Aim/Objective of the Course:


Management and Entrepreneurship is taught as one of the core subject for Mechanical
engineering programme. In this programme, topics on Planning, Organizing & Staffing,
Directing & Controlling, Small scale Industries, Institutional support and its functions are
dealt in detail. The programme intends to provide strong foundation on these topics to all
branches of engineering students. The delivery of topics will be made through lecture classes,
and demonstrations. The evaluation will be carried out through class tests and main
examination.
Course Learning Outcomes:
After completing the course, the students will be able to,
1. Explain the concept of Management, planning & staffing approaches
2. Explain briefly concept of organization, direction & supervision & managerial
control.
3. Explain the approaches Coordination, Social responsibility & leadership concepts.
4. Explain the various concept of Entrepreneurship, MSME & Business plan.
5. Explain the concept of Project Management & institutional supporting business
enterprises.

Detailed Syllabus:
Unit 1:
Management: Introduction - Meaning - nature and characteristics of Management,

Scope and Functional areas of management - Management as a science, art of
profession - Management & Administration - Roles of Management, Levels of
Management, Development of Management Thought - early management
approaches Modern management approaches.
Planning: Nature of Planning, Importance of Planning, Types of plans, Steps in
Planning.
Staffing: Importance and Need for Proper Staffing, Manpower Planning,
Recruitment, Selection.
Learning Outcome:
After completing the chapter the student will be able to:
1. Describe the roles and responsibilities at different levels of management
2. Comprehend early management and modern management approaches
3. Explain various types of planning.
4. Explain briefly the process or steps in planning.
5. Describe the recruitment & selection process.
Unit 2
Organisation: Introduction, Process of Organising, Principles of Organising, Span
of Management, Departmentalisation, Process Departmentalisation, Purpose
Departmentalisation, Organisation Structure. Direction and Supervision:
Requirements of Effective Direction, Giving Orders, Motivation, Job Satisfaction,
Organisational Commitment.
Managerial Control: Steps in Control Process, Need for Control System, Benefits
of Control, Essentials of Effective Control System.

Responsibilities of Business towards Different Groups, Social Performance of

Leadership: Difference between a Leader and Manager, Characteristics of

and Medium Enterprises Development Act 2006, Government Policy Initiatives
since 1948, Growth and Development of MSME in India, Current Schemes for
MSME, Problems Facing the MSME Sector, Role of Clusters in Promoting
MSME. Identification of business opportunities: Introduction, Mobility of
