It is a lively and cheerful dance that deserves to be recognized and enjoyed by those who choose to visit Corrientes. Moreover, this rhythm constitutes a cultural aspect that goes beyond the music itself since it displays a form of personal and collective expression. When someone is able to describe peoples emotions in the lyrics of a song, Sapukay emerges from deep inside the soul. What is more, poetry, which is represented by the lyrics of the songs, constitutes a clear expression of Corrientes history, traditions and of its everyday nature. Chamames History On Friday the 6th of September of 1985, the Club Sportivo Juventus stadium was the headquarters of the First National Chamam Celebration. As a result, this event settled the starting point of one of the most popular folkloric festivals in the country and the greatest one of this genre in the world. In fact, on May the 22nd of 1985, Argentinas Department of Foreign Trade announced that Corrientes would be the official headquarters to hold the National Chamam Celebration. It was then that Juan Carlos Cosarinskys unmistakable voice let his emblematic opening cry out Corrientes, Capital Nacional del Chamam. Three times did the main Chamam stars perform at stage so far. Some of them are: Isaco Abitbol, los Hermanitos Sena, Rosendo y Ofelia, Nini y Rudy Flores, Mateo Villalba y su trio, Mara Ofelia, Los Hermanos Barrios, Teresa Parodi, las Hermanas Veras, Flores- Miqueri, Mario Bofill and Paquito Aranda. Also, some duets took part in the celebration such as Vera- Monzn, Blas Martnez Riera, Eustaquio Minio (son), Coquimarola, Vern-Palacio, Los de Imaguar, Ramona Galarza, Cuarteto santa Ana, Raul Barboza, Antonio Tarrag Ros, Pocho Roch, among others. Chamam has reached the east of Chaco, the north of Santa Fe and Entre Ros. Not to mention it has spread to the south and east part of Misiones and Formosa. Therefore, all of these provinces have collaborated in making this dance more captivating. According to a reporter from Buenos Aires, Chamam from Corrientes has got some special features: what is heard, what is seen and what is danced are accompanied by the outstanding performances of the Official Ballet and the National Folkloric Ballet emphasizing traditions. However, some instruments such as keyboards, electric and bass guitars and even drums may appear on stage. However, what evokes the greatest feeling is the sound of guitarras de caja, bandoneones, accordions, the voices and sapukay, a festive cry for which many bands hire an expert. Likewise, in front of the public, these coexist with such comfort and harmony and they are the crucial elements to differentiate this festivity from any other mass meetings of people of different ages and social classes. Additionally, the elderly enjoys the show sitting down or dancing around the stage. However, the youth can be found at the back in what is called rave chamamecera, where friendship and games of seduction blend. What is more, the majority of them carry portable coolers with drinks and food inside. Furthermore, this year a novelty has been introduced, the chori-mboca, a tasty chorizo served inside a grilled cornmeal dough. This popular celebration has a distinct personality that does not resemble not even one of others that take place during the summer around the whole country because this gatherings aim is to highlight traditions. Finally, Chamam celebration takes place every year at the end of January.
