great food from the Harrop Hall volun-

have lunch and listen to local musicians
performing throughout the afternoon.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

The Lardeau Valley Community Centre is
actually in Meadow Creek, about 35 min-
utes drive north of Kaslo. Their valley
harvest festival is a great family event.
There will be races and games for the
kids, competitions for children and for
the whole family, and live music. Tradi-
tions celebrated at the fair include the
art and skills of the farmer and small
homesteader. There will be lots of ven-
dors, some displaying wares you wont
see anywhere else. Bring your pock-
etbook and shop early for Christmas!

Ric Careless to speak in Argenta
On Saturday, September 2, Ric Carelessa most highly
recognized BC conservationist and the driving force
behind establishing the Purcell Wilderness Conser-
vancywill wrap up the Canada-150 Earl Grey Trail Res-
toration Project with a presentation entitled, The History
of the Earl Grey Pass Trail Within the Purcell Wilderness
Conservancy. The author of To Save the Wild Earth, Ric
has been honoured with multiple awards over the years,
including the Order of British Columbia (1994). He is a
co-founder of the Sierra Club of BC, was executive direc-
tor of Tatshenshini Wild and chair of its International
Network representing 10 million members and, most
recently, became an inaugural director of the newly-
formed BC Parks Foundation.
Rics presentation will be at 7 pm in the Argenta Hall. It
is sponsored by the Lardeau Valley Historical Society and
is free of charge.
The Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Park, encom-
passing 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) is the largest
protected wilderness area in southern BC. The historic
Earl Grey Pass Trail, originally developed and used by
Indigenous peoples, crosses through the Conservancy
connecting Argenta to Invermere via Hamill and Toby
creeks. With support from various Canada-150 funding
programs, and by coordinated efforts of multiple agencies
such as The Earl Grey Trail Restoration Committee, Koo-
tenay Lake Historical Society, Lardeau Valley Historical
Society, Windermere and District Historical Society, not

 25 buildings to receive
energy retrofits
Columbia Basin Trust provides $900,000 this year
through its new Energy Retrofit Program. Twenty-five
buildings in the region, with over 500 affordable hous-
ing units, will be more energy efficient following the first
intake of Columbia Basin Trusts new Energy Retrofit
Program.
A total of 17 non-profit societies will receive support
for energy retrofits ranging from extra insulation to new
HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) sys-
tems. Grants vary from a few thousand dollars to just
over $100,000 and will help improve the sustainability
of over 500 affordable housing units located in 13 Basin
communities.
Non-profit housing organizations in the Basin
approached us for help with energy retrofits, and that
was the origin of this new program, said Mark Brunton,
Columbia Basin Trust manager, Housing. They followed
through with good projects that demonstrate a real inter-
est in making affordable housing properties more energy
efficient and sustainable, and more comfortable for their
residents.
The Trust is working with the BC Non-Profit Housing
Association and BC Housing to deliver the program.
The Trust announced the new $2-million program in
March 2017, which helps provide energy conservation
upgrades for affordable housing in the Basin. The second
grant intake will be in early 2018.

Funding for Kootenay Lake
conservation projects
The Kootenay Lake area is breathtaking and rich in
biodiversity that residents are dedicated to protecting
through the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
(KLLCF) and if you are a local conservation group, this
fund might be for you.
Established by the Regional District of Central Kootenay
(RDCK) in 2014 by referendum, the KLLCF provides fund-
ing for conservation projects in Electoral Areas A, D and E.
With 2018 fast approaching, the Kootenay Conserva-
tion Program (KCP), which works in partnership with the
RDCK to administer the KLLCF, is encouraging conserva-
tion groups operating in the participating areas to submit
funding proposals for conservation projects. Projects may
address a variety of conservation issues such as invasive
species, habitat loss and fragmentation, or disturbance to
wildlife.
The KCP will issue a formal call for proposals in Sep-
tember 2017 and the deadline for applications will be 4 pm
on November 1, 2017. In November, a Technical Review
Committee will review project proposals and make rec-
ommendations to the RDCK for final funding approval.
