This project is designed to give you a chance to have basic practices on some BIM software applications. You are required to create a 4D building model using appropriate software packages. Expending the 4D model into 5D is encouraged but not mandatory. You are also required to submit a short report to reflect your lesson learned during the modeling processes.
2.0 Project Description
2.1 Architectural Drawing Sets: There are four sets of architectural drawings available on the course Website. Each set contains at least architectural plans of a house; the drawing set may include additional drawings such as sections or elevations. You should select only ONE house to work out the BIM project. Alternatively, you can select any building project other than one of the four given houses to create the 4D/5D model. For example, you can create a model for your own house. 2.2 Missing Information: You can reasonably assume any information that is needed to build your 4D/5D model but missing from the given data set. For example, you can assume the floor heights if the elevation drawings are not given, or you can assume the thickness of the wall if it is not clearly shown on architectural plans. 2.3 Cost Information: You need to build cost items and assign costs to building components in VICO Cost Planner even you just want to work out a 4D simulation, because these works are necessary to define tasks later. If you do not want to work on 5D simulation, you can create simple cost items, for example, $600 per C.Y. of concrete foundation walls but skip all details related to labor, material, equipment for framing, reinforcing, concreting, and finishing. Please pay attention to the VICO Office tutorial lecture. 2.4 4D Modeling: 4D modeling is the minimum requirement. You can build your schedule by any scheduling/planning software such as MS Project then import the schedule to VICO Office. VICO Office has built-in function for scheduling and it will be demonstrated in tutorial lecture. 2.5 5D Modeling: If you are going to build a 5D model to include cost information, you only need to create a bidding document to show your direct cost and markups. You need to define cost information to the level of labor, material, and equipment for each component if you want to earn bonus mark. You are not required to do cost analysis (i.e. comparing different versions of cost plan), and you do not have to use the crew information defined in cost items to plan your schedule for 4D simulation you still can manually assign durations and dependencies for all tasks in a reasonable way. 2.6 Reference Cost Items: I will provide a reference project using the 3D geometric model we created during tutorial. The reference project includes some sample cost items in the level of labor, material, and equipment. You can use the reference cost items to build your own cost items you can reuse some information from the reference project. 2.7 Number of Tasks: You need to create enough tasks to reflect construction in a fair level of detail. Projects submitted with less than 20 tasks are NOT acceptable. You should not split one logically integrated task into several smaller tasks to make up the number of tasks. For example, you should not split the task of bathroom fixture installation into task of toilet installation, task of bathtub installation, and task of bathroom sink installation. However, you can have the installation of the first floor interior walls and the installation of the second floor interior walls as two tasks. Also, you can divide one floor into zones to get more tasks.
3.0 Project Deliverables
3.1 You are required to submit 3.1.1 The geometric building model file of your project. For example, if you create the 3D model using Autodesk Revit Architecture, you need to submit the .rvt file. 3.1.2 A packed VICO Office project to show your building model. You need to name your packed project file (.vico file) as FistName_LastName.vico. 3.1.3 A short project report (no more than 2 pages, 12pt, single spaced) in PDF to state your assumptions, justify your model and reflect lessons learned in the modeling process. Please include your name and student number on the first page of the report. 3.2 If you expend your 4D simulation into 5D, you may also submit 3.2.1 A cost plan generated by VICO Cost Planner to show your direct cost and any markups, if you are going to do 5D simulation. You do not need to submit anything in addition to your packed .vico file I will check your cost plan to determine any bonus mark. 3.3 Send you files to jinyue.zhang@utoronto.ca 3.3.1 Please zip all your files/folders into one package, multiple attachments are not acceptable. 3.3.2 Name your zipped file as FirstName_LastName.zip 3.3.3 Use CIV1298 BIM Project as the subject (case sensitive) 3.3.4 List names of all digital files submitted on the first page of your report.
4.0 Project Deadline
4.1 This BIM project is due on September 4, 2017 at 11:59pm. 4.2 Late projects will get a ZERO mark, no exceptions. 5.0 Resources 5.1 Please go to course Website to find architectural drawing sets, software download links, and training materials. 5.2 The computer lab has Vico Office set up, please go to menu Programs CIV+MIN VicoOffice.rdp to run the software. Revit 2016 is also available in the lab computer, under Programs CIV+MIN Autodesk Revit 2016. 5.3 A sample project House3.vico can be downloaded from the course website, you can also find this sample project in the Vico Office when you open the software from a lab computer. 5.4 A sample cost file for Quantity Takeoff Items is available on the course website. 5.5 A step-by-step guide for using VICO Office is available on the course website. 5.6 The installation of Autodesk Revit may take hours if you install it on your own computer and select all libraries. Please plan your time to download and install it.
6.0 Marking Scheme
6.1 Reasonable assumptions for any missing but needed information for the modeling project (10%) 6.2 A VICO Office model with reasonable details (50%) 6.2.1 A good number of building elements with different types (walls, slabs, windows, doors, stairs, roofs, columns, etc.) 6.2.2 Costs properly assigned to ALL building elements. 6.2.3 Properly defined locations and zones (zones are optional.) 6.3 A reasonable construction schedule (30%) 6.3.1 Tasks to be scheduled to reflect realistic construction sequence. 6.3.2 Reasonable task interdependencies. Some dependencies should be location-based. For example, the construction of external walls of the first floor should be after the construction of the ground slab. Normally the external walls of the first floor and the ground slab are in different locations (by default, each floor level is a distinct location in VICO LBS Manager.) 6.3.3 Reasonable task durations. It is not realistic that you schedule 3 weeks for the installation of bathroom fixture in a small house. 6.4 Good visualization of your 4D/5D simulation (10%) 6.4.1 Good color setting and viewing angle. 6.4.2 Good resolution and playing time (0.5-2 minutes for the animation file would be sufficient.) 6.5 Bonus for 5D simulation (an additional 20%) 6.5.1 Realistic cost information in the level of labor, material, and equipment 6.5.2 A good cost report with necessary details 6.5.3 Visible cost information along with 4D simulation 6.6 If you have earned bonus points, your total mark of this individual BIM project would not exceed the maximum possible mark (100%).
