PRACTICUM WEEK: 3

DATE: 15TH FEBRUARY 2015 19TH FEBRUARY 2015

TITLE: AMOUNT of GUIDANCE DURING LEARNING

1. PROBLEM

In my third week of practicum, I discovered that guidance is an extremely

important element in all teaching. Of course, it is not just guidance during a
demonstration or during activity but it includes guidance on all aspects of learning
starting from how to write the date to but not limited to what should be done after they
finished. Even though I considered my pupils to be quite advanced learners, I
sometimes underestimated the amount of guidance that they needed during an activity.
For the past weeks, I have given them different and more challenging tasks than the
ones they were used to in the classroom. I admitted that though advanced, when it
came to new activity, they were still in need of lots of guidance. They were also in need
of a routine or pattern in order to be able to fully comprehend and master the task that I
gave them. The problem lies in my own perception of the amount of guidance that I
should give them during the lesson. At times I felt that too much guidance made things
too simple for them while lack of guidance caused them to be unable to do the task. Up
until now, I am still closely observing my pupils on their capacity to do the task with and
without my guidance. I still could not truly be sure of the amount of guidance or the level
of difficulty of the tasks that I should assigned to them.

2. Suggestions for improvement

I should try asking my mentor on the kind of activities that my pupils are
used to doing in the classroom. An in- depth discussion on how and what guidance is
given to my pupils during those activities would also be helpful. Aside from that,
discussing the level of difficulty of the tasks I would be giving to the pupils with my
mentor will prepare me for the amount of guidance as well as provide information on the
suitability of the tasks that I would give to my pupils.
3.Period of time

Within the week, I have been able to discuss the kind of activities that my pupils
are used to doing in their classroom. After a series of incident of giving my pupils a task
that were a bit too high for their level, I have also learnt a bit on how to assess whether
or not my pupils would be in need of more guidance in doing the prepared tasks. Aside
from that, with the information I have gained from my mentor, I have applied the
knowledge into my instruction in the classroom for better guidance.

4.Evaluation on successfulness

I would ask my supervisor and my lecturer to give their comments and advice to
improve myself.

5. Further action.

I need to closely observe my pupils to understand the amount of guidance that

they need. Since guidance is given to help pupils during the lesson, I need to always be
prepared of changing my instruction to meet pupils needs and concerns during lesson.
