Demonstration of a Voltaic Cell

Voltaic cell used in research consist oh two half-cells, each with an electrode and an
electrplyte, separated by porous boundary. The purpose of this investigation is to
demonstrate the design and operation of a voltaic cell used in scientific research

Problem
What is the design and operation of a voiltaic cell?

Design
An electric cell with only one electrolyte is compared with similiar voltaic cells
containing the same electrodes but two electrolytes

Procedure
1. set up the simulation to represent a voltaic cell with the following materials :
Electrode Solution (1M) Electrode Solution
Ag AgNO3 Cu Cu(NO3)2
Cu Cu(NO3)2 Zn Zn(NO3)2
Ag AgNO3 Zn Zn(NO3)2
2. For each design, use the volmeter to determine which electrode is positive and
which is negative. Remember to use the refresh button between each simulation
3. With the volmeter connected, remove and replace the various parts of the cell.
4. Record the voltages produced for each cell combination. Potentials must be
possitive, if they are not the electrodes are reversed.

Observation

Electrode Solution (1M) Electrode Solution Cell Potential

Ag AgNO3 Cu Cu(NO3)2 +0,46
Cu Cu(NO3)2 Zn Zn(NO3)2 +1,10
Ag AgNO3 Zn Zn(NO3)2 +1,56
1. Label the diagram below to show the three identified voltaic cells. Identify
electrodes, electrolytes, electron flow and direction of iron movement. Label the
cathode, anode, and write the net cell reaction for each.

2. Indicate wheter the following processes occur at the cathode or at the anode of a
voltaic cell

A. Reduction half-reaction

2 Ag e 2 Ag
Cu 2 2e Cu
2 Ag e 2 Ag

B. Oxidation half-reaction

Cu 2 2e Cu
Zn 2 2e Zn
Zn 2 2e Zn
C. Reaction of yhe strongest reducing agent

Zn 2 2e Zn _ E 0 0,76

D. Reaction of the strongest oxidizing agent

Ag e Ag _ E 0 0,80

3. use the tool to design the voltaic cell with the greatest cell potential.
Explain why you chose this combination.

We chose the 3rd experimen because at that experiment have the strongest
oxidation reaction whic is Ag with E0 = +0,80, Zn with E0=-0,76. because both of the
strongest unsure is on the 3rd experiment
