Baity Hill killing leaves community reeling

A domestic dispute
resulted in the death
of a 5-year-old.

There is light in the darkest
of places. If shed had a pen,
28-year-old Baity Hill resi-
dent Lauren Talmor would
have left a note with those
words for Victor Olowu when
she saw him a few days after
his 5-year-old son was killed.
Talmor saw Olowu, an MBA
student at UNCs Kenan-
Flagler Business school, as he
was walking into the apart-
ments management office,
his arm in a sling with a cast
stretching up to his shoulder.
I just started shaking,
Talmor said. As a parent, I
cant imagine something like
that.
Around midnight on Aug.
20, Victor Olowu called 911.
Victor was sleeping when his
wife, Ebony Olowu, stabbed
him in the face, he said to a
911 dispatcher over the phone.
She cut me, he said. Help
me.
The bleeding was severe,
and he told the dispatcher, I
think Im about to pass out.
When officers from
University police arrived at
Olowus home apartment
111 of the Baity Hill complex,
a graduate and family housing
community at UNC Olowu
told officers that his wife had
injured or killed their son.
After going into the apart-
ment, officers learned Ebony
Olowu had gone into a bath-
room and injured herself,
according a search warrant.
Victor Olowu, 32, and
Ebony Olowu, 34, were taken
to the hospital for treatment.
According to the incident
report, Ebony Olowu could
face charges of murder and
non-negligent manslaughter.
Randy Young, a DPS spokes-
person, said he could not
comment on Ebony Olowus
current condition, but no for-
mal charges have been filed.
While searching the apart-
ment, officers found medi-
cation prescribed to Ebony
Olowu for depression and
seizures, according to the
warrant. They also found a

new name
A petition wants to
change Carrboro to
Unicornboro.

A petition surfaced on Care2

Petitions to rename the town of
Carrboro to Unicornboro and had
26 signatures as of Monday night.
The petitions creator, Ralph G.,
stated on the petition website that
he wanted to change the town
name because of its namesake
Julian Shakespeare Carr and his
racist past.
The petition motions for the
change to Unicornboro because
Julian Carr was an outspoken
white supremacist and every-
one knows that Unicorns are a lot

Damon Seils said he acknowl-
edged the name change as some-
thing to look toward in the future,
but said the work the Town of
Carrboro has done has created a
larger impact.

On every night of its fall camp, the
North Carolina football team holds a
meeting. There is little discussion of
the sport itself. Theres been plenty of
that already, and there will be more.
Instead, head coach Larry Fedora and
his players sit and just talk.
They talk about life. They talk
about the country. They touch on
plenty of topics in Fedoras words,
the things that they need to know
as men.
So, Larry, did you and the guys
talk about Charlottesville?
Yeah, we talked about
Charlottesville, Fedora said at a
practice last week. We talked about
the rally that happened the other
night. We talk about that, and we let
everyone express their feelings.

Jessica Anderson took to Facebook
to express her disdain for Silent
Sam after last weeks protests at the
monument.
A Facebook comment was left
on Andersons post in disagree-
ment with her views and said
Anderson was a liberal parasite,
who perpetuate(s) lies and hate.
Anderson replied with a photo of a
donation to the Southern Poverty
Law Center.
She ended the photo caption with
#DonateAgainstHate.
Do I want to engage in a battle
of words with someone who is a self-
described Klan member or do I want
to turn it into something positive?
Anderson told us.
She said she decided to make it
into a viral campaign, after a few
friends of hers found it interest-
ing. Since then, the SPLC and oth-
ers have gotten involved with the
#DonateAgainstHate campaign.
The inspiration for Andersons
#DonateAgainstHate campaign
came from an event called Rechts
Gegen Rechts (the Right Against
the Right) in Wunsiedel, Germany.

Faculty focuses in on Silent Sam

Silent Sam dominated
the conversation at the
Faculty Executive Committee
Meeting Monday afternoon,
with some members calling
on Chancellor Carol Folt to
make a stronger statement
and condemn the Universitys
controversial past.
Folt said she is the first
chancellor to publicly call for
Silent Sam to be taken down
for safety reasons. She also said
she has an obligation to refrain
from biased and political
speech that could shut down
public discourse on the subject.
I do think right now its a
public safety issue, and I feel
like I am saying that in a very
clear way, Folt said. I think
that I can make a real state-
ment there, and quite frankly
I dont think that we have
had the conversation as a
University about the value of
historical monuments.
Folt said many people in the
University community believe
the power to remove the statue
is entirely in her hands, but she
said the Board of Governors
and the Board of Trustees
play a significant role in the
decision-making process.
UNC School of Law
professor Eric Muller directly
addressed Folt and said he
wants her to condemn the
hate the statue represents.
Folt said that in the next
few weeks, the University will
be releasing a frequently asked
questions document that will
have answers to many of the
commonly asked questions
about Silent Sam. She said she
hopes this will help to clear up
misconceptions about her role

is rebranding itself as Blue
Hill District.
The area covers around 180
acres between South Elliott
Road, East Franklin Street,
Fordham Boulevard and
Ephesus Church Road. Around
$24,000 was allocated out of
Chapel Hills economic devel-
opment budget to market and
brand Blue Hill District, said
Dwight Bassett, Chapel Hills
economic development officer.
Bassett said the project
was first proposed to Chapel
Hill town council in 2011 and
there had been little invest-
ment in the area in decades.

Parker said its too early to
know residents reactions to the
areas new development, but
there have been some concerns
about the Berkshire Chapel
Hill, one of the larger develop-
ments in Blue Hill District,
because of walkability issues.
But on the other hand,
there are people glad to see the
area invested and are starting
to see some new retail, Parker
said. In terms of what the built
environment looks like, its
really kind of too soon to tell
how its all going to shake out.
Tom Henkel, founding
member of the Chapel Hill
Alliance for a Livable Town,
believes the form-based code
was contrary to what the
community wanted in 2014.
CHALT is a grassroots organi-
zation that opposes new devel-
opments in that they believe

protesters, or in some cases,
random people in their path.
In many ways, these are people
who simply crave violence, and
inject it into the ideology du
jour. All political violence is
dangerous and unnecessary.
Sure, certain antifa groups
have been romanticized as
opponents of the so-called fas-
cists of the far right. This cer-
tainly does not legitimize mili-
tias from the left appearing on
the streets to meet them. Our
taxes already fund those who
should protect us: the police.
Another troubling aspect
of antifa is their politics or
lack thereof. Just as plenty
of upstanding conservatives
loathe any association with
the alt-right, so should liberals
shed affiliations with the mili-
tancy on the left.
Moderates should seek
to remove themselves from
any association with these
groups and their ilk. Violence
begets violence, and to sup-
port antifa is to endorse their
radical worldview. The answer
to radicals is to elect officials
who are responsible and call
out violence regardless of its
origin. That is what democracy
looks like; not propping up
leftists that would make Bernie
Sanders blush.
The chaos in Charlottesville
resulted in a death. Violence
and murder are separate,

than we give it.
For the extremely suc-
cessful teams that they
are, we dont throw our
support behind them
like we do our aggres-
sively average football
team. This fall, we should
dedicate our time, spirit
and tailgates to the teams
with a legitimate shot at a
national championship.
In 2016, the mens
and womens teams both
advanced to the NCAA
Final Four, and just
missed a shot at a national
championship. In the
history of UNC soccer,
the men have clinched
two national champion-
ships, while the womens
team has brought home
22. The womens class of
2016 was the first since
the programs establish-
ment to graduate without
a national title, and theyre
back this season with a
vengeance.
If youre waiting for us
to tell you about the last
football national title,
the pitch. After the 2016
season, the mens team
named 14 (40 percent) of
their players to the ACC
Academic Honor Roll
and the womens team
bolstered an impressive 16
(53 percent) to the list.
The ACC Honor Roll is
reserved for varsity ath-
letes with a 3.0 GPA or
higher for the academic
year. (The football team
only had 24 out of 115
make the list, a meager 21
percent).
Both teams are well-
equipped for two more
fantastic seasons in
2017. The mens program
proved their right to a
no. 4 pre-season ranking
with a decisive 6-1 win
over Rutgers on Sunday.
But the competition is
only going to get tougher
from here with 6 of the
Tar Heels ACC oppos-
ing teams ranked in the
national top 10.
Similarly the womens
team won 4-2 in their
Sunday match, ending
USFs unbeaten streak.
This left no doubt that
they deserve their pre-

preseason top 25.
With competition this
stiff, conference play
this season could eas-
ily be decided by home
field advantage for both
squads.
Due to construction
at Fetzer Field, home
matches will be played at
alternate sites this year,
mostly the WakeMed
complex.
Both squads will need
to lean heavily on fans
support during this tough,
awkward transition sea-
son. Carolina Fever is
offering a free shuttle for
all students and double
thats right, double
fever points for every
match.
So grab your friends,
some cornhole boards, a
cold drink and tailgate for
some ftbol games this
fall because we all know
youre going to leave the
football games at halftime
anyway.
Tailgates are best when
followed by Ws, and the
real football teams will
undoubtedly serve em up.
Maybe it could have sug-
gested that a major differ-
ence between a developed
and less developed nation is
the governments ability to
provide infrastructure for
even its poorest citizens.
But that is not why I am
writing.
I am writing because I
am concerned that people
will walk away from the
article unaware of the true
evil at OWASA: its single-
minded campaign against
feces. Even as we speak,
workers are removing it
from our drinking water.
Why? Eating excrement
makes our gut bacteria
stronger and builds inner
peace. If someone is wor-
ried about health effects,
they can simply go and get
a prescription for antibiot-
ics I know I can afford it.
The government should
not be medicating us with
so-called clean water.

In an era where science
is more and more impor-
tant to public policy and
fake science is driving
bad outcomes, I was disap-
with so many conflicting
thoughts.
I knew that I needed
help, and that help couldnt
be obtained while I was
a student; however, the
thought that leaving UNC
would be the end for me
and any hopes for a life
beyond my little town in the
middle of nowhere battled
with these good intentions.
Throughout these two
years, that negative thought
crept time and again,
reminding me of every little
thing that could happen.
But, I defied it.
It has been one year, 10
months and 13 days since
I left UNC, but as of this
week, I am astoundingly
proud to announce that I
am a Tar Heel once more.
These two years have
been important for me, and
much has changed for the
good that I couldnt even
begin to touch on.
Whats important is
that many people at UNC
believed in me. Namely, Dr.
Maureen Windle, the direc-
tor of CAPS. Were it not for
the undying support she
and others give, I wouldnt
be here.
What makes UNC great
is its people, without a
doubt.

bad idea, and attacking white
supremacists validates their
desire to march and spew
more hatred. The corners of
society should not dictate how
the rest of us live.
Just because some of our
leaders seem averse to criticiz-
ing the fringe within their party,
principled conservatives and
liberals alike should condemn in
no uncertain terms the violence
that is now so prevalent.

While its something
of a youthful tradition to
malign the loftiness of our
current minimum legal
drinking age, we take
this proposal to lower it
seriously. After all, abuse
of alcohol exacts a huge
social cost on North
Carolinian society.
The most recent avail-
able chunk of Center for
Disease Control data on
the topic covering the
period of 2006 to 2010
shows that 2,767 deaths in
North Carolina stemmed
from excessive alcohol con-
sumption. Furthermore,
many studies have con-
nected a minimum legal
drinking age of 21 (as
compared to lower legal
drinking ages popular in
states during the 1970s) to
concrete benefits.
These include decreased
alcohol-related traffic
fatalities among young
alcohol-related tragedy
(and its a particularly
blunt one). A better imple-
ment would be a statute
restricting alcohol pur-
chase for under-21 adults,
rather than outright pro-
hibiting it a legislative
guardrail rather than a
brick wall.
Such a law would ban
18-to-20 year-olds from
buying alcohol in bulk
(i.e., any more than one
drink at a time) while let-
ting them purchase beer
and wine by the glass in
restaurants and bars.
The rationale behind
this reform is simple,
but well-supported by
research: the more expen-
sive alcohol is, the less
people drink. A crucial
secondary advantage
would be the pre-preemp-
tion of a trickle-down
effect (a feared conse-
quence of lowering the
drinking age wherein
voting-age high school
students buy alcohol for
their younger classmates).
This type of legislation
would still leave the stron-
gest argument for a hard-
