Assignment #1

- Diodes: are semiconductor devices formed by two doped regions separated by a pn junction. A diode has
two modes of operation: forward biased and reverse bias. In forward biased mode, the diode acts as a close
switch having a barrier potential of about 0.7V. In reverse biased mode, the diode acts as an open switch.
If the supplied voltage is less than 0.7 voltage, the diode is inactive.
- Some types of diode:
Zener diodes are used in reverse biased mode in which the voltage across the zener remains nearly
constant. Zener diodes are used in voltage regulation.
The Schottky diode has a metal-semiconductor junction. Schottky diodes are primarily used in
high-frequency and fast-switching applications.
The LED diode emits light when forward-biased. In contrast, when receiving light, the photodiode
exhibits a reverse current increasing accordingly with the light intensity.
The laser diode operates similarly to an LED except that it emits single wavelength light when
forward-biased.
The pin diode respectively has three regions: p region, intrinsic region and n region. The pin diode
acts like a capacitor when reverse-biased and acts like a variable resistor when forward-biased.

- The bipolar junction transistor (BJT) has three terminals which are called base, collector and emitter.
Significantly, in active mode, we obtain large current in the collector when giving a small current in the
base. BJTs can be used as a voltage amplifier or as a switch.
2 types of BJT: pnp transistor and npn transistor
Compare three modes of operation in BJT for npn transistor:

Cutoff IB=0 IC=0 VCE=VCC

Saturation IB>IC VCE0.2V
=

Linear IB=IC VCE=VCC - ICRC

- The junction field effect transistor (JFET) has three terminals called source(S), gate(G) and drain(D).
2 types of JFET: P-type and N-type.
Regarding N-type, JFET operates with a reverse-biased for VGS:
2

= (1 ) can only be applied when VGSVGS(off)
()

where VGS(off) is given by manufacture and is negative. JFET is in saturation when VGS=0 and in cutoff
when VGS=VGS(off).
Unlike BJTs, FETs are voltage device because FETs dont demand so much current.
For BJTs, if we increase the base current starting from 0, the mode of operation respectively goes
from cutoff to linear and finally to saturation. For FET, the mode of operation goes from saturation
to linear and then cutoff depended on VGS

- Some types of FET:

The MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor FET) has no pn junction but its gate is insulated from
the channel by SiO2 layer. There are E-MOSFET and D-MOSFET.
D-MOSFET operates with zero, positive or negative V GS while E-MOSFET can not operate with VGS=0.
MOSFETs are used for amplifier and swiching.
CMOS is made by combining pairs of p-type and n-type MOSFET for logic functions. CMOSs
are widely used in integrated circuits such as microprocessors, microcontrollers, RAM, etc.
