steel and masonry and procedure of up gradation by strengthening or
retrofitting
Development of methodology for rating of bridges
Development of software for analysis design and drafting of bridges.
Use of high performance concrete in bridge structures etc.

B. Professorial Chair (Vehicle Dynamics)

The main objective of the chair is to promote research and development in

the area of dynamics of Rail vehicle systems. An important activity related to
the chair is dissemination of advanced knowledge and technology transfer.

The scope of work covers following area:

Wheel rail rolling contact problem

Interaction between railway vehicle and bridges
Train aerodynamic studies
Freight truck design.
Wheel Profile Design etc.

3. FUNDING MODEL:

Railways made an endowment of Rs. 50 lacs (for each chair) to the

Institute for creating a corpus fund.
Interest earned is ceiling limit of annual budget for supporting the chair

4. FULFILLMENT OF OBJECTIVES:

A. Bridge Chair

Dr. Akhil Upadhayay Professor, CED is working as professor of Bridge

Chair A meeting held on 23.01.15 at IIT/Roorkee, Discussion on areas

like health Monitoring, residual life assessment and suitability of

existing bridges for changed Load taken place.

B. Vehicle Dynamics Chair

Professor Satish C. Sharma is working as chair professor. A meeting

held at RDSO to discuss various project proposal as follows
a) Design a suitable compound spring for primary suspension of
HHP locomotive so as to eliminate the requirement of primary
vertical dampers.
b) Modeling of air suspension using ADAMs/NUCARS software and
validation of the same with the type test report of the air spring
c) Flexible body Modeling of the Railways Components and Car
Body, Integration with the FEM node Model of coach & its effect
on riding parameters
d) Conversion of existing track files to PSD files and correlation of
track geometry based on PSD values on the vehicle dynamics
parameters
e) Development of upgraded draft gear for freight stock.

IIT/Roorkee is under the process of formulating one project on Rail

Wheel Interaction, which will be taken up after submission of their
proposal.
