fosse pi ferma e forte, e stabile e potente.
quattro porte: porta Fiorentina, porta Bolognese, Porta S. Maria
saracinesca, alta 7 braccia ( 4 metri circa).

abbassati e ridotti a privati giardini, nulla ritengono dellantica fierezza, mentre

The construction of the "new towns" of Firenzuola (along with that of Santa Barnaba, then Scarperia) was
decided by the Florentine Republic with a resolution of 1306 to expand on the Apennine, where for centuries
dominated the powerful family of Ubaldini (alpes ubaldinorum) and guaranteeing The safe passage to
Bologna and the Po Valley. It took 26 years to arrive on April 8, 1332 at eight in the morning, laying the first
stone of the future town with walls.
Giovanni Villani (Florence, 1276 - 1348)
New Chronicle - UNDECATED BOOK cap. CC
As the City of Florence ordered to make the land of Firenzuola over the Alps.
In the same year (1332 ndR), having the lords Ubaldini disengaged and wound together, each party
to race by sending to the City of Florence of wanting to return to the murder and to the lordship of the
Commune, calling for it, for the Florentines was accepted; But remembering that for many times they
had been reconciled in a similar way to the City of Florence, and then rubbing their mail and their
advantage, as can be found in the back, they provide for the Commune to make a big and strong
land beyond The yoke of the alpine on the Santerno river, so that the said Ubaldini could no longer
be rubbished, and the peasant farmers of Florence beyond the alpine were free and frank, who were
servants and faithful of the said Ubaldini; And called to make the land known as the six great people
of Florence with great bala round about. And being the ubiquitous in the palace of the people with
the priests a priori together in great contrast, as the name should be named the land, and whoever
gives a name and who else, the author of this work finding them among them, I said: "I I will tell you
a very beautiful and wondrous name, and that it confesses to the enterprise, but that this new earth
is in the heart of the mountain and in the power of the Ubaldini, and at the borders of Bologna and
Romagna; And she has no name in the city of Florence, and she is deprived of it, in times of war,
which can be done, she has been stolen and stolen; But if you give her the name I will tell you, the
City will be more jealous and more alert to the guard: why would I appoint her, when you liked
Firenzuola" To this name, all in agreement with some contrast, they were content to confirm, and to
increase and favor their state and power, the arm of the Commune and the half of that of the people
of Florence died as a sign and gonfalone; And ordained that the greater church of that land, named
after the name, be called Saint Florent; And let the inhabitants of the city X live forever, bringing all
the nearby people and villas around to live there, and forcing them from any ban on the Commune;
And you would market one day of semman. And it began to base the name of God on April 8 of that
year almost at 8 o'clock in the day, as it was for the horsemen, as the sign of the Lion was rising, so
that its edifice would be firmer and stronger and more stable powerful.
Firenzuola was born on the Plan dell'Arca, the vast shore of Santerno, just downstream of the spring. It had
633 arms of length and 342 in width, (370x200 mt.) With four doors: Porta Fiorentina, Porta Bolognese,
Porta S. Maria (towards Cornacchiaja, Porta S. Pietro (towards the Santerno valley). Arrange an arch with a
top of the 7-armrest (about 4 meters) high on the door windlass, the total height of the doors had to reach 26
arms (15 m), while the Walls had to have 16 towers 4 in the corners, and 11.70 m high.
In 1342, when the walls and doors were completed, the Republic reduced the commitment of the garrison,
and the Ubaldini took advantage of it and invaded, burned and destroyed everything.
The reconstruction began with slow and hard work, until 1351 when the Visconti, to which the Ubaldini allied,
conquered Bologna, took Visignano and Monte la Fine, Piancaldoli, Castiglioncello and in July went down to
Firenzuola, destroying it again and then looking for to succeed, to conquer Florence.
The power of the Florentine Republic increases and between 1358 and 1362 comes the possession of
numerous castles of the Ubaldini.
In 1361 there was the opening of the Giogo da Scarperia road, made to scrape the oldest one passing
through the possession of the Ubaldini for Castel Guerrino and Cornacchiaja.
Meanwhile Firenzuola was a citadel without walls and defenses and finally in 1371 the Republic decided to
proceed to reconstruction. In January 1373 the Vicar of the Alpe was appointed to be resident in the castle.
Officially the Firenzuola Commune was established and the Lord of the Ubaldines ruled the Mugello and the
Santerno Valley for six hundred years. In 1377 there were no Walls but there was the Rocca that served as
the residence of the Podest, which at that time was Michele di Lando (1343-1401). His figure of historical
protagonist emerges shortly after, in the context of the Ciompi revolt in Florence, in July 1378, when he was
elected a gonfaloniere of justice to represent the interests of the poor people
It is almost a century since it is only in October of 1470, with the advent of the power of Lorenzo the
Magnificent, which starts a new (and last) season of work to fortify Firenzuola and make it able to counter d
'Invasion from the North.
But the Florentines, after the war of Serezana, lived until 1492 that Lorenzo de 'Medici died in a very
great happiness: for Lorenzo, put the arms of Italy, which for the sake and authority were stopped,
turned The soul to do great self and his city, ...
And because in his more quiet and secured state he lived, and could his or her allies, apart from him,
fight or support, to Bologna, in the middle of the Alps, the Fiorenzuola castle affixed;
Niccol Machiavelli - Istorie Fiorentie, book VIII 1532
The work is shipped between 1472 and 1478 (conspiracy of the Pazzi with the killing of Giuliano, brother of
Lorenzo dei Medici), stopping or almost until 1488.
In 1494 the castle fortress and its guard body were named and the following year the Rocca was finished.
From May 1496 he oversees the work of Antonio da Sangallo the old man, who will give the Walls the final
configuration against fire.
The Walls were completed with 4 sharp corner bastions at the four corners, two dull salient knights who
interrupted the curtains, one of which incorporated the Rocca and the two polygonal doors.
At the end of the fifteenth century the "fire" artillery, with deadly iron balls, imposed radical innovations in
defensive systems. The bastion is born, of which Firenzuola's second fortification is one of the first
examples.
"... it is probably the first absolute example of a pre-established inhabited center that received a
whole system with regular pattern systematically bastionate through a formula that remained
conceptually unchanged, and rarely implemented with equally rigorous".
Carlo Perogalli- Rocche e forti Medicee, Rusconi Milano 1980
The creation of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore (1420-1437) by Filippo Brunelleschi marks the
birth of a new constructive system, which makes it possible to create domes, even of large diameter,
without having to use wood sticks to support them during The construction phase.
This technique is also used by Brunelleschi in buildings of lesser importance, such as the cupolas of
Santo Spirito and San Lorenzo and the dome of the Laurentian Sagrestia. With his death in 1446, it
seems that this technique has been little-practiced, or at least no works are known in the first years
after his death. Only towards the end of the century this technique is re-used intensively, first by
Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in 1497 in the Flying Room of the Firenzuola Walls, with a
hemispherical dome, and then by other members of the great Sangallo family.
