WITS / PasonWITS to INSITE Depth Tracking Configuration

NOTES: PasonWITS

1. Pason WITS does not use the default INSITE installed WITS files C: \INSITE\Data\WITS\files, the
operator must install the PasonWITS application and data files by running the PasonWITS.exe application
in the C:\INSITE\Add-on-App\PasonWITS folder. This application only needs to be run if youre
running PasonWITS and the C:\INSITE\Data\PasonWITS directory plus C:\INSITE\Bin\PasonWITS.exe
is not already installed.
2. You must also set up the PasonWITS Server Sending machine either located in the Tool Pushers office
or the Company Mans. Youll need to set up their machine using HALF WITS and NOT Full WITS. See
the .Pdf named: Pason_WITS_EDR_3 0_WITS for instructions on how to setup the hardware plus the WITS
machine on their side. The number for Pason is on the second page. This document can also be found on
the Pason Server WITS machine.

Getting Started: Make sure you have the hardware, software, and documents listed below before you begin.
Hardware
o Serial 9 pin F/F cable
o Null modem adaptor
o Gender Changer (If needed only)
Software / Documents
o WITS/Pason WITS folder
o PasonWITS.exe (C:\INSITE\Add-On Apps\Pason WITS)
o Doc Pason WITS for INSITE Depth Tracking.doc (Instructions)
o Doc 3P.txt
o Doc Pason WITS.pdf (Informational)

The following Variables Need to be configured on the Pason, Rigwatch or Totco Machines for GBA/MPD/UBA Jobs
For Sperry Jobs to create Depth from incoming WITS data IRIS Data Mapping will require Block Position and Hookload.
GBA/MPD/UBA jobs also require Flow IN for our software Modeling, so need flow in or pump strokes from WITS.
All other are to be mapped if being supplied by the WITS provider.

Using PasonWITS as WITS Provider
1) See if PasonWITS has already been installed into INSITE; go to System Manager Transfer GUI.

No Yes
2) If no PasonWITS exists on the INSITE System Manager Transfer GUI it may be installed but its not on the System
Manager GUI. Check the C:\INSITE\Data directory for the C:\INSITE\Data\PasonWITS folder.

If PasonWITS folder is not installed then you will have to run the install program provided in C:\INSITE\Add-on-App
directory. To run this application INSITE must be shut down.

3) CLOSE INSITE
4) Run the PasonWITS.exe application file located in: C:\INSITE\Add-on-App\PasonWITS directory.

5) Open INSITE back up. You most likely will not have Pason WITS in the Transfer folder because GeoBalance XX.sin is not
the Sperry Default sin file. You will have to manually insert the application onto the Transfer GUI from the INSITE\Bin
directory.

6) Right click on the background in the Transfer folder

7) Select Insert an Applications Properties Box will open.
Under Label put: PasonWITS
For Exe File Name, select Change
Navigate to C:\INSITE\Bin and find the PasonWITS.exe file

8) Navigate to C:\INSITE\Bin and find the PasonWITS.exe file

And select Open

9) The Application Properties GUI should look like this if youve selected the correct .exe file:

10) Hit Apply and OK to have the Pason WITS application on the Transfer window where it should be:
Setting Up the 3P Fast File for WITS Data
11) In INSITE, open Database Admin and look for a Record Named 3P Fast.
If the record already exists, make sure you have the variables Block Position and Hookload Avg within that
record.
If the Record is not present, there are few options:
1. Build the Record (Not Recommended).
2. Imports the record from ADI export if have one.
3. Copy the Time SDL Fast record to 3P Fast using the Database Administration View
and Edit Record function Copy Record. This is my recommendation!
If 3P Fast is present, skip to step #21

12) We will go through option #3 above: Copy Record using INSITE Database Administration View and Edit Records.
Open INSITE Database Administration View and Edit Records: System Manager > Data button.

Data > Database Admin option Opens to this view

13) Click on the Pen Quill then the Record button to open View and Edit Records GUI.
14) Click on the Edit button and open the Find window.

15) Type in Time SDL Fast and hit the Find Next button.

16) You may have to continue with Find Next until you come to the Record Time SDL Fast, not any of the variables called
Time SDL Fast.

17) Highlight the Record name Time SDL Fast by clicking on the Record name.

18) Next use the Copy Record button, when the Copy Record window opens use the From record drop down to
find Time SDL Fast record. Then in the To Record option Type : 3P Fast and OK.
19) Scroll down to the bottom of the Records and you should now have the 3P Fast Record.
At this point you can remove unwanted variables from this record using the Remove Variable button.
Dont remove any variables which will be written into this record by WITS.

20) Save your work using the save button on .

Note: If this is a new install or you have not imported records or received Data Exchanges from other Parties MWD/SDL
then the Time SDL Fast and now 3P Fast records should have +/- 50 variables. If you have had imports or exchanges
into your database then who knows how many variables are now in these records. I would reduce the records in the
new created 3P Fast to a manageable number keeping the ones you believe may be needed in future WITS transfers,
it makes finding the data you want easier.
Setting Up the IRIS Data Mapping
To create our own Time/Depth records.
Have IRIS use 3P Fast Record variables WITS data for:
INSITE Depth Monitor creating Time/Depth record.
Create Time SDL Fast data.
Have available other IRIS functions / programs for use such as:
Depth, Iris Overrides, Sweep Monitor, Lag, Timer and Counters, Pumps.

21) Starting IRIS, On INSITE System Manager Go to Configure > Sperry Servers and run through the Wizard:
a) Click Next till you come to the window where you set up Depth and IRIS.
b) Select Yes and Datascans from the drop down list.
c) Select Yes and IRIS from the drop down list.
Turning on all the IRIS records (by default) will increase the size of your database, will show you later how to turn
off some of the records to reduce storing on those records.
d) Check the Hydraulics option on the bottom for MPD.

e) > click Next.

f) Click Next > follow your usual configuration > click finish.

22) Map WITS variables into Iris Data Mapping, Click on the Data Acquisition (Data Acq) icon on the System Manager:

23) Double click on IRIS Data Mapping > Edit > Records Read From ADI or the Icon that looks like a book .
24) The next GUI window may or may not have the Record 3P Fast which you are receiving WITS data into.
If the incoming WITS Record does not exist then use the New Record button to create one.
Click on New Record > select 3P Fast > click OK, ADI Records window will open. Select 3P Fast.

25) Map Block Position to Depth Analog 1 and Hookload Avg to Hookload as shown on the image below :
Required for Depth Monitor are the Block Position to Depth Analog 1 and Hookload Avg to Hookload

Map all other variables which you want put into Time SDL Fast record such as:
IRIS Data Items 3P Fast
Depth Analog 1 maps to Block Position
Hookload maps to Hookload avg
Standpipe 1 maps to SPP avg
F/G Pit Total maps to F/G Pit Total
Pump 1 Rate maps to Pump 1 Rate
Pump 2 Rate maps to Pump 2 Rate
Map by dragging the IRIS Data Item variable over to the 3P Fast window, dropping onto the target variable.

Add as many variables as needed for the job.

26) Click Done once all variables are mapped. This will restart Iris.

We still have other mapping to do to before we are finished with IRIS DATA mapping.

27) Now we must edit which records within the database IRIS will write to.

Within INSITE IRIS Data Mapping GUI (window) click on the .

This window will open

28) Click on the Advanced button and uncheck the records you dont want IRIS updating, by unchecking these
records IRIS will not update and thus reduce the size of the database.

OK to leave.

29) Setup the option to save the configuration files on another backup machine, this will allow for quick start up on that
machine if the Primary IRIS goes down. This is not meant to backup to same machine running IRIS, Iris will save
configurations automatically to the IRIS Machine.
Go to Options > Save Backup Configuration Files
Check the Enable Save Backup Files
Use the Browse button to map the backup machine
C:\INSITE\Data\IRIS\Default Config\Config

Note: You may have to share the backup directory so this option will work.
30) Next make sure the data is being written into the database by Viewing the IRIS Data Mapping. You should see what
looks like this, where 3P Fast is showing up like this:

The IRIS Data Mapping is complete.

Setting Up the Depth Monitor
31) Depth monitor allows us to Control, configure, and set depth items. Go to INSITE System Manager > Monitor window
and click on Depth. INSITE Depth Monitor window opens.

INSITE Depth Monitor window opens.

32) Go to Depth Configuration .

Need to configure Depth Source setting the Block Position option to Depth Analog 1. Find Depth Analog
1 in window option then drag and drop into the Block Position Measurement window.
Set the In Slips Configuration Radial Button to Hookload.
Set the Radial Button to Analog. .

Hit Ok to close and save settings

33) Go to Depth Calibration , you will need to make sure you make sure you have Crown Wheel is selected in order to
set the block height. Nothing else is set up in this window leave all as default except the Crown Wheel Radial Button
option checked.

34) Go to Depth Control , to set up the Hole Depth, Bit Depth, Block Height, Off Bottom Distance length, and the In/Out
Slips Hookload thresholds.

Using the WITS data change the items within Depth Control
window to match WITS data coming in such as Depth, Bit
Depth, and Block Position.

Set the In/Out of Slips Hookload: Drilling and Tripping as to

Trigger in and out of slips correctly. Adjust as needed until
working as required.
HINT: check the 3P Fast record to see what the weight is
during in slips and set slightly higher.

Its is good to keep the Force Out-Of-Slips Only When On

Bottom checked on horizontal wells due to the improper
weight distribution, i.e. stacking the weight on horizontal
wells which decrease the overall Hookload to the point in which
you might see in slips. When checked INSITE knows that if
youre on bottom; you have to be out of slips.

If using a top-drive, set both the Drilling and Tripping Hookload to be the same +/- (45 Klbs) for a land rigs.

For offshore rigs with Heavy Top-Drives, you might have to increase to possibly 75 depending on the weight of the
block and top drive.

35) Once the necessary changes are done in Depth Monitor you can put the On/Off Bottom and In/Out Slips on Automatic
and force On Bottom if you are ready to track depth. Do not have it forced out of slips.
WITS / PASON WITS Mapping
Below we are discussing Pason Mapping but remember mapping is almost the same for TOTCO, Rig Watch, 3rd
Party MudLoggers, ect. Basic WITS is the default installed WITS application not the PasonWITS. So once you
have chosen the correct type of WITS Application you can follow the instructions below to see how to
configure, setup and map in/out variables.

HINT: It is better to rename any default Configuration or Map files before editing, consider the originals as
templates. You may need to go back to them and start over is something goes wrong.

36) Open the Pason WITS application now and make sure you change the Configuration files and maps are appropriately
configured. There are some that are preset, but to a Metric Unit set.

37) Under the configuration, edit the Gas Data to Pason configuration:

38) Again, the Pason WITS install was written with Metric unit sets so youll need to change it:

From Metric to FPS as seen above.

39) Edit the configuration for Record 1 General Time Based to send to every 1 second instead of every 5 seconds (double
click on 01 General Time-Based) to open the Edit Record Attribute

40) Next youll need to edit the map (Gas Data to Pason) in order to set up the sending of a variable to Pason in order for
them to see a connection and send data to us. Send them the MPD data that the CoMan wants to see so they can
display it on the Pason Monitors.

41) Save the Configuration and select OK.

42) Change the Units from Metric (default) to FPS

43) Unmap all mapped variables in Record 01 (General Time-Based) which you do not need.

Map the MPD variables which you need to send based on their WITS numbers, have to use the Spares below 40 for
MPD Data from Record 01.

44) Save and Close

45) Before Closing the Channel settings, make sure you have the correct comm. Port and baud rate. Youll need to select
9600 as the baud rate: 9600 is a good default Baud Rate but many Companies can use others so check if this rate does
not work.
46) Next youll need to set the mapping for the data youll be receiving From Pason. Again, go to File..Channel Settings
from within PasonWITS.

47) Select the Up Arrow next to channel settings to select Channel 2 (From Pason)

48) Select the Data From Pason Configuration (Edit Configuration)

Again, youll need to edit the Unit system from Metric to FPS

49) Youll need to edit record 01 (General Time-Based) attributes to write every 1 second from the default of 5:

Select OK
50) Make sure that Record 01 is the only one enabled. You can do this by ensuring that only record #1 (General Time-
Based) is the only one with the * in the Enabled Column as seen below: If Receiving data via WITS from the MWD unit
then you will also have to have Record 09 and 10 Enabled.

NOTE: FOR WITS STANDARD, ALL RECORDS ARE ENABLED, USERS

WILL NEED TO GO IN AND DISABLE ALL THE RECORDS NOT USED
51) Close the Configuration (select Save and OK)

52) Next edit the Receiving (Pason to ADI)

53) Youll need to again change the Units from Metric to FPS

54) Now Uncap all the variables NOT USED, see example below. Every job is different so what variables you will be pulling
in depends on what the WITS provider can supply and you require (more data the better).

For MPD to track Depth, Block Position and Hookload are required.

Map 3P Fast Block Position to

record #12

Map 3P Fast Hookload to record

#14

Pason also Map Hookload to 3P

Fast Hookload Max (#15)

Continue Mapping as required.

Select Save and OK

55) Select OK to Close the Channel Settings

INITIALISING PASON WITS
56) Make sure the null modem cable or standard comms cable plus the null modem adapter is connected to the back of the
Pason EDR workstation.

57) If ready to run, and comm. Ports have been properly configured (Send and receive) Start the Send first.

58) Once you see some time and depth populated on channel one (To Pason), you can start the From Pason (Pason to ADI)

If you are receiving data, you should see the value in the #1 Record at the bottom of the screen increment.
59) You can view which variables are being received. Make sure they are being mapped
Click the Real Time Refresh

Note: WITS must be rerun after any restart of INSITE

60) Check the 3P Fast record WITS Received or PasonWITS Received to ensure Hole Depth, Block Position, and Hookload
Avg are being written.

61) If the data is being written then at this point you should see your Depth on your Depth Monitor Screen change along
with Block Height, and Bit Depth. In and Out of slips should be working as well, but may require some adjustments on
the weight limits. You can watch the weight changes in the 3P Fast record for in and out of slip settings.
Data Exchange (DX) when Running IRIS for MPD Depth

Two procedures need that will make a better and efficient Data Exchange between MPD and MWD.

1. Put the MWD computer into MPD workgroup. Only works when you have direct Lam Cable (Cat5)
running between MPD and MWD not over the satellite.
2. Use the Selected Data Set option in the Data Exchange, as not to corrupt or write over MPD Records.
Exchange to only the records MPD requires for PWD or Calculator from MWD.

If you are running IRIS on the MPD System and receiving Data Exchanged data from Sperry
MWD, you will have to limit or restrict the data being Exchanged (received). If you dont then
their data will over write the Database Records which IRIS is writing to plus cause issues
between INSITE applications trying to read (and/or) write (use) database records.

Adding MWD Computer to MPD Work Group

62) Set up (add) the MWD Data Exchange computer onto the MPD Local Network (workgroup 192.168.91.#). This keeps
the Exchange path at the rig location with the fastest connection possible for Realtime data. If you dont add the MWD
computer to MPD workgroup it will go through the Satellite on the Halliburton network. The ROC will also have to give
your IP (34. Address) permission to connect to MWD for Data Exchange. Going through Halliburtons Intranet (34. IP
address) you may be able to ping MWD computer but you will not be allowed to DX without permissions setup.

Setting up the MWD computer onto MPD workgroup, this is done on the MWD Sending/Receiving computer.
Open the Network Connections application on MWD system.

Right click on their Local Area Connection

Right click on Properties
Scroll down to Internet Protocols (TCP/IP)

Double click on Internet Protocols (TCP/IP)
Go to Advanced

IP Settings Add

Add - When the TCP/IP Address window opens add an IP with 192.168.91.# address , one that
is not already taken by another computer within the workgroup. Give it same Subnet mask as the
MPD workgroup and save.

You should now be able to ping each computer within the workgroup.
Not Selecting the Only Selected Dataset Options running IRIS Data Mapping from the MPD Computer will have unwanted

consequences to the MPD Records

Note: There are very detailed Help files within the Data Exchange Insite application under the Help option.

63) Go to Data Exchange in the System Manager Transfer GUI.

64) Set up the Allowed Transfer options in the Exchange menu > Change Allowed Settings
MWD is the sending machine
MPD is the Receiving machine

These options may have to be reset each time you start Data Exchange as the default is not to allowed to send.

OK to save setting.
65) Select the Exchange option or the button to open ADD Component setup window.

66) When starting an Exchange you have to be careful to choose the correct options as you can overwrite data by not
selecting the correct (send / receive state) option on this page.
Steps to setting up a Selected Data Set Data Exchange.
a) Both MPD and MWD Data Exchanges have to be setup correctly to send and receive Data Exchange.
b) Set the Data Exchange up to send on the MWD Machine.
c) Set the Data Exchange to Receive on the MPD Machine.

Set this option correctly !

Default Window:

There are basically four Data Selection options to transfer data, but when running IRIS for
Depth Tracking on the MPD System. Three would require the user to Restrict Records and
one requires the user to Select Records to transfer. I prefer the Data Selection Only
Selected Datasets option because I have to think each time which records to exchange thus
reducing the chances of overwriting Records within MPD database. The Records we are
trying not to over write are our Well Based Records and the Records IRIS is writing to;
Time/Depth; Time SDL Fast; and any other you have left checked in IRIS Data Mapping.
To add an exchange send component from MWD Side
To add an exchange receive component from MPD Side

Click or select Exchange>Add Component.

The Exchange Component dialog box opens.

If starting the exchange on the MPD Computer: Change the radial button to Receive from remote computer, if not
you could overwrite the MWD data. The default on initial window is SEND.

1. Select or type the Remote Computer (IP, DNS address, or node name) you want to send to, or receive from.
2. Select the Component state Active Disabled = (Paused).
3. Select to Send to or Receive from the remote computer
Select Send to on MWD Computer
Select Receive from on MPD computer
4. Select a Communications method: Normal Communications.
5. Select a Data Included option RT/Stored data.
6. Select a Mode option Continuous.
7. Select Data Selection option Only Selected Datasets : When Running IRIS
8. Select the Run the Data Mgr button - will open the directory tree in Data Manager.
9. Select the Well and Run.
10. Clicking on the Run from the right window will populate the Records in the left window
11. From the left Window select the Records you want to exchange : Hold down the Ctrl Key while picking Records
12. You can drag the Records from Data Manager into the Existing Dataset Selection Window
13. Once all required records are added, close Data Manager
14. Clear the check box to improve Transmission : Enable Database Configuration Table Transfer
15. Clear the check box Enable Configuration Change Notification to keep from changing the Run and Well on the
receivers side. We want to change our own Runs and vise verse for MWD.
16. Click OK.

Examples below of Only Selected Datasets workflow:

Opens the Data Manager GUI:

Clicking on the Active Well and Run in Right Window will open Record Names in the Left Window:

Hold down the Ctrl Key and choose the Records to exchange, drag and drop into the Existing Dataset Selection window.
Continue this process until you have selected all records to exchange. Can exchange from multi runs.
Close Data Manager
Uncheck both boxes Bottom right corner of the window:
Enable Database Configuration Table Transfer
Enable Configuration Change Notifications

Example of the MWD to exchange: PWD records, Survey record, Temp record, other sensor data the MWD tool is
collecting.

Example of Records to Exchange

Active Run
PWD Records
Survey Record
Temp Records

Records from other Runs if needed.

Once the Existing Data Section is complete you can close using the OK button.
67) On the Exchange Component Window once all option have been completed select ok to start the Exchange.
You may get a message stating this will stop and restart the exchange agree to the option.

68) Example of three exchanges: ROC - MWD MPD Backup Application Machine
Other Note:

1. Exchanges to MPD backup computers should use Data Selection option All Data in Active Well/Job
no Restrictions.
2. Exchanges over the Satellite may backup at connection but should begin to catch up over time.
3. Exchanges over the Satellite that are slow may require the reduction of Records transferred to elevate
load. Use Only Selected Datasets with Well Based and Active Run as selections.
4. Disable the Enable Database Configuration Table Transfer when possible.
5. Enable the Configuration Change Notification when Data Exchanging to Halliburtons ROC\RESC

Enable Database Configuration Table Transfer

Select this checkbox to enable the transfer of database configuration

tables. These tables define Records, Variables, Units, and Option
Lists. With this checkbox disabled (clear), performance might be improved, but newly created configuration items
will not be visible on the receiving computer.

Note The tables can be very large (500 Kbytes or more) and could take a long time to transfer if you are using a
low bandwidth connection. The configuration tables are transferred by default except in real-time only mode.
Some applications or calculator scripts might modify the configuration tables, resulting in the continuous resending
of these tables. This can make a real-time stored exchange unusable.

Enable Configuration Change Notification

Select this box if you want the sending machine to change the receiving machines Run number.
Not recommended for exchanges between MWD and MPD.
