The History of Maca

MACA is a plant that grows in the Andes located in central Peru between
9500 to 13000 feet above sea level. There are many varieties of MACA, with
"Lepidium Perunianum Chacon" being the most well known due to
scientific studies that confirm the presence of its nutrients, and benefits of
consumption. It has been considered a valuable supplement for centuries
in the areas where it has been cultivated.

In ancient Peru, during the Incas period, only the nobles had the privilege
of consuming MACA. Ever since then, without any scientific evidence, its highly nutritional properties
were very well known. In pre-Hispanic times this plant occupied a very important place in the
economy.

In his book Historia del Nuevo Mundo, Cobo B. says This plant grows in the coldest and roughest
part of the mountain ranges, where no other plant is cultivated (Volume I, pg 170) During colonial
times, for almost one century, MACA was used as a tax the farmers would pay the Spaniards.

After the Spanish conquest, the plant became in danger of extinction, but the first scientific
discoveries presented by Dr Gloria Chacon de Popovici in 1961 in her bachelor thesis brought the plant
out of obscurity. In the nineties, thanks again to Dr Chacon who published her study MACA and its
abilities, and her book The Importance of the Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon (MACA) in the
nutrition and health of the human and animal 2000 years before and after Christ in the twenty first
century, MACA has made a comeback, and laboratories and departments of sciences in Peruvian and
international universities have again acknowledged its value.

This root, which endures freezing weather and hail, used to be offered to the Gods in ancient times
just like the potato and the corn. Due to MACAs position of privilege, it was not treated as the potato
or corn.

MACA is recommended as a nutritional supplement due to its contents of minerals, chemical

compounds, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, tannins, alkaloids, etc It has been discovered that
MACA favors the calcification process in the bones, stimulates the formation and maturation of the red
blood cells, strengthens the immune system, stimulates the reproductive system for both men and
women, relieves symptoms caused by PMS, acts as a hormone replacement, and can be utilized as a
co-assistant for infirmities of malnutrition, osteoporosis, AIDS, tuberculosis, etc.

MACA's world recognition is in the hands of the United Nations for its cultivation in large scales in
regional levels. Countries like the U.S, England, Germany, Japan, France, Russia, and Italy are all
interested in MACA for its high nutritional values; Peru is the only country that contains the ideal
conditions for the growth of this plant.

Biography of Dr. Gloria Chacn de Popovici

The discoverer of the Lepidium Peruvianum Chacn, was born in Lima, Peru,
November 4th, 1940. She studied Biological Sciences in the Universidad Nacional
Mayor de San Marcos, during 1959 to 1962, receiving her Bachelors degree in 1962,
with the theme : photochemical study of Maca.
During the years of 1960 to 1991, she has specialized in different fields of Biological
Sciences. Let us see a brief review of these fields: Taxonomic botany, Phyto-
Chemistry, and Qualitative Chemistry in the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San
Marcos; Dynamics of Population and Statistical Analysis, in the Institute of Marine Resources,
Oceanography in the Institute of Marine Resources, studies of Organisms in result of Rising tides and
hydrobiology data processing from different types of water, in the Scripps Institute of Oceanography,
Jolla-California; Ecological investigations on plankton organisms in the region of the Peruvian
Current. Oceanographic maps and Letters for the Historical Atlas geography and Landscapes of Peru;
Program of Pulmonary functions in sheep, in the Institute of Pathology of Human Medicine Faculty in
the National University of San Marcos; Dr. Chacon received her Doctoral degree in Biological Sciences
in 1972, she also received an award of distinction from the University of San Marcos for her work on
medicinal effects of minerals.

Dr. Chacons investigative eagerness could not be detained; between 1972 and 1973 she studied
Micropaleontology in rocks; and between 1974-1975 Taxonomy of the micro alga Chlorella SP.

In the following years, she worked on studies of vaccines, toxins and serums. She has participated in
various Symposiums on the Maca (Lepidium Peruvianum Chacn) from 1991 to date.

In 1993, Dr. Chacon received a Grant by the National Science Foundation of (SCOR). She has published
19 scientific investigations with her own resources from 1969 to today and 10 other publications for
FISHING magazine until today.
In October 1996 Dr. Chacon was sponsored by the academic faculty of The Department of
Pharmaceuticals and Biochemistry at San Marcos University, where she presented her symposium on
the medicinal plants and vegetables of Peru.

Properties
Proteins: Maca contains an average of 11gr % in the dry root.

Fiber: The Maca root contains cellulose and lignin, that is to say, an ample amount of fibers. A big
interest in fibers has risen from investigations, which confirm that a great amount of fiber diminishes
the risk of cancer of the large intestine, stimulating the intestinal operation helping the organism
eliminate the nutritional remainders that the body does not take advantage of.

Carbohydrates: These are the principal source for human energy.

Starch: Maca contains calcium and iron, forming chemical compounds that influence the nutrition
and health of the consumer.
Fructose: A sugar used by the seminal plasma for the production of spermatozoa.

Tannins: Tannins are used internally helping in the treatment of diarrhea. Combined with other
medicines, it has the utility of treating inflammatory processes of little chronic extension like ulcers,
sores, etc.
Fatty acids: Maca contains fatty acids that work like antiseptics, fungicides, and preservatives of
foods.
Alkaloids: Maca contains 4 alkaloids, Macana 1, 2, 3 and 4. The alkaloids exert physiological action on
the human organism; they act in very small quantities, causing remarkable effects. Alkaloids contain
their own characteristics and are very different from proteins; they form salts by being soluble with
acids and also dissolve in organic solvents. The alkaloid abstract of Maca is an innocuous chemical
substance present in very small amounts, which stimulates the hormone regulators of the
reproductive system located in the brain. The alkaloid extract found in MACA also help growth
hormones, and can also activate hormones that regulate the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus
in the blood.
Macronutrients: The MACA root presents/displays essential vitamins and minerals for life, therefore
its nutritive properties help patients who are diagnosed with tuberculosis, HIV, leukemia, anemia and
convalescent people.
Calcium: The calcium found in Maca is an element of vital importance for the development of the
body. Higher concentrations of calcium are found in the MACA root than in milk; it is indispensable for
the formation of the bones, teeth, skeleton, the operation of the heart, the nerves and the
sanguineous system.

Phosphorus: The phosphorus contained in Maca helps the structural functions that affect the
skeleton, and regulates functions like the transmission of neuromuscular chemicals and electrical
stimuli. It also plays an important role in the hemostasis of calcium and in the reactions involving
carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. The body's chemical energy is stored in phosphate compounds.

Micronutrients: This part of the plant contains many minerals found in small quantities, which
together help with the production of antibodies.
Magnesium: Magnesium is essential for the activities of muscles and nerves, protein synthesis, and
many other reactions. Prolonged deficiency can cause changes in heart and skeletal muscles.

Potassium: Potassium participates in the regulation of osmotic pressure; its activity is carried out
inside the cells.
Iron: Iron is a vital component of hemoglobin and also of certain respiratory enzymes. Increased Iron
needs occur during the growth period and pregnancy, and with excessive menses and other instances
of blood loss. Iron deficiency results in anemia.
Silicon: Helps the connective tissues, including the aorta, trachea, tendons, bones, and skin, which
contain almost all of the bodys silicon.

Sodium: Along with potassium, sodium reduces arterial pressure. It was discovered that an increase
in the daily diet of the sodium-potassium relation helps people with hypertension; nevertheless, an
excessive increase of this relation could give rise to a diminution of the susceptibility to the cerebral-
vascular accidents that do not depend on the arterial pressure.

Manganese: In an experimental diet of this element, results demonstrated that it induced growth in
mice and altered the reproduction in rats. They are still pending results for manganese in the people.
Copper: Copper is a probable participant in the formation of hemoglobin. A lack of copper can greatly
decrease the amount of essential enzymes for the organism.

Tin and Aluminum: These elements are generally associated with calcium and silica, forming
carbonates and silicates that take part in the formation of the bones.
Zinc: Zinc serves as a cofactor of dehydrogenises and carbonic anhydrate; its lack can cause skin
rashes, taste disturbances, and mental lethargy. A diet based on zinc, magnesium and vitamins A, E,
and K, helps reduce the damage that arises as a result parasitism.

Bismuth: There are not many references about bismuth, but it is known to participate in the
processing against gastritis caused by bacteria.
Vitamins: The MACA root also contains vitamins B1, B2, and C. Vitamin B1 helps the body cells convert
carbohydrates into energy. It is also essential for the functioning of the heart, muscles, and nervous
system. B2 works with the other B vitamins. It is important for body growth and red cell production,
and helps in releasing energy from carbohydrates. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is involved in oxidation-
reduction reactions. A deficiency of this vitamin results in scurvy.

Nutritional Supplement
MACA is recommended as a nutritional supplement; the reason for this is because MACA favors the
process of calcification in the bones, stimulates the formation and maturation of the red globules and
fortifies the immune system. MACA stimulates the reproductive system of men and women and can be
used as an ally to fight AIDS, osteoporosis, malnutrition, stress, and tuberculosis. Due to scientific
studies of more than forty-one years, Dr. Chacon fully recommends the use of the MACA root for its
high nutritional value. Contrary to the industrialization of MACA, Dr. Chacon recommends the natural
use of MACA, as it was utilized by the ancient Peruvians.

It contains the highest calcium concentration than any other plant of its sort. For this reason it is a
good nutritional supplement for those who are anemic, and convalescent people who are diagnosed
with infirmities requiring the formation of red globules; also very effective for menopause.

MACA contains more proteins than any other tubercles. It is also abundant in phosphorus, iron, iodine,
and calcium. Iodine is a great reconstituent of the endocrine glands, especially the thyroid. Calcium
and phosphorus help with the bone formation of the body, and also contain carbohydrates that the
body uses to maintain and replace energy.

Energy Booster
MACA has been proven to contain high nutritional and biological values, since its chemical
composition contains proteins, vitamin, fats, calcium, cellulose, starches, phosphorus, iodine, iron,
complex B and vitamin C. Although there are people who dont feel some change when consuming
MACA, the positive effects on the organism are undeniable. It is easy to find announcements related to
MACA as the Ying Peruvian Seng, because when consumed ,people feel agile and are not sleepy during
the day - similar to the effects of the Ying Seng. People who are physically active, are more likely to
feel the effects of MACA faster than those who are not, because it restores energy and makes them feel
less tired.

MACA is 100% natural, and for this reason it is continually attracting athletes who wish to increase
their performance and endurance in a safe and effective way. The results obtained from taking MACA
are not as instant as taking banned substances such as anabolic steroids, its results are gradual and
do not cause harm to the organism.
MACA contains the highest calcium concentration than any other plant of its sort. For that reason it is
a powerful reconstituent for anemic and convalescent people who have diseases that require the
formation of red globules; good also for menopause.

To the question of why MACA can help those who are diagnosed with AIDS, Dr. Chacn states that its
high iron content fortifies patients with cancer, their alkaloids act on the Central Nervous System
producing energy in people who consume it, this is specially noticed in the treatment of the of older
patients. Therefore it is very probable that together with other components, science can use MACA for
treatment of patients diagnosed with AIDS.

It has been discovered that Maca contains more proteins that any other tubercle. It also contains a
high content of phosphorus, iron , iodine and calcium. Iodine is a great reconstituent of the endocrine
glands , specially the thyroid. Calcium and the phosphorus help with the growth of the human body
and the bone formation; MACA also contains carbohydrates that the human body uses for its
maintenance and the replacement of energy.

Strengthens The Immune System

Nutritional and Medicinal: In the medical aspect, MACA has been proven to stimulate action in the
bloodstream. It strengthens the hemoglobin, whose responsibility is to oxygenate the tissues of the
animal organism; MACA also strengthens the leukocytes, which are important to the immune system.

Leukocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets are suspended in a yellowish solution, called plasma, which
forms our blood. This plasma contain more than blood, it also includes sugars, fats, vitamins, together
with salts like calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. Six or seven percent of the
plasma is composed of proteins. These proteins are involved with the immune system of the organism
against infirmities and infections.

In 1994, Dr. Virginia Garro, expressed in her national diary which has studied the properties of MACA
for more than 20 years, that the analysis performed by her and other scientists in other parts of the
world determines that the properties of MACA strengthen the immune system.

To the question of why MACA can help those who are diagnosed with AIDS, Dr. Chacn states that its
high iron content fortifies patients with cancer, their alkaloids act on the Central Nervous System
producing energy in people who consume it, this is specially noticed in the treatment of the of older
patients. Therefore it is very probable that together with other components, science can use MACA for
the treatment of patients diagnosed with AIDS.

An Aphrodisiac That Fights Impotence

While scientific studies continue to be performed and until results are presented, it is becoming more
popular for doctors to refer to Maca as a natural substitute, rather than the famous pill in the
pharmaceutical laboratories Pfizer Viagra.
Different from any other chemical product, with the tendency to have side effects, and so cannot be
prescribed to all people indiscriminately, Maca - Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon- is a completely
natural product and does not contain any side effects known for more than forty years in which
scientific and clinical investigations have been performed under the supervision of its discoverer Dr.
Gloria Chacon de Popovici; the effects of taking Maca regularly (two teaspoons daily mixed with juice,
milk, etc...) are permanent.

Maca, also known as the Ginseng of the Andes and the Viagra of the ancient Incas, because of its
aphrodisiac attributes, acts directly on the blood stream, which is translated directly into a vigorous
action in the pelvic zone of men and women increasing sexual performance. The permanent effects of
Maca Imperial, increase and maintain sexual stimulation and desire.

The halls of the United States family courts are full, and the numbers increase with each day that goes
by; with couples that have marital problems and are thinking about divorce. Statistics show that the
main reason for this problem is linked to sexual dysfunctions, mainly due to erective problems in men.
Marriage counseling has not been enough because when there is a physical problem, the treatment
should be more than words. Therefore MACA IMPERIAL has helped keep couples together, and
essentially, families.

Infertility
The fertilizing effects of MACA are undeniable; it contains a biochemical substance that stimulates the
brain and the reproductive organs. Many have proven that MACA favors fertility and helps to regulate
the menstrual cycle. Castro De Leon (1998) affirms that it all seems to indicate that MACA is an
excellent invigorator, which can perform real miracles in people afflicted with problems related to
frigidness, sterility, or all these deficiencies together. As a result, many women that regularly consume
the MACA root have returned to being very fertile.

Some of the work and investigations indicate the following results:

REA and PULGAL VIDAL (1980), the MACA root contains properties that help with fertility, since positive
results were obtained when given to sterile animals. According to REA, the protein rich content of the
MACA root make it superior to roots cultivated 2500 meters above sea level. (Ibis, pg. 105).
HELMAN M. (1985) states that reproductive function of MACA is well known.
LEON (1974) other than its nutritional values, MACA increases reproduction in animals and humans,
the colonial Spaniards knew this even before todays scientific results. (Ibis, pg 105).
Testimonies
Fertilizing Actions of Maca: Dr. Freddy Madrid Giranda; Dr. Gloria Chacon de Popovici, Universidad
Mayor de San Marcos, MACA nutritional course II, December 3-5, 1998.

CASE #1: Silvia, 12 kg Cocker Spaniel, 1.5 years old. Ever since Silvi was born, she

never went into heat. She was given 2 grams of MACA with her food and after 3 months she went into
heat. She was mounted manually as shown in the photograph. Silva was impregnated and went
through normal labor giving birth to 4 healthy puppies. One of the puppies was given to the owner of
the male.

CASE #2: Yosi, a 30 kg German Sheppard, 2 years old. Ever since she was born,

Yosi was never in heat. She was given 5 grams of MACA with her food for 77 days. She went into heat
and was mounted manually. She was impregnated, went through a normal labor and gave birth to 9
puppies, 2 died during the process and 7 survived, 2 females and 5 males, all healthy.

CASE #3: Pepita de Altamira, a 23 kg Basset Hound, 4.5 years old. Ever since her

birth, Pepita never went into heat. She was given 3.5 grams of MACA for 58 days. She went into heat
and was mounted manually. She was impregnated, went though labor and had a cesarean. She gave
birth to 9 puppies, 1 died during the process and 8 survived, 4 males and 4 females, all healthy.
Studies show that the use of MACA in animals is not only limited to dogs, as discussed in her book
MACA, the Medicinal and Nutritional Plant from Peru, by Dr. Lida Obregon Vilches, 1st edition, 1988;
Lima, Peru.
The Zoological Faculty from the University of Central Peru, Huancayo, in 1995 presented the following
thesis: Effects of MACA in the presentation of heat in cows in the Chaera Valdivia stable in Matahuasi-
Concepcion, the results were overwhelming as to the procreation of the animals.
There is an interesting investigation involving the use of MACA and the reproduction of sheep. In 1961,
Yauri and Valerion studied the volume, ph, concentration of the seminal fluid, motility of the
spermatozoids, and used this information to determine the effects of MACA in sheep. They used 12
sheep around five years of age and administered 80 grams of MACA orally in 300cc for the space of 15
days.
MACA did have a significant effect on the amount of semen ejaculated, concentration of seminal fluid
and spermatozoid motility. (Tony Matos Tovar, 1995). Therefore, the use of MACA in sheep increased
the production of semen and the activity of the spermatozoids.
In 1961, Dr. Chacon de Popovici performed studies in rats and frogs as part of her thesis to obtain her
bachelors degree in Biological Sciences: Phyto-chemical study of the Lepidium Meyenii Walp. The
purpose of her research was to investigate the frequency of procreation and the effects of MACA on
the reproductive organs of these animals. Her research showed that MACA had vigorous effects on the
maturation of the follicles (structure in the ovary that produces the egg), and increased the number of
spermatozoids in males. Studies performed with animals have always yielded great results. According
to Dr. Chacon, the fertilizing effects of MACA have been scientifically proven.

Peruvian Maca-Hormonal Balance From Within

MACA rejuvenates the endocrine system for both men and women.
The importance of hormones to our health and well-being cannot be overstated. Researchers on the
aging process have repeatedly stated that it is caused, in large part, by the drop in all important and
major hormones. Conversely, supplementing with natural, nontoxic forms of hormones can slow or
even reverse some aspects of the aging process. However obtaining all of the necessary in the correct
amounts can be a complex balancing act. Many women end up taking estrogen, progesterone,
testosterone, and DHEA, in an attempt to reproduce a youthful hormonal balance. And taking these
substances can signal the master glands of the body, the hypothalamus, and pituitary, to produce
fewer hormones internally.
But what would happen if there were a way to re-stimulate the entire endocrine system, starting with
the master glands and proceeding to affect all the other major endocrine glands? What if those glands
could be rejuvenated, as nature intended, so that we could produce adequate amounts of our own
hormones once again? According to prominent researchers, there is a way to accomplish this
seemingly impossible goal. By taking an herb called Peruvian MACA, most women can release their
dependence upon taking hormones.

MACA Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon, is a turnip-like root that grows at a high elevation in the
Peruvian Andes Mountains. Prized by the Incas and later by the Spaniards, MACA is now emerging
from obscurity and near-extinction to take its place among the most valuable herbs known to
mankind. It contains large amounts of calcium and potassium, as well as iron, silica, and many trace
minerals. For this reason it is used in Peru and elsewhere to treat and to prevent osteoporosis.
Most striking, in any way, is the fact that the MACA root contains natural substances, which stimulate
the pituitary and hypothalamus. These glands in turn trigger the ovaries, adrenals, testes, thyroid, and
pancreas to return to healthy functioning, thus producing normal amounts of hormones. This has
been demonstrated with the sex hormones through the use of saliva hormone examine. In addition, a
number of people taking thyroid medication have also found that they can cut down or stop taking
thyroid hormone. MACA is also described as having powerful energizing and fertility affects. It can
help couples that are trying to conceive a child, as it affects in both sex, increasing sperm count in a
matter of days.

MACA is used and endorsed by prominent doctors such as Gabriel Cousens and Burton Goldberg. It is
being prescribed by a number of doctors to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, adrenal exhaustion, and
to restore energy and vigor to the elderly. MACA is described as an aphrodisiac for both men and
women, undoubtedly because of its effects on testosterone levels. Several prominent medical
doctors, including Dr.Burton Goldberg, have publicly stated that it greatly improved their sexual
functioning.
No one product is effective for all women, but in most cases, MACA works very well. Nurse practitioner
Stephanie Smith from New York State says that 95% of the women in her practice have been
successful in using MACA under her guidance. Dr. Muller says that she would put the figure as at least
90%. Women who have had complete hysterectomies, usually have a more difficult time in using
MACA to supply their hormonal needs, but in many cases this is still possible. Hugo Malaspina,MD, a
respected doctor from Lima, describes the case of a patient who had her ovaries removed. The
woman was taking HRT but still did not feel well. When examined, she had a very low estrogen level
despite the hormone replacement therapy. Two months after she began taking MACA, the patient was
re-tested and showed adequate estrogen levels. MACA enabled the adrenals to make sufficient
hormones to avoid symptoms, commented Dr. Malaspina.

Cultivated only in the Andes of Peru, MACA is grown at a higher elevation than any other food or
medicinal product on our planet. The MACA root is harvested, dried and powdered, then taken orally.
The active ingredients in MACA are not phyto-estrogens, nor are they hormone like substances such
as are found in wild yam. Instead, they are naturally occurring alkaloids. Dr. Gloria Chacon, a biologist
from Peru, states that the alkaloids in MACA act on the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, which explains
whythe effects in humans are not limited to [the] ovaries and testes, but also act on the adrenals,
giving a feeling of greater energy and vitality, and on the pancreas and thyroid as well. Organically
grown MACA is highly recommended as it has the highest percentage of active ingredients.
MACA is beneficial for women from peri-menopause, through the change, and beyond. It is
recommended for the peri-menopausal woman for two reasons. First, it will usually relieve the
symptoms of peri-menopause because it has a balancing effect on the hormones. For example, if you
are estrogen dominant, MACA will increase progesterone levels so that your hormones will come into
balance with each other. Secondly, taking MACA from peri-menopause on will help to keep your
endocrine system toned and healthy, making it likely that youll sail through menopause.
Women will find MACA a safe and completely drug-free alternative to using hormones. Women who
have been using estrogen and progesterone of any sort will need to make a gradual transition to using
MACA. This may take anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months and is done gradually so
that the body naturally adjusts to producing its own hormones. Usually, women also find that they no
longer need to supplement with other hormones such as pregenolone or DHEA.
Post-menopausal women who are not currently using hormones will also benefit from the use of
MACA. Not only will they find help to raise hormone levels to a healthy post menopausal state, but it
will assist in preventing osteoporosis. In Peru, several prominent doctors to treat osteoporosis and the
healing of bone fractures prescribe MACA. Stephanie Smith, RN, says that One patient who has been
taking MACA for over a year had a series of bone density studies done that showed increased density
in the spine. Osteoporosis is a serious and potentially dangerous condition. Taking a small amount of
Peruvian MACA daily is an inexpensive and effective way to support bone health.

MACA can also help with chronic fatigue syndrome and general fatigue brought on by aging. It is being
prescribed for people with CFS and in many cases it does help, because it raises DHEA and cortisol
levels. Most people with CFS have adrenal fatigue, and MACA is very effective for rebuilding exhausted
adrenal glands. This will take time, if the adrenals are exhausted by long-term stress; although in
some cases noticeable increases in energy can occur within a couple of weeks. Doctors to increase
vigor or energy in the elderly also prescribe MACA.
In addition to balancing hormones, MACA can work on a gradual, continuous basis to improve all-over
health. MACA is known as an adaptogen which means that it works in harmony with the body,
regardless of age or sex.

In a conversation of Elora Gabriel with Dr.Viana Muller, they discussed Dr. Mulleys belief that
somewhere on the planet, there is an herb or plant to meet every need of the human body. Maca
Imperial, coming from the rarefied airs of the Peruvian highlands, is the royal road to endocrine health
and hormonal balance.

Help Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects more than 60% of women worldwide in their post menopause
stage; nevertheless there is great news about an effective product that prevents and controls this
disease. From the Peruvian Andes comes MACA (scientific name: Lepidium Perivianum Chacon),
natures miracle remedy. MACA grows in the plains of the Peruvian Andes more than 4,000 meters
above sea level; no other place in the world offers the climate, soil, and altitude necessary for the
development of this root.

Osteoporosis consists of the progressive decalcification of the bones, eventually making them more
fragile and easier to break. In the most cases after the age of 35, the human being loses 1.5% of his/her
calcification capacity each year. This is why Osteoporosis is not solely a feminine infirmity; men can
also become infected. But in the specific case of women, who lose a great amount of calcium during
periods of pregnancy and lactation, the risk of becoming effected is much greater.

The MACA root has been used ever since the time of the Incas as a solution for problems with pain in
the bones and muscles, and physical exhaustion. For centuries the medicine men near the Andes have
recommended the use of MACA as a cure for arthritis, which they suppose come as a result from the
cold weather.

MACA has been proven to help the process of calcification in the bones; it also stimulates the
physiological aspect of the ovaries whose direct result is the production of estrogen in women.
As a result of menopause, there is a lower production of estrogen; women tend to lose the capacity to
absorb calcium and as a result their bones start to lose size and consistency. MACA not only helps to
healthily increase the hormonal levels in post menopause stages, it also helps prevent Osteoporosis
and helps with the rapid healing of bone fractures.
MACA is a natural product that fights many infirmities including Osteoporosis; there are no side effects
and no secondary effects.
The ancient Peruvians used this ancient knowledge, and fortunately the same civilization has brought
this knowledge back to light for the benefit of all humanity.

Maca and Nasa

The MACA Peruvian plant has been cultivated for thousands of years by the
ancient Peruvians, the Incas, for its nutritional, medicinal and fertility properties
now known scientifically in the twentieth century.
Carlos Noriega, a Peruvian-American astronaut for NASA said the Peruvian
scientists must present projects to NASA. Such was the impact on Dr. Chacon
that she decided to visit Noriega , it was decided that scientific studies could be
performed with MACA in space due to its nutritional value, and properties which
help with the reproductive system. Many animals lose their reproductive abilities
while in space and MACA would be an ideal supplement to experimentally
restore these abilities. As a result, NASA is now using MACA as a nutritional supplement for its
astronauts. MACA helps these astronauts maintain their physique and helps their lucidity and reflexes
needed to fulfill important and risky missions.
Countries like the U.S, England, Japan, Germany, France, Russia, and Italy are all interested in the
MACA root for its high nutritional values; Peru is the only country that contains the ideal conditions for
the growth of this plant.

Children and Maca

One frequent illness found in children from developing countries is malnutrition. In relation to this, Dr.
Gloria Chacon and Dr. Jorge Aguila Calderon, in the National Course of Maca II, Huancayo, 3-5 of
December 1998 demonstrated: In the beginning of 1997 we had carried out observations in a span of
one month, to children of 1 to 6 years of age; giving them small doses of MACA root in boiled extract
form or micro pulverized, obtaining excellent results. This way we have been able to observe that in a
short period of time and in small quantities, MACA can improve the state of anemia, and the
regulation of hours of sleep in most delicate cases. Following observations of one month after the use
of MACA, results have shown a clear recuperation in children with low levels of hemoglobin.
Action of Maca to Malnourished Children:
The use of MACA as a nutritional supplement varies according to the age and nutrition of the
individual. For example, a boy of 1 to 2 years of age needed 3 grams of MACA extract daily, to raise his
hemoglobin of 11.8g/100ml before the treatment to 12.6g/100ml after 30 days, also improving the
count of red blood cells, and strengthening his defense against Leukocytes. The daily dosage was
carried out before lunch, but one can vary the time of intake, you can take MACA in the morning with
milk, or during lunch with juices. The MACA root should not be taken with soups or salty foods
because the table salt together with the salt which is contained in the MACA will alter the chemical
composition of the soup giving it a bitter taste. In Valeries case (3 years old), she showed anemia with
10.4g/100ml of hemoglobin, and 3020.000 c/ml of red blood cells, slept 15 hours a day and did not
have an appetite. One year prior to that, she suffered an inflammation in the lymph nodes, she was
extremely malnourished, traveled to Huancayo and recovered, but once again did not want to eat and
felt very sleepy or drowsy. She was given 1gram of micro pulverized MACA daily before lunch for one
month. Blood analysis was done and there was an increase in her red blood cells to 4`128. 000 c/ml,
and her hemoglobin went up from 10.4 grams to 13.5 gr/100ml; that is to say that in one month it went
up more than 3 gr/100ml of blood.
According to Dr. Gloria Chacon de Popovici, it is necessary to emphasize the action of the alkaloids,
which are proteins, and iron of the MACA that can be utilized to combat anemia and act as stimulants
for the formation of red blood cells. They could equally be used to fight infirmities like leukemia.
MACA is also recommended to aid with respiratory infirmities, and rheumatism. Another great thing
about MACA is that it is an "adaptogen", meaning that it works in harmony with the body, regardless
of your age or sex.
Conclusion:
The daily administration of 3 grams of MACA for kids one year and a half years old, and 1 gram of micro
pulverized MACA for kids 3 years of age who contain low levels of hemoglobin, for a period of one
month has been sufficient to compliment the need of macro and micronutrients (Dr. Gloria Chacon de
Popovici, 1998) for the recovery and maintenance of the state of health and the productive capacity of
kids. This scientific discovery gives us the guidelines for the doses that should be used in the present
and future. Because of MACA's nutritional values, it should be introduced to daily diets as a food
complement.

This study has been carried out due to the collaboration of Dr. Hugo Vizcarra, who

reviewed the hematological exams made by Dr. Gloria Chacon de Popovici, and provided her with the
Clinical Analysis Laboratory to carry out the hematological analysis. Additional thanks goes to Ms.
Maria, Laboratory Technician, Geological Engineer Oscar Palacios, Institute Director of INGEMMET of
Geology, Chemical Engineer Rufo Paredes Pacheco, Laboratory Director of INGEMMET, and also his
assistants: Maria Jara, Chemical Analysist, Maritza Rodriguez, Bachelor in Chemical Engineering, and
Technicians Marcial Neto and Wimper Bazan, for their valuable cooperation in the chemical analysis of
the MACA root.
This study has been related with the authors own resources.

Dental Health
Dr Elvin and Dr Ailyn Silvesty explain, some risks related to dental health.
Everyone faces the possibility of loosing teeth it they fail to care for them properly. Research shows
that post-menopausal women may be at a higher risk than the rest of the population of developing
gum disease, which may result in tooth loss. The reason can be found in recent studies that have
linked low estrogen levels (which occur in women who have gone through menopause) to periodontal
disease. Add osteoporosis, a disease typified by the systematic loss of bone structure, and the
problem becomes even greater. Women suffering from osteoporosis may have less jawbone density,
increasing the possibility of loosing teeth.
Taking a small amount of
MACA IMPERIAL daily is an inexpensive and effective way to support bone health.

No Weight Gain
Regardless of what some might think, Maca does not cause weight gain! People of any age can use
Maca as a nutritional supplement. The very low contents of fat and high contents of carbohydrates
found in Maca is the perfect combination for those who are on a diet you can say that it is part of an
ideal diet. Maca has a high percentage of fiber that contributes to a good and healthy digestion.
It has been proven to increase fertility, its an aphrodisiac, it regulates the menstrual cycle, its
nutritious, a physical and mental energizer, fights cholesterol, and it contains vitamins, calcium, and
proteins. But most important of all: It does not cause weight gain!

Maca Summary
The native Peruvians, the Incas, have used the Maca root for both its nutritional and medicinal
properties. It contains significant amounts of amino acids, complex carbohydrates, and minerals
including potassium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, iron, and vitamins A, B1, B2, B12, C and
E.
Maca for Adults: This herb has been traditionally used and suggested as an aid to Reduce Stress,
Energy Booster, Reduce and Stabilize High Blood Pressure, Promote Mental Clarity Increase Energy,
Vitality, Stamina and Endurance in Athletes, Improve Thyroidal Conditions, Reinforce the Immune
System, Strength the Hemoglobin and Leukocytes, Reduce Cholesterol, Prevent Osteoporosis,
Increase Libido, as an Aphrodisiac and Fertility Enhancement for Men and Women, for Male
Impotence, Menstrual Irregularities and Hormone Imbalances, including Menopause and Hot Flashes.
Maca is not a hormone; it nourishes the hormonal system to maintain optimal health, and works
through the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to help balance the endocrine glands. Maca root is
gaining reputation amongst weight lifters and body builders as a natural substitute to anabolic
steroids, due to the number of steroidal glycosides present in the root. Many doctors prescribe the
pure Maca, to increase vitality in the elderly and to improve their osteoporosis condition with great
success.
Is Maca for Children? Dr.Gloria Chacon had performed tests over a period of time with the assistance
of Dr.Freddy Madrid Gironda and Dr.Jorge Aguila Calderon on local children in Peru, with similar
results obtained by adults. Children, who had difficulty with attention and staying focused, improved
significantly from these symptoms; in addition, they became more alert, calmer, and their anemic
condition improved considerably.
How to use Maca Imperial: The powder may be mixed in water, milk, chocolate, yogurt, juices or
almost any other beverage. It mixes easily with any beverage and has a taste of its own. Maca Imperial
is ideal several hours before athletic activity. A favorite is mixing it in a protein drink and adding
banana, strawberry or other desired fruit. The recommended dosage is one teaspoon (aprox.1.500mg)
once a day for children and adolescents, and one teaspoon once or twice a day for adults. For best
results be consistent.
Since Maca Imperial has an energizing effect, avoid taking it in the evening hours, not to disturb your
sleep.
Some confusion exists about Maca today with several species of Maca being sold. The only species
supported by scientific studies is Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon. Named after the researcher,
Dr.Gloria Chacon de Popovici, this Maca is known to contain all the nutrients and alkaloids
responsible for the medicinal and beneficial effects Maca is famous for. Other species called Maca are
wild or are not grown in the proper zone and altitude of 11.000 to 14.500 feet in the Peruvian Andes
Mountains and do not meet the medicinal and nutritional values of Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon.
Some companies that sell Maca dilute the product or mix the Maca with other herbs or ingredients.
Sometimes you cant even tell how much pure Maca is included in the product. A research has
determined that Maca works best on its own and pure form Our Maca powders are all 100% pure
Maca. We use only the Maca root itself and not leaves that contain little to no herbal importance.
Some Maca resellers grind the leaves in with the root, significantly diluting the potency of the
resultant powder. Even though they may still call that product pure maca, it is not. Be sure that our
Maca is free from any leaf contamination and other ingredients. Contrary to industrialization of Maca,
Dr. Chacn recommends its use as a nutritional and medicinal root; in its natural form, as the ancient
Peruvians, the Incas, used it over 2000 years ago. Our 6.3 oz of Maca Imperial in powder and our bottle
with 90 capsules, contain the best and purest Maca you can get. It does not cause weight gain.

For Your Information

Because not all people display the same organic deficiencies, results from taking MACA Imperial may
vary. As is the case with all natural products, MACA does not produce immediate effects; antibiotics
are a good example of this. Effects may vary from 48 to 72 hours depending on the individuals
organism.
MACA Imperial is a nutritional supplement whose main purpose is to help establish good health and
not to cure infirmities. If you think you have a health problem, please seek help from a qualified
professional. MACA Imperial is not to be used as a substitute for medical treatment prescribed by your
Doctor. Nonetheless, more than 40 years of scientific investigations guarantee that MACA Imperial
may be used to help with various health problems.
