TOUCAN-T Needled Felt Installation Recommendations

These installation instructions are valid for the laying of needled felt.

With the publication of these installation instructions, all the previously published versions of the
Installation Recommendations are invalid in this regard.

Installation recommendations for the TOUCAN-T trim grades featuring synthetic double back, EcoWeb,
Ray-X, as well as SL carpet tiles and carpeted floor featuring the Uni-Back design (both broadloom
carpets and tiles) can be found on the Internet at:

1 General information

Relevant for the implementation of floor covering installation measures are the operational regulations DIN
18365 Working With Floor Coverings including the related notes in the respective latest edition.
Furthermore, the latest data sheets, DIN writings and guidelines must be observed.

In particular we refer to the fact sheets Assessment And Preparation Of Substrates, Installation Of Resilient
And Textile Floor Coverings, Laminate Elements, Parquet And Wood Blocks, Heated And Unheated Floor
Constructions published by the German Association for Screeds and Coverings, as well as the information
sheets created by the Technical Commission for Building Adhesives (TKB) of the Dusseldorf Association of
Industry of Adhesives.

This recommendation is complementary in the product-specific perspective and compiled in good faith
based on experience and tests. It cannot be guaranteed for completeness, accuracy and applicability in a
particular case. In case of doubt, separate tests on adhesives shall be conducted.

Our recommendations are state of the art of installation techniques, as far as known to us at the time of
publication. We have no influence on proper processing; therefore, it cannot be guaranteed for the process
results.

The processing guidelines of the manufacturers and suppliers of primer materials, filling and levelling
compounds, adhesives, etc. always prevail, even if our respective notes read otherwise in a particular
case.

2 Examination of the sub floor

The contractor shall examine and prepare the sub floor. Applicable are the conditions of the VOB DIN
18365, Part C.

Concerns shall be asserted in the event of:

major surface unevenness;
cracks in substrate;
not enough dry substrate;
not sufficiently solid or too porous and rough substrate surface;
contaminated surface of the substrate, e.g. oil, wax, varnish, paint residue;
inappropriate height of the substrate surface in relation to the height of subsequent
components;
unsuitable temperature of substrate
unsuitable indoor climate;
absence of heating protocol and missing marking of measuring points with heated
floor constructions;

3 Pretreatment of the sub floor

The sub floor must meet the DIN 18365 test requirements, as well as be clean, permanently dry, free of
cracks, free of release agents, tension- and flameproof. Moreover, any existing cement slurries shall be
removed from cementitious substrates by using suitable machines. It is similarly to proceed with anhydrite
or anhydrite flowing screeds, whereby the flooring surface shall be abraded and aspirated according to the
Association for Screeds and Coverings data sheet for brushing. The properly and professionally prepared
substrates must first be pretreated by using appropriate primers and sealers and then filled at least 2mm
thick by a suitable filler.

4 Examination of the carpeted floor

The TOUCAN-T carpet to be laid shall be checked for colour uniformity, pattern match and possible errors
before cutting. The test is mandatory in accordance with VOB/C 13, DIN 18365 ATV. Unavoidable
discrepancies due to production reasons shall be tolerated. To evaluate of the colour loss, a gray scale
according to DIN EN 20 105-A02 shall be used. The tolerances in pattern distortion (textile floor coverings)
at delivery are defined in the CEN/TS 14 159. We point out that after cutting the product no further claims
may be invoked.

5 Laying direction and cutting

Broadloom carpets are usually laid in the direction of the main window front. It however remains left to the
contractor to determine the laying direction by himself following the width of the carpet floor material and
the lowest waste of material if no different arrangement has been suggested in the specification.

In principle, the carpet tracks shall be laid in the same patterning and pile direction in one space.
Broadloom carpets featuring pattern repeat shall be laid pattern-equally.

Generally, the working edges of the broadloom carpet rolls shall be cut. Thereby it should be ensured that
the width repeat of patterned products will not be damaged.

To avoid colour differences in processing multiple broadloom carpets in one space, the carpets shall be
laid side by side in the same sequence as they have been cut from the roll. When dividing the broadloom
carpets longitudinally, either the outer edges or the centre of the carpet shall always be laid together.
When installing several rolls or sheets within a building or space, the production sequence of the individual
sheets shall be followed (and, when necessary, notes in the delivery documents shall be observed).

In principle, it should be checked before laying if the flooring comes from a factory production. This can be
identified by the batch numbers located on the labels. Possible colour deviations in the lining are only
entitled to claim before laying. The covering rolls are generally processed consecutively according to their
numbering.

Seam cut needled felt

Seam cutting of the lining shall be proceeded prior to bonding following the double cut method. For this
purpose, the needled webs are lined to overlap by some 3-5cm prior to their insertion into the adhesive
bed, then superposed covering edges are cut by a vertical section along a steel ruler. The seam section
taken along the steel ruler can be done either by using a straight blade, a large hook blade, or a special
seam cutter. Attention should be paid to trim the two web edges by a double cut. A lower edge cut is not
permitted. Stitching cuts in the adhesive bed are not considered to be an execution according to rules of
the trade. The same applies to the abutting of the original edges. The factory edges must always be
trimmed.

6 Laying

Toucan T-needled carpet should always be bonded over the entire surface. Thereby adhesives shall be
used which are suitable for the bonding of needled floor coverings. We recommend high shear solid
dispersion adhesives. In this regard, attention should be paid due to environmental aspects, so adhesives
of the group EC 1 (GEV-Emicode: very low emission) should be used. In this context, the processing
instructions of the adhesive manufacturers must be observed with respect to the application volume and
trowel notch size.

Following its insertion into the adhesive bed, the covering must be thoroughly pressed over its entire
surface using an appropriate platen roller. After about 15 minutes, a 50kg platen roller should again be
driven over the entire surface. Another 45 to 60 minutes later, both a final inspection in terms of a full-
scale, fixed and permanent bond and a second driving by means of a platen roller must take place.
Stitching edges must not be rubbed by a hammer or similar, since this may lead to bright markings in the
seam area.

It is essential to adapt the floor covering to the indoor climate before processing. For this purpose, it
should be lined inside the space for at least 12 hours before use. During installation, the relative humidity
in the space should be at 40-65%, but in no case exceed 75%. When processed, temperature of the
materials used (covering and adhesive) must show at least 18C. The temperature on the floor should be at
least 15C.

Repeat Pattern product can only be fitted by using appropriate clamping devices. Carpets are flexible
sheet materials which may show distortions due to their specific nature. It is the responsibility of the
operator to release the distortions by using appropriate tools (double head clamps, etc.) to allow the
patterns to match. According to the standards, certain discrepancies are not entirely preventable and
should be tolerated. Which discrepancies are allowed for the delivery state or after installation is listed in
the notes of the VOB 18365 procedures, Part C, Working With Floor Coverings, Section 3.4.5.

For items featuring pattern repeat, for which a relaxing of distortions may be necessary, the use of high
shear strength adhesives is recommended. This way, the tensions transferred onto the lining by using
doubleheaders and/or lever clamps are safely and permanently absorbed.

With small patterned goods, zipper effects can occur by the equal colour patterns meeting in the seam
area. This cannot be avoided even by the best professional execution. This is a typical product property as
described in VOB Part C, DIN 18365, section 3.4.5. Such pattern repeat shifts within the seam area are
considered state of the art and must be tolerated by the client.

A space unit basically ends at the doors. Head seams are only permitted with broadloom carpets longer
than 5m, where the neck length should not fall below of 1m. It is not permissible to lay head seams
continuously at a distance of above 5m in a row. Fragmentation of broadloom carpets is not permitted.

7 Carpeted floor and underfloor heating

All Toucan-T carpets are designed to ensure the use on underfloor heating in all cases.

8 Conductive laying

In computer centres and areas with special requirements, a conductive installation is often necessary.
Toucan-T carpets made from 100% polyamide with conductive fibres, dissipative latex backing and
synthetic secondary backing may invariably be laid dissipative.

Per 30m , a copper ribbon banner of 1.5m is applied to conduct, whereby 0.5m are not glued. They are
2

used for connection to the equipotential bonding (ground conductor). The connection must be performed
by a qualified electrician according to VDE standard.

The carpet is be bonded over the entire surface on the pre-treated soil with a bright conductive dispersion
adhesive. In this context, the processing instructions of the adhesive manufacturers must be observed
with respect to the application volume and trowel notch size.
