I. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Review
Before we begin with our new lesson, lets have a brief review of what we have learned
from the last discussion.
The Network Components/Devices
Routers are communication devices used to connect two different networks. A router
ensures that requests from within the network for information over the Internet are
distributed to the correct computer within the network.
Switches are a networking device used to connect multiple devices directly to the
network using wires/cables.
Network cables are used by routers, switches and LAN cards to connect each other
through wires.
The LAN (Local Area Network) card provides a physical connection to the network. Any
type of network activity requires a LAN card: the Internet, network printer, connecting
computers together. A LAN card is like a door to the computer. Without it, computers
cant connect with each other.
II. Motivation
1. What is this? It is a computer.
2. What is a computer? A computer is an electronic device that accepts data as input, processes
that data by converting it into useful information which becomes an output and stores it for
future use. Today, computers have come a long way from its hallow beginnings whether in
shapes, sizes and performance. There are several types of computers available in the market:
Desktop Computers, Laptops, Tablets, Smart Watches, Game Consoles like PlayStation and
many more.
3. How many computers do you see?
4. Now, how many computers do you see? What can you notice about the picture? Is there a
difference?
5. If yes, can you tell the difference? The first slide only shows three independent computers,
while the other one shows three computers with three double-sided arrows and a cloud.
6. What does this mean? This means that three computers are connected to each other
through the Internet.
7. What is an Internet? An Internet is a worldwide system of connected networks. Each
network consists of millions of computers, servers, routers, and printers.
III. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
Ask at least three (3) devices that can be found within a network?
Printers
Servers
Speakers
Monitors
Routers
Switches
Modem

2. Analysis
What is a computer network?
A set of connected computers. Computers in the network are called nodes. If connected
to a network, you may be able to share your documents, folders, pictures, videos and
some more.
How to connect computers together in a network?
Connections to computers can be done in either of the two ways:
1. Wired through the use of cables
2. Wireless through the use of wireless technology
What is network topology?
A technique of connecting computers. It also shows how computers are arranged in a
network.
What are the different network topologies?
Star Topology- is a design of a network where a central node extends a cable to each
computer on the network. On a star network, computers are connected
independently to the center of the network. If a cable is broken, the other
computers can operate without problems. A star topology requires a lot of cabling.
Bus Topology - A bus topology is another type of design where a single cable
connects all computers and the information intended for the last node on the
network must run through each connected computer. If a cable is broken, all
computers connected down the line cannot reach the network. The benefit of a bus
topology is a minimal use of cabling.
Ring Topology - A similar topology is called a ring. In this design, computers are
connected via a single cable, but the end nodes also are connected to each other. In
this design, the signal circulates through the network until it finds the intended
recipient. If a network node is not configured properly, or it is down temporarily for
another reason, the signal will make a number of attempts to find its destination.
c. Abstraction
Why is topology important?
It connects a variety of nodes from senders to receivers using lines of connection,
helps us better understand how computer network actually works and it reduces
the degree of separation between worlds.
d. Application
Let the students draw the different network topologies.
IV. Evaluation
1. What is a computer network?
2. What are the different network topologies?
3. What is the importance of topology?
V. Assignment:
1. What are the different types of network cables and its functions? Explain each.
