It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.
Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.
I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.
It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.
The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.
The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.
I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.
Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

Alexander Bain
There are many names that are worth taking note of in the
world of philosophy and one name that deserves to be known
is Alexander Baina Scottish educationalist and philosopher.
He is also known as one of the most innovative and prominent
minds in different fields that include logic, education reform,
psychology, linguistics and moral philosophy. Alexander Bain
was also the founder of Mind and this is worth taking note of
since it was the very first journal of its kind to focus on
psychology as well as analytical philosophy. He was also the
man responsible for the application of the scientific method to
the study of psychology. At the University of Aberdeen,
Alexander Bain also held the inaugural Regius Chair position in
Logic. He was also a professor in English Literature and Moral
Philosophy. There were a couple of times where he was elected
as the Lord Rector at the School.
Early Life
It was in Aberdeen, Scotland where Alexander Bain was born
to Margaret Paul and George Bain on June 11, 1818. George, his
father, was a veteran soldier and a weaver. In fact, Alexander
Bain left school at 11; he got a weaver job and this is why in the
rex philosophorum, he was described as a Weevir. Alexander
Bain also attended lectures held in the Aberdeen Public Library

Academic Career
The year 1845 was a big year for Alexander Bain since he was
given the job as a Professor of Natural Philosophy and
Mathematics at the University of Glasgow. In 1846, he quit the
position and made more time for writing since he preferred a
wider field. Two years later, he decided to make the move to
London and took under Sir Chadwick at the Board of Health.

Several years after when he was 37 years old, he had the chance
to publish a major work of his which was The Senses and
Intellect. In 1859, he followed it up with another major work
that was entitled The Emotions and the Will. Alexander Bain
was a very busy man. At the University of London he worked
as an examiner in Moral Philosophy and Logic from 1857-61
and 1864-69. It was also there that he became an instructor for
Indian Civil Services and Moral Science Examinations.
Alexander Bain was a man ahead of his time and it was one of
his greatest triumphs that he got people to pay more attention
to the study of linguistics. In 1959, the subjects of English and
logic were not really a focus in Aberdeen so he put a lot of his
time and effort into rectifying any deficiencies. He not only
raised the educational standards in North Scotland in the
University of Abderdeen, but he also worked to establish the
School of Philosophy. His work at Aberdeen also influenced
the way grammar and composition was taught in the entire
United Kingdom.

Social Reform
Bain had a special interest in development and social justice. In
fact, he actively took part in social and political movements in
his time. After he retired from the Chair of Logic post, he was
twice elected as the Lord Rector at the University of Aberdeen.
He worked hard to advocate reform especially when it came to
how sciences were taught. He also supported the trust to
include modern languages in the school curriculum. He was
also known to be a strong supporter of students rights.
The last years of his life were spent in Aberdeen and in private.
He was married twice but never had any children. Alexander
Bain died on September 18, 1903 and his last request was that
no stone should be put on his grave and his books were to serve
as his monuments.

Given the choice, zebrafish willingly dose
themselves with opioids:(25th August, 2017)
Researchers devised a system that allowed zebrafish to self-
administer doses of hydrocodone, an opioid commonly
prescribed to people for pain, to study drug dependency
behavior.

cells for it to infect; or, it might persist but couldnt harm the
immune system to any great degree.
The success of using gene therapy to treat HIV rests on some
important assumptions.
The first is that all parts of the immune system must be intact in
order to support the stem cells in repopulating the system. Some
researchers suspect that HIV may damage the thymus. So, at some
point in a persons HIV disease the thymus may not help develop
new healthy CD4+ cells. Other therapies may need to be used to
improve or enhance damaged immune environments (such as the
thymus or bone marrow) in order for gene therapy to be successful.
Assuming that the thymus, bone marrow and other immune
environments are functioning well, the next challenge is finding a
gene that makes a cell resistant to HIV infection. Once it has been
identified, its necessary to get that gene into a cell. Some
researchers are experimenting with injecting these genes directly
into muscle, called direct DNA injection. Most researchers believe
that the most effective way to get a gene into a cell is by
packaging it into a virus. Viruses that scientists use to deliver
genes, called vectors, include the Adeno-associated Virus (AAV).
Getting a gene into a cell is no small feat. Not only must it be
passed into the cell, but it must be done without harming it. It
must also get into the gene without causing disease itself (and/or
without combining with another virus, like HIV, and then causing
disease).
In other gene therapy experiments for HIV, researchers have
removed and genetically changed stem cells. However, when the
new cells were infused back into the body, other immune cells
detected that they had been altered and destroyed them.
Therefore, its not merely a matter of getting the gene into cells but

doing it in a way that doesnt let the other cells target and destroy
the new cells.
Once a stem cell is changed with a protective gene, and it
remains functional and not targeted for destruction, the next
challenge is making sure the stem cells begin dividing and that
their offspring carry and use the protective gene.
While the ideal target for gene therapy may be stem cells,
researchers are also looking at altering their offspring CD4+ cells.
This would help rid at least one of the challenges in stem cell
research.
