VACUUM CIRCUIT BREAKER TESTING

Testing Procedure
RATING OF VCB
In our company we are manufacturing two different rating of VCB.

1. 11kV 630A 25kA Vacuum Circuit breaker

2. 11kV 1250A 25kA Vacuum Circuit breaker

DIFFERETIATE BETWEEN 630A AND 1250A VCB

TESTING PROCEDURE
Test Bench Details

The scope test bench contains three variable power supply to operate

1. Spring charge motor (0-230V DC/AC)

2. Closing coil (0-230V DC/AC)
3. Opening coil (0-230V DC/AC)

The R, Y, B phase opening and closing can be tested by testing voltage 5V DC.

If Vacuum interrupter is closed then it shows high 5V DC

If Vacuum interrupter is opened then it shows Low 0V DC

The Vacuum interrupter travel can be measured by the Linear Variable Displacement Transducer. The
mechanism travel is 27mm.

Initialization of test panel

Before open the test panel we have to check the parallel communication between the computer and
breaker, sample clock generator by SFI card testing and three CPU memory bank get tested.

After the above test we have to open the auto scan then we have to give the user name and password

Then Initialize the autoscan by selecting the arrow

Page 1
VACUUM CIRCUIT BREAKER TESTING

Auto scan is opened then select Edit->Breaker info->Enter Breaker SL.No, Interrupter type and SL.No
and save it

Then we have to give breaker type by selecting Edit->Breaker type->Select breaker type

We have to give the supply voltage for spring charge motor, closing coil, opening coil and save it by giving
password.

Setting the Voltage.

1. By using variac we have to set the operating voltage of the closing coil, opening coil and spring
charge motor.
2. Switch on 230 V AC supply and Breaker control switch.

SETTING THE OVERALL TRAVEL.

Select Edit->System setting->select Current and travel

Set mechanism travel TY is 27mm and click Auto place Mechanism. TY shows the TOTAL TRAVEL in mm
for Closing. Same process is repeated for opening. If the same travel value is repeated for closing and
opening then save the travel.

CLOSE TIMING TEST.

In closing time Test procedure we can analyze the various closing parameter such as

1. Close travel
2. Close speed

This test can be done by selecting the electrical trigger. Then select the close timing at the rated and
select test.

The graph is generated. The time duration of the first closure of contact can be analyzed by the graph. To
analyze the graph select ANALY.

According to CGL WL-34599 vacuum interrupter technical data sheet.

1. The close contact travel should be 6-8mm.

2. The close velocity of vacuum interrupter should be 0.7 to 1.0 m/sec (closing speed checked for
average of last 30% contact gap).
3. The closing time duration should be 30-50ms.

OPENING TIMING TEST.

In opening time Test procedure we can analyze the various opening parameter such as

1. Open travel
2. Open speed

Page 2
VACUUM CIRCUIT BREAKER TESTING

This test can be done by selecting the electrical trigger. Then select the open timing at the rated and select
test.

The graph is generated. The time duration of the last opening of contact can be analyzed by the graph. To
analyze the graph select ANALY.

According to CGL WL-34599 vacuum interrupter technical data sheet.

1. The open contact travel should be 7-9mm.

2. The open velocity of vacuum interrupter should be 1.0 to 1.3 m/sec (opening speed checked for
average of 75% contact gap).
3. The opening time duration should be less than 25ms.

PARAMETER TO BE CHECKED DURING CLOSING ACCORDING TO INTERRUPTER DATASHEET.

1. Snatch gap is calculated as difference between the Contact travel & Total travel. It should be 3.5 to
4.5mm
2. Number of bounces should be 2 per phase
3. Contact bounce duration should be 2ms
4. The duration of contact mismatch should be less than or equal to 1msec

PARAMETER TO BE CHECKED DURING OPENING ACCORDING TO INTERRUPTER DATASHEET.

1. Over travel during opening should be less than 2 mm.
2. Maximum rebound during opening should be 1mm.

MECHANICAL OPERATION TEST.

Select Edit->system setting-> speed and delay-> select the number of mechanical operation
required.

Select Mechanical operation test. Then give test.

The mechanical operation test have to be done whenever the dashpot is adjusted or after all the above
parameter is achieved. After 50 Mechanical operation test the parameter should not get changed.

Then store the both close and open graph.

Page 3
VACUUM CIRCUIT BREAKER TESTING

MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM PERCENTAGE TEST.

1. 70% of control voltage of Tripping coil should be set in Variac. Then 5 opening operation should be

done.
2. 85% of control voltage of Tripping coil should be set in Variac. Then 5 closing operation should be

done.
3. 110% of control voltage of Tripping coil and closing coil should be set in Variac. Then 5 closing

operation should be done.

CONTACT RESISTANCE TEST.

After the arm contact and flower contact assembly. We should do the contact resistance test.

100 amp of Dc current is applied across the contact. To measure the xontact resistance of the
breaker.
Select current range enter and select 100A
Select resistor range enter and select 200
Inject the current. The contact resistance should be 30 for interrupter. With flower contact,
contact resistance should be 40

Financial Summary
Use this section to give a brief summary of your financials, highlighting important points.

This is also the perfect place for a few charts that demonstrate key financial information. To add a chart, on
the Insert tab, click Chart. The chart will automatically coordinate with the look of your report.

Need some help choosing a chart type? No problem.

To show values across categories, such as to compare the revenues of different business units, try a
column or bar chart.
To show values over time, such as for revenue or profit trends, try a line chart.
To compare two sets of related values, such as to compare executive salaries relative to number of
years with the company, try a scatter chart.

And when youre ready to customize the look of your chart, just click in the chart and then check out the
icons you see on the right for everything from style and layout to managing data.

Notes to Financial Statements

ACCOUNTS
When you have a document that shows a lot of numbers, its a good idea to have a little text that explains
the numbers. You can do that here.

DEBT
Of course, we would all prefer to just have profits. But if youve got any debt, this is the place to make notes
about it.

GOING CONCERN
Okay, you get the idea. If youve got notes to add about your financials, add them here.

CONTINGENT LIABILITIES
Keep in mind that some of these headings might not apply to your business (and you might have others to
add). This one, for example, is about potential liabilities that could arise if something happens in the future,
such as a pending legal decision.

TAKEAWAYS
What would you like your readers to understand? Add notes on key takeaways here.
