1.1 Introduction
The ECDIS has been designed to meet ECDIS Type Approval standard IEC 61174 including
RCDS requirements of the Chapter 7. This ECDIS includes a lot of functionality which goes
over the minimum ECDIS performance requirements of IMO as specified in IEC 61174.
FIG. 1.1. General layout of ECDIS. System composition including all optional units.
1.3.1 General
ECDIS processor consists of an electronics cabinet, control keyboard and interface adapters.
Connection to the control keyboard is made with serial communication line. Connection to
interface adapters are from special ports.
One single ECDIS processor can be used for both route planning and route monitoring. There
can be an additional identical ECDIS processor, which is used for route planning, to fulfil
backup arrangements for replacing of the paper charts. These two ECDIS processors are
connected together with Local Area Network of ETHERNET type.
The unit is completely self powered from the 24 VDC supply.
Equipment category of the ECDIS according IEC 60945 is "protected from the weather".

Below is an example with generic ARPA radar using only IMO standard message
Below is an example of DGPS receiver with talker identifier GP defined for both GGA and VTG
messages
Below is an example of GPS receiver with ignored talker identifiers for both GLL and VTG
messages
NOTES:
talker identifier can be separately defined for speed and course (VTG-message) and for
position (GLL, GGA or PAT message). If talker identifier is defined as XX, then it is ignored.
IEC 61162-1 GGA uses messages VTG and GGA. Recommended for DGPS. Correct
operation of a DGPS sensor requires that the system receives also VTG message. If no
VTG message is received then the system thinks that there is something wrong in the DGPS
and the system downgrades the DGPS as a ordinary GPS-sensor
IEC 61162-1 PAT uses messages VTG, PAT and SHR,POS. Alternative for a DGPS which
gives also pitch and roll data.
IEC 61162-1 GLL uses messages VTG and GLL. Recommended for non differential
position receivers.
Use of differential signal with GPS can be detected with GGA and SHR,POS. A device
using identification GLL and device type 8 (= DGPS) will always be detected as differential
regardless of receiver status.
Cmg delay is delay between own ship turning and course made good in the VTG-message
to detect turning. Typically values are from 0 to 15 seconds.
Because no message has any datum indication, the user is responsible for used reference
system in position receiver. GGA message is supposed to be always in WGS-84, but
unfortunately some manufacturer does not follow standards.
Only one of connected sensors is allowed to send ZDA message, which will be used to
adjust the system clock, if time difference is larger than 5 seconds and if the system is not a
part of steering (ie. mode is not Goto Wp, Goto Track or Program Track Turn) and if the
system has Kalman filter in OFF position.
Offset from antenna position to Conning position is essential for speed, course, drift and
predictor related calculation.
Roll&pitch receive enable is used only with PAT.
First two channels could operate also as general purpose outputs. Checksum related
parameters are for outputs only. Sent messages are GLL, VTG and HDT. NOTE. Output
operation requires a SIF module instead of RIF module in A-Adapter.

Radar Overlay has status inputs which are used to select between 3 different setup for
parameters. This arrangement allow installation of three different radar transceivers and
antennas. Fox example a normal set of one S and one X-band radar in the mast and then a
third radar in bow. See examples above.
Each radar can have an antenna with different amount of pulses per revolution. Also
operational area of FTC (Rain clutter), STC (Sea clutter) and gain is separately defined for each
radar. Offset defined here are also used indirectly by the ARPA radar display. See separate
chapter.

3.1 Introduction
Selftest has two functions. One is to check to check functionality of ECDIS processor, if user
has doubts about failure of hardware. Another is to perform Color Calibration related functions.
One common colour calibration related function is check of grey scale (see chapter 3.3.2).
Before starting Selftest shut down and restart the computer in order to get the latest information
of CPU and Memory, Drives and Network. The Selftest is partly using the event log of
Operating System Windows NT where information of CPU, memory, drives and network was
recorded when Windows NT was started.
The following parts of ECDIS hardware can be tested:
CPU and Memory
Display
Hard disk, CD-ROM and Floppy Drives
Network
Control Panel
Analog interfaces
Alarm interfaces
Note, during Selftest the ECDIS is unable to do any navigation related things and as an
indication the System Failure is activated in the Control Panel.
To start Selftest, proceed as followed:
1. Press INITIAL SETTING button and select Selftest from the menu.
2. Confirm starting Selftest, press OK.
Start S52 Color Verification and Show S52 Color Verification are
intended for instrumental verification of Color Calibration with
MINOLTA CA-100 CRT color analyser.
Red Area, Green Area and Blue Area are intended both for check
monitor color performance and for Initial Factory Color
Calibration.
Use Cross, Rectangle, Vertical Lines, Horizontal Lines and Circle to check monitor geometry.
Use Red Area, Green Area and Blue Area to check monitor color performance.
This test is used to view analog voltage inputs A1IN - A8IN and status inputs STI1 - STI16 of B-
Adapter.
This test is used to view status of Alarm outputs STO1 - STO8 of B-Adapter.
This test is used to view information of available Hard disk, CD-ROM and Floppy drives.
If more than one hard drives installed, select another drive in Hard drive(s) list box.
If more than one floppy drives installed, select another drive in Floppy drive(s) list box.

5.1 Introduction
As ECDIS is very flexible for system composition, it is impossible to make one general failure
mode analysis for all possible cases. Therefore here is analysed one system which represents
minimum compositions and one system which represents minimum compositions with track
pilot.
5.2.1.4 One of two position receivers fails while using together with Kalman-filter
5.2.1.5 All position receivers fails while using all together with Kalman filter
nothing happens because LAN interface is normally used for connection with separate
planning station, which is not part of minimum system. Also, if the system includes a
planning station, nothing happens, because LAN interface between the Navigation and the
Planning Station is only used with user activated Backup and Restore functions to move
chart, user chart, route, pilot data etc. information between the station
1. Total failure

B. Radar display channels fails
like Radar display fails
C. Dual axis log channels fails
like Speed log fails.
