Position Summary
Princeton University is the Management and Operating Contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DoE)
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). PPPL is one of DoE's National Laboratories, and is a collaborative
national center for fusion energy research.
PPPL is seeking an Early Career Computer Engineer to support control, timing, and data acquisition systems for
the world class NSTX-U fusion energy research experiment with the mission to produce a clean, safe, abundant
source of energy. The hiring group provides the "front end" of computing for NSTX-U, focusing on subsystem
and diagnostic interfaces, and the support of daily experimental operations. The job entails a 40/60 split of
hardware and software engineering. Hardware activities employ a variety of CAD packages for chassis and
printed circuit board design, 2-D drawings for equipment fabrication and field cabling, use of electronic test
equipment, light electronic and mechanical construction, I/O selection, and producing documentation. Software
is split between LabVIEW/FPGA programming and working in collaborative Linux-based scientific software
frameworks, such as EPICS and MDSplus.
Essential Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in Electronic or Computer Engineering with 2-4 years' experience developing PC-based or
distributed control systems. The job requires an enthusiasm for both electronic engineering and practical
software development.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideally, the candidate will have software experience in a Linux environment, Linux administration and
networking, LabVIEW FPGA, EPICS, Mentor Graphics, C and C++. To excel in our diverse engineering culture
the candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate in a multidisciplinary team and travel
occasionally.
