Passage I
Nowadays, lots of people look for the words organically grown when they want to eat
healthy. But what if turns out those little labels dont actually mean what people think, and
that the foods they feel so good about eating arent that different from the store brand
except for the price tag at checkout?
Thats the question raised by researchers at Stanford University in a study published this
week, which found that the health benefits of organically grown produce, meats, eggs and
cheeses are negligible when compared to their non-organic counterparts. Not only were foods
labeled organic no more nutritious than other foods, which tend to be substantially less
expensive, they were just as likely as the store brand to be contaminated by bacteria like E.
coli and other dangerous germs.
Moreover, the nutritional content of most fruits and vegetables depended more on
ripeness, soil and climate than on how they were farmed. Organic produce generally had
higher levels of phosphorus and compounds known as phenols, which may help prevent some
cancers. But the differences were so tiny, researchers couldn't say for sure they conferred any
overall health benefit. Meanwhile, some non-organic strains of fruits and vegetables actually
had more vitamins and anti-oxidants than their pricier organic cousins.
(6)____________________________________ 25
Will any of this discourage people from pursuing healthier lifestyles by seeking out
organically grown foods? Not likely. The organic produce market was a $12.4 billion business
last year, and many people undoubtedly will see even minuscule differences in pesticide levels
and bacteria resistance as worth the extra cost. Eating foods that dont contain synthetic
pesticides, hormones or additives is a lifestyle choice as much as a strategy for dietary health.
Thats because even for those skeptical of the health advantages of organic foods and
farming methods, they have a generally positive impact on the environment. Organic farmers
not only avoid the intensive use of pesticides to protect their plants, they also employ
techniques like crop rotation and natural fertilizers that don't produce harmful agricultural
runoff to contaminate rivers and streams.
Organic farming has the potential to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that
contribute to climate change. For many people, a healthier planet is as good a reason as any
for eating organic, regardless of the health advantages such foods confer.
6. What can be inferred from the question raised by researchers at Stanford University?
1) Organic foods are not worth eating.
2) Labels on organic foods are untruthful.
3) The price of organic foods is too high.
4) Organic foods are quite different from non-organic counterparts.

7. What does the writer expect the reader to feel after reading paragraph 1?
1) Disappointed
2) Horrified
3) Helpless

8. Which is NOT the true statement about organic and non-organic foods?
1) Non-organic foods are as nutritious as organic ones.
2) Non-organic foods are generally cheaper than organic ones.
3) Health benefits of organic and non-organic foods are very slightly different.
4) Both organic and non-organic foods can be contaminated by bacteria and other
dangerous germs.

organic counterparts.

Passage 1
1 Africa isn't the kind of place you might expect to find penguins. But one
species lives along Africa's southern coast today, and newly found fossils confirm
that as many as four penguin species coexisted on the continent in the past. Exactly
why African penguin diversity plummeted to the one species that lives there today is
still a mystery, but changing sea levels may be to blame, the researchers say.
2 Only one penguin species lives in Africa today -- the black-footed penguin,
or Spheniscus demersus, also known as the jackass penguin for its loud donkey-like
braying call. Exactly when penguin diversity in Africa started to plummet, and why,
is still unclear.
3 Gaps in the fossil record make it difficult to determine whether the
extinctions were sudden or gradual. "[Because we have fossils from only two time
periods,] it's like seeing two frames of a movie," said co-author Daniel Ksepka. "We
have a frame at five million years ago, and a frame at 10-12 million years ago.
5 "There's only one species left today, and it's up to us to keep it safe," Thomas
said.
Passage 2
1 An estimated 50 percent of adults in the United States report that they consume
dietary supplements on a regular basis. Some of these supplements contain
caffeineeven if it is not listed on the label as an ingredient
2 In the United States, dietary supplements that contain a propriety blend of
herbs that may contain caffeine are not required to disclose the amount of caffeine,
only the identity of the herbs. If caffeine in its pure form is added to a product,
however, there is a requirement to add the word caffeine to the labels ingredient
listing.
3 Now, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Beltsville have analyzed
a number of caffeine - containing products. Dietary supplements--predominantly
weight - loss and sports - nutrition products listed containing complex mixtures of
botanicals on the label -- were chosen for analysis from multiple channels. The study
shows that approximately half of the tested products contained the caffeine equivalent
of up to two cups of coffee per day. Therefore, its important for consumers to check
the labels of supplements for caffeine-containing botanical ingredients.
Passage 3
1 Many of Chiles poor, northern coastal villages have suffered in recent years
from water shortages in spite of the abundance of cloud cover and fog in the region.
This absence of rainfall has imposed severe hardship on communities. They cannot
grow crops and must carefully ration their water, which has to be delivered by
truck.
2 Chilean researchers have produced a pilot project that could alleviate this
problem. Adopting conventional water system, they have redevised a centuries-old
method to capture the water droplets of the fog. In this method, triangular-weave
polypropylene nets are attached to wooden support posts on El Tofo mountain to
serve as water collectors. Each of these nets can collect approximately 40 gallons of
GAT 2 SIMULATION TEST 13
water each day. When the fog develops, droplets of water are trapped in the nets and
join to form larger drops that then fall into a trough. From the troughs, the water
drains through filters into underground tanks and then piped to a storage tank, where
it is chemically treated to kill disease-causing organisms. Finally, water flows to
individual households, just as in traditional water systems. This collection system
can supply the tiny, poor community with 2,500 gallons per day, enough for the
entire community to sustain their lives. "We went crazy when they opened the tap
for the first time," said Sergio Espejo.
3 The water is not only clean but far less expensive than water delivered to the
area. Moreover, it is collected at no apparent cost to the environment. It is likely that
this system could be successfully implemented in other areas around the world with
similar environmental conditions and economic constraints.
43. According to the passage, what is NOT true about fog collection?
1. Fog can be turned into drinking water.
2. The fog collection destroys the environment.
3. The concept of collecting water from fog isnt new.
