Audibility?

Ans. For good condition of Audibility following condition must be fulfilled:
1. One must be able to hear the sound distinctly, indicating the primary
factor as the RT value
The sound should be heard within the RT value assigned for the activity
For eg. ACTIVITY RT value
Speech (Intense 0.6
Discussion)
Lecture 0.8
0.16 V
=

Reverberation Time (RT) - It is defined as the time sufficient for a sound
note to decay by 60dB.
2. There must be no Destructive Interference in the direct and reflected sound
notes, directing us towards the Distance or the Sound Path difference
between the two sound notes.
#Sound Path difference Distance between the incident path and the
reflected path
a) > 7m No destructive interference
b) upto 11m It is good for speech .No destructive interference
c) 11m-15m marginally heard
d) 15m-20m unsatisfactory
e) more than 20m sound will get echoed
Q2. Differentiate between the Free Field and Reverberant Field.
Ans.
Free Field Reverberant Field
1 Any area in which no reflection
is going to take place is known
as the free field
2 =1 0<<1

Q3. What is the significance of Ray Diagram to determine the good quality
conditions in a given space?
Ans. It gives an idea of volume in plan form as well as the Section
Q4. What do you mean by Sound Propagation and how to control it in indoors?
Ans. The phenomenon by which sound energy travels in space from one point to
the other, using a material medium to travel in form of compression and
rarefaction.
Sound energy transmitted across a barrier/surface
Reflection
Deflection
Q5. What is the function of absorptive surface in an enclosure?
Ans.
Q6. Suggest the list of absorptive materials you come across in building?
Ans.
Q7. Define Echo, Flutter Echo and Creep Echo.
Echo -
Flutter Echo - Series of multiple reflections
Creep Echo - Sound is reflected along the periphery of the surface and is heard
after a lapse of time

Ans.
Q8. Estimate the conditions of audibility in classroom measuring 50 sq.m. ,
75 sq.m. , 100 sq.m.
