Thus our new goals for the coming year are 14 baptisms per week or 550 for the whole year. I
would ask all missionaries to pray daily for this new goal and to pray by name for those whose
names are on the list of fechas for this week in El Clarin. We will be able to reach this new
goal and exceed it if every single companionship understands and believes that they can
baptize every single month. The Lord has prepared many souls to hear the message of the
gospel and we need only to be led to them by the power of the Holy Ghost. Thus our
obedience levels and our capacity to work hard and work smart must be at a very high level.
We must live lives of personal purity to merit the constant presence of the Holy Ghost who is
central to all that we do in missionary work. We would do well to continue to focus on families
as we are doing in the month of August.
Some ask why we place so much emphasis on goal setting and numbers in the Mission. One
simple equation that tells the whole story for me is: NUMBERS = PEOPLE. We must never
forget when setting goals and making plans that this is all about our spirit brothers and sisters
and not some meaningless statistic. The numbers represent real people who live, breathe,
and go through their lives. Another reason for goal setting and the numbers is that they help
us focus on our missionary purpose. Without goals and without follow up of those goals, every
week would be the same, we would have no idea how we are doing and we would drift
aimlessly. It has been said that To a ship that has no destination, every wind blows fair.
President Thomas S. Monson has said, When performance is measured, performance
improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement
accelerates. Thus a prophet of God has stated that we should have goals and that those
goals should be measured for optimal results. Enough said.
Preach My Gospel states that goals reflect the desires of our hearts and our vision of what we
can accomplish. Through goals and plans, our hopes are transformed into action. Goal setting
and planning are acts of faith. Elder Russell Ballard reminds us that if we dont set goals, we
can reach a ripe old age and look back on our life only to see that we reached but a small part
of our full potential. A crucial part of this process is not just to set goals. Goals without a
specific plan to accomplish them are tantamount to wishes. Thus time needs to be spent
figuring out a specific plan by which the goals can be reached. PMG gives us 7 excellent
guidelines in our goal setting and planning: 1) Follow the Spirit, 2) Focus on the key indicators
and the standards of excellence for the Mission (pautas), 3) Focus on people and using specific
names, 4) Be specific and realistic and set goals that make you stretch, 5) Set weekly and
daily goals, 6) Set goals for personal and companion study, and 7) Measure your progress
each day, and each week. Missionaries must always remember that these goals and pautas
should not be engaged in primarily for personal recognition. They are also not to be used as
quotas that impose specific goals on you and your companion just for the sake of imposing
quotas.
PMG concludes by telling us that, Carefully considered goals will give you clear direction and
will help you fill your days with activities that help people strengthen their faith in the Savior and
progress toward baptism, confirmation and full activity in the Church. Challenging goals will
help you work effectively and lead you to stretch and grow. I have a powerful testimony of the
power and value of righteous goals and the plans to achieve them. I am convinced that we
focus better, work harder, strive more diligently and increase our performance when we have
inspired goals to work towards. May we all embrace this new mission goal and do all that we
can to achieve this new goal of 14 baptisms per week or 550 per year.
TRUTHFULNESS VS DECEPTION
"Truthfulness is earning future trust by accurately reporting past facts". (Achieving True Success)
"Honesty is to be completely truthful, upright, just and without deceit and integrity is having the
moral courage to make our actions consistent with our knowledge of right and wrong." (Young
Women Personal Progress Booklet 2009).
Elder Neil Anderson teaches that, "God our Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, are beings of
absolute, perfect, and complete honesty and truth". The Savior said, "I am the way, the truth and
the life" John 14:6 and in the Savior's own words he said, "I am the spirit of truth" D&C 93:26 and
then he also spoke, "I tell you the truth" John 16:7 The Savior is the perfect example of
truthfulness. In the D&C 18:21 we are admonished to "speak the truth in soberness." And in the
D&C 50:17 it says,"Those sent forth to preach the word of truth should preach by the spirit of
truth." As missionaries, we carry the truth to the world and we do it in a manner of soberness to
let the Spirit carry our words to the hearts of our investigators. As we testify of the truthfulness of
the gospel others are converted..
I often think of Joseph Smith and his courage when he spoke, "I knew it, and I knew that God
knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would
offend God, and come under condemnation." Joseph Smith History 1:25. Because of Joseph
Smith's honesty we have the Book of Mormon today, the Gospel is restored and we are
privileged to be a part of this latter day work of bringing souls to the Savior. As we share this
beautiful story with our investigators, and as we powerfully testify of the validity of the Book of
Mormon, we can help them also know of its truthfulness.
Elder Neil Anderson said, "Our challenges come in 'more or less'--the small temptations on the
edge of being completely honest." Daily we make decisions that show who we really are. It is
the small and simple things we do daily that will ultimately form our character. David O McKay
said, "The greatest battle of life is fought out within the silent chambers of the soul." President
Brigham Young said, "We must learn to be righteous in the dark." meaning we must learn to be
righteous and honest at all times when no one would ever know whether we were being honest
or not. We must never allow the pressures around us to crack our character of honesty. We must
be true to ourselves and do as the Savior himself would do.
In the Ten Commandments, the Lord declared, "Thou shalt not lie". In the D&C 78:10 we read,
"Otherwise Satan seeketh to turn their hearts away from the truth, that they become blinded
and understand not the things which are prepared for them." When we gather enough truth
and light then Satan's influence and power ends. He is cast out because he can no longer
deceive us as his primary tool is the lie. Honesty and truthfulness are at the very core of our
spiritual growth. Good relationships rest on a foundation of trust. Someone who lies, cheats or
steals loses the trust of others. Just one small lie undermines trust and shows disregard for the
relationship itself. No wonder that one of our articles of faith states, "We believe in being honest."
Over the past few years, I have been very impressed with the missionaries in our mission, as they
speak truths that help people learn. One of our missionaries recently shared this experience, "We
had ten minutes left and we decided to contact two women from Spain. We introduced
ourselves and one of the women said she did not like our religion. Her friend then said, "We are
Catholic." Hemana_______started bearing her testimony. She said she knew they are daughters
of God and that God loves them. The situation quickly changed and the women were nice and
complimented us." Isn't it interesting to note, that when these sister missionaries spoke truths in a
loving way the spirit was able to testify and these women were able to hear and feel the words
that were spoken and became receptive to listening. Another example of this shared by an
elder in our mission, "One day Elder _______ and I were talking with a man who was trying to
argue "why" the Catholic church was true. I was destroying him then my companion started to
testify, and shared a lot of things in a loving way. I learned that even though we have the real
true church, we are to be loving when we teach someone. "I know that as we speak the truth
with love others are more willing to listen to our message.
In May 2011, our dear prophet, President Monson admonished us, "May we be examples of
honesty and integrity wherever we go and whatever we do." It is my prayer, that as we continue
to live our lives as faithful missionaries, we will speak the truth and live our lives with honesty and
integrity.
