Time: 3 Hrs. Max. Marks: 100

1. Conduct an experiment on a hot vertical cylinder losing heat to ambient air in natural
convection heat transfer mode. Estimate the experimental and theoretical surface heat
transfer coefficient by giving different heat inputs. (100)

2. Determine the thermal conductivity of the pipe insulation material using lagged pipe

distribution diagram of the insulated pipe from inner to outer radii. (100)

3. Conduct an experiment on a hollow tube subjected to a forced convection internal air

flow heat transfer process. Estimate the experimental and theoretical heat transfer
coefficient for a fixed rate of heat input to the hollow tube and by varying the mass
flow rate of air. Plot the Reynolds and Nusselt numbers along the length of the pipe.

4. Determine the convection heat transfer coefficient and efficiency of a short pin-fin
losing heat to ambient air in natural mode. Calculate the convection heat transfer
coefficient for different rate of heat input values to the base plate. Estimate and show
the variation of temperature along the length of the pin-fin from the base plate in
graphical form. (100)

5. Conduct the performance test on a refrigeration system and determine the actual COP.
Also calculate the theoretical COP from pressure enthalpy (p-h) chart. (100)
6. Estimate the efficiency and effectiveness of a short pin-fin losing heat to ambient air

the volume flow rate of air. Plot the variation of temperature along the length of the
pin-fin from the surface of the base plate. (100)

7. Determine the heat transfer rate, LMTD, overall heat transfer coefficient and
effectiveness of a parallel flow concentric tube heat exchanger for at least three
different mass flow rates of cold and hot fluids. Show the variation of temperatures
along the length of the heat exchanger tube for both hot and cold fluids in graphical
form. (100)

8. Determine the heat transfer rate, LMTD, overall heat transfer coefficient and
effectiveness of a counter flow concentric tube heat exchanger for at least three
different the mass flow rates of cold and hot fluids. Plot the variation of temperatures
along the length of the heat exchanger tube for both hot and cold fluids. (100)

9. Compare the heat transfer rate, LMTD, overall heat transfer coefficient and
effectiveness of a parallel flow and counter flow concentric tube heat exchanger for
the same mass flow rates of cold and hot fluids. Show the variation of temperatures
along the length of the heat exchanger tube for both hot and cold fluids in graphical
form. Which type of flow is more effective for the same mass flow rate? Justify your
answer based on the experimental results. (100)

10. Conduct the performance test on an air conditioning test rig and determine the
refrigeration effect, actual COP and theoretical COP of the system. (100)

11. Conduct the performance analysis on a refrigeration test rig and determine the actual
COP of the system. Also calculate Carnot COP and Relative COP from the
temperature and pressure measured at salient points. (100)

12. Determine the emissivity of the given test specimen using emissivity measurement
apparatus by giving at least three different rates of heat input. (100)
13. Conduct the performance test on a two stage air compressor unit and determine its
volumetric efficiency. Also plot the graph between actual discharge and volumetric
efficiency of the compressor. (100)

14. Determine the Stefan-Boltzmann constant in a radiation heat transfer process and
verify your result with the known value of = 5.67 X 10-8 W/m2 K4. State the reasons
for variation, if any, in your experimental value. (100)

15. Conduct an experiment on a hollow tube subjected to a forced convection internal air
flow heat transfer process. Estimate the heat transfer coefficient by varying the rate of
heat input to the hollow tube for the fixed mass flow rate of air. Plot the Reynolds and
Nusselt numbers along the length of the pipe. (100)

fin from the surface of the base plate. (100)

17. Measure the thermal conductivity of the given test specimen using guarded plate
method by giving at least three different rates of heat input. (100)

18. Conduct the performance test on a single stage air compressor and determine its
volumetric efficiency. Tabulate the volumetric efficiency for different delivery
pressures of the compressor unit. (100)

method by giving a specific heat input. (50)
(b) Determine the emissivity of the given test specimen using emissivity measurement
