ABSTRACT
Introduction: Prostate carcinoma is the most common male carcinoma in the
United States. Prostate carcinoma is the second cause of death of men aged over 50
years, after lung carcinoma. Increasing age is the main risk factor for this disease.
Objective : to provide information on definitions, epidemiology, etiology,
pathogenesis, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy, complications, prognosis
and education of prostate carcinoma. Study of literature : Prostate carcinoma is a
malignant tumor that grows in the prostate gland in males. The specific cause of
prostate carcinoma is still not known with certainty. Factors that seem to increase
the risk of prostate carcinoma include age, race, diet, family history and smoking.
In early stadium, patient usually experience asymptomatic state. Possible symptoms
that can occur such as dysuria, urinary retention, and hematuria. Increased PSA
(Prostat Spesific Antigen) levels, rectal examination, transrectal ultrasound,
pathologic examination useful for diagnosis of prostate carcinoma. Several factors
such as life expectancy at diagnosis, tumor stage and grade, blood PSA value, co-
morbidity, and patient preference are important to make the treatment decision.
Radical prostatectomy or definitive radiotherapy is the first choice for localized
tumor whereas hormonal treatment should be given to patient with metastatic
disease.
