through Bostons twisting, traf-
fic-clogged streets may seem
more about self-preservation
than spiritual enlightenment.
For the Rev. Laura Everett, her
daily 6-mile commute is a way
of connecting to her adopted
city, its residents, and her sense
of community and vulnerability.
Instead of hopping on the sub-
way and popping up in another
part of town, Everett said, bicy-
cling has exposed her to the warp
and weft of Bostons neighbor-
hoods and the people who ani-
mate them.
Its also led her to a new sense
of spirituality and inspired her to
turn her experiences into a new
book, Holy Spokes: The Search
for Urban Spirituality on Two
Wheels.
Part of the regularity of a
daily commute is what I think
forms it to be a spiritual disci-
pline, said Everett, 38.
That commitment to the
same route time and time again,
starting to see the same people,
seeing the same neighborhoods,
seeing the trees change from
budding to bursting that is
where I started noticing this is
really having an effect not just
on how I move through the city,
but on my soul, she said.
Along the way, Everett, exec-
utive director of the Massachu-
setts Council of Churches, stum-
bled on an impromptu congrega-
tion a tribe of fellow bicyclists
who share the joys and terrors of

Marie Bartoletti was 57 and in
outstanding shape. By late 2015,
she had run 315 marathons and
25 ultra marathons. In one two-
year stretch, she ran a marathon
in every state plus Washington,
D.C. a feat that takes others
a lifetime to accomplish. She
qualified for Boston, then de-
cided it would be fun to run the
course in reverse before turning
around and running the official
marathon with the rest of the
field.
Her personal record was 3
hours, 40 minutes, but Marie
also liked to slow down and run
as an official marathon pacer
volunteers who hold up signs
showing how fast they will fin-
ish the course so less experi-
enced runners can follow their
lead. She loved pacing because
it allowed her to help first-time
marathoners reach the finish
line. She had paced every Pitts-
burgh Marathon since it returned
from a five-year hiatus in 2008.
And now she was in a hospital
bed, and she couldnt even say
her name.

Berks and Lebanon counties.
Under the split season format,
the five-day firearms season for
antlered deer will be Nov. 27-
Dec. 1. It will be followed by a
seven-day concurrent season for
antlered and antlerless of Dec.

her mind, she said. Running is
where she finds shelter.
So a few days after the stroke
when a nurse gave permission
for Marie to walk, she leaped
from that bed, nearly causing
the monitors connected to her
to tumble to the floor.
She stayed in Michigan for four
weeks with her cousin, Kathy, a
retired nurse. She began speech
therapy, struggling to relearn the
seemingly simple act of forming
words. The first word she worked
on was John, for the man who
would always be by her side.
But it was hard. Marie had run
distances beyond the reach of
