ASSIGNMENT 1 SFT1023
th
(Please submit before/on 22 JUNE, 2017,THURSDAY)

1. Two objects have the same size and shape. Object A has an emissivity of 0.3, and object B has an
emissivity of 0.6. Each radiates the same power. Is the Kelvin temperature of A twice that of B?
Explain.

2. The amount of radiant power produced by the sun is approximately . Assuming the
sun to be a perfect blackbody sphere with a radius of , find its surface temperature (in
kelvin).

3. Two identical solid spheres have the same temperature. One of the spheres is cut into two
identical pieces. These two hemispheres are then separated. The intact sphere radiates an energy
Q during a given time interval. During the same interval, the two hemispheres radiate a total
energy QWhat is the ratio Q/Q?

4. A solid sphere has a temperature of 773 K. The sphere is melted down and recast into a cube that
has the same emissivity and emits the same radiant power as the sphere. What is the cubes
temperature?

5. The photons emitted by a source of light do not all have the same energy. Is the source
monochromatic? Explain.

6. Two sources produce electromagnetic waves. Source B produces a wavelength that is three times
the wavelength produced by source A. Each photon from source A has an energy of
. What is the energy of a photon from source B?

7. A laser produces 3.0 W of light at wavelength 600 nm. How many photons per second are
produced?

8. The maximum wavelength that an electromagnetic wave can have and still eject electrons from a
metal surface is 485 nm. What is the energy in electron volts?

9. Calculate the energy in electron volts of a photon having a wavelength (a) in the microwave
range, 5.00 cm, (b) in the visible light range, 500 nm, and (c) in the x-ray range, 5.00 nm.

10. Suppose a star with radius 8.50 x 108 m has a peak wavelength of 685 nm in the spectrum of its
emitted radiation. (a) Find the energy of a photon with this wavelength. (b) What is surface
temperature of the star? (c) At what rate is energy emitted from the star in the form of radiation?
Assume the star is a blackbody (e = 1). (d) Using the answer to part (a), estimate the rate at which
photons leave the surface of the star. ( Refer Chapter 27 Serways College Physics for more
information)
