Investment in the future
Advantages
Simple, step-by-step expansion of plant capacity
Manageable risk
Introduction of new technology (e. g. HMI, Industrial
Ethernet, DSL, mobile wireless, etc.)
Scenario 3
Comprehensive modernization
Bottlenecks in the supply of spare parts, decreasing sup-
port, or required functional extensions can also force
extensive modernization of the old plant with a future-
oriented telecontrol systems together with SIMATIC con-
trol systems. Conversion is usually possible during opera-

supported and the investment in installation, hardware or
application engineering is secured.

Modular remote terminal units based on SIMATIC S7-1200 are ideal for applications with a low degree of automa-
tion. They are inexpensive and are characterized by their small and compact hardware design. The remote termi-
nal unit usually consists of a local SIMATIC S7-1200 controller and a communication module a communication
processor (CP). The communication processors have the same design as the SIMATIC S7-1200. They are plugged
directly into the controller and connected via the backplane. They enable cyclical and event-driven transmission
of measured values and setpoints, as well as alarms between the remote terminal unit and the control center.
The CPs not only make smooth data transfer possible, they also offer comprehensive diagnostic options for quick
and meaningful analysis of the station status.
