Moringa Oleifera (Malunggay) as a wound healing extract

Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) has been used as herbal medicine in many cultures for
hundreds of years, as it is known as a very nutritious plant where it is used to
combat malnutrition in third world countries, especially for infants and nursing
mothers. The pods of the plant are the most valued and widely used part of the
plant, for they contain essential amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients. These
may be eaten raw or may be prepared or cooked. When these pods are fried, they
may produce a clear, odorless and sweet oil frequently called as Ben Oil.
Malunggay leaves may be eaten as greens, in salads and as vegetable ingredients for
soups and other tropical viands. Its flowers are cooked and eaten either mixed with
other foods or fried in batter.

Moringa possesses antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and is effective against

the growth of disease-causing microbes. Scientific research has proven that moringa
extracts exert a wide spectrum of protective activity against food-borne
microorganisms such as Salmonella, Rhizopus species, E. Coli, Enterobacter
aerogenus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. This defensive
activity makes moringa extracts perfect for sanitation and preservation purposes.
Also, aqueous leaves extract of moringa oleifera possess significant wound healing
properties. Research studies have provided supporting evidence regarding the
healing effects of moringa in the treatment of wounds with respect to skin-breaking
strength, wound closure rate and reduction in the scar area.

Malunggay Antiinfectious: Antibacterial; Anti Fungal, .

In late 1940s, The Department of Biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science in

Bangalore (PLN Rao) have found that malunggay or Moringa Oleifera leaves contain
a compound pterygospermin that is known in medical science as having
antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti fungal properties. Malunggay has been found to
inhibit inflammation in a controlled scientific study conducted by Philippine DOST
Scientists (Amelia P. Guevara, Carolyn Vargas and Milagros Uy). When an aquous
seed extract of malunggay has been administered to a carrageenan induced
inflammation, its was noted that the aquous seed extract of the Malunggay (Moringa
Oleifera) inhibited the development of edema in ratpaw. The Malunggay is
traditionally used to prevent and treat inflammations associated with rheumatism,
arthritis and joint pains. Malunggay decoction for washing sores and wounds, Boil
malunggay roots and let it cool to tolerable warm temperature and use it to wash
wounds and sores. By gargling the Malunggay decoctionm, it may also be used to
wash mouth sores and sore throats.

Malunggay poultice. Grounded Malunggay seeds, leaves and bark may be applied
topically as poultice onto swollen flesh to relieve inflammation.

Comparative study on the antiseptic and healing properties of selected leaves juice
versus povidone iodine solution.
Bernardo, Gertrudes Q.

This research project composed of seven studies used the Completely Randomized
Design (CRD) experimentation. Each treatment per study had three replicates with
one rabbit assigned to each replicate. The treatment, volume used per wound
application, number of experimental rabbits and frequency of application were the
same in all the studies. The plant drugs (leaf juice, leaf ointment, leaf sap) contain
medicinal ingredients with better antiseptic and healing properties that enhances
significantly the duration of rabbit wounds healing in 4, 5, 6, and 7 days than
povidone-iodine solution in the different studies conducted. The plant drugs posses
medicinal ingredients that could reduce degree of redness on incised rabbit wounds
from "bloody red" to"pinkish". They contain medicinal ingredients comparable with
povidone-iodine solution in preventing the formation of inflammation or swelling on
incised rabbit wounds. Nine plant drugs contain better medicinal ingredients that
minimized the formation of liquid substances (pus) in the incised rabbit wounds,
while seven plant drugs differ significantly with povidone-iodine solution with
regards to the prevention of wound discharge. Based from the medicinal ingredients
and healing effects of the plant drugs on rabbit wounds, the following were drawn:
talikod, kuribetbet, malunggay, penga-penga and sunflower leaf juice were
recommended for faster wound healing; the plant drugs used in the study were
recommended for reducing wound inflamation or swelling and degree of redness on
wounds; likewise, talikod, penga-penga, kuribetbet, malunggay, camantigue,
makahiya and sunflower leaf juices and labtang sap were recommended for
preventing the formation of liquid substances in wounds; kitchen technology flyers
for the preparation of the herbal medicine for wounds were recommended for
dissemination to all barangay health centers in La Union.

Moringa (malunggay) contains lunasin, an antibiotic-like protection for the cells

which also has antifungal properties. Extracts of moringa oil from seeds and leaves
have been known for decades to address the following: immune system
detoxification; management of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar ; speeds
up healing of wounds.

When looking at extracts from moringa oleifera leaves (hot and cold water extract, a
juice, and an ethanolic extraction) it was noted that the juice had a small inhibitory
concentration (MIC) in the range of 229-458g/mL against a variety of bacteria; this
was slightly more effective than the ethanolic extract (458-916g/mL) and water
extracts (29.87-58.75mg/mL).

It can be used to create high activated carbons which are able to sequester and
remove cyanobacterial microcystin-LR quite effectively, and the seed extract also
appears to be capable of suppressing cyanobacterial growth as 20-160mg
of moringa oleifera extract per liter of water is able to suppress growth
of Microcystis aeruginosa and cause the colony count to decline.
