THE TEACHING OF WRITING SKILL IN SIMPLE PRESENT USING THE SEQUENCE CHART

BY LEONORD JEFFERY

ABSTRACT

Sequence chart is a medium for activity that emphasized on drillings of writing SVO pattern simple
present with the aid of a graphic organizer. This action research aims to investigate the use of sequence
chart in developing the pupils SVO pattern simple present writing skill. The samples were derived from
a school located in the Penampang district where the pupils were less proficient in English. There were
eight pupils involved in this research. The data collected was collected using the following instruments;
interview, students works, observation, questionnaire and reflective journal. This is a two cycles action
research based on Kemmis and McTaggarts (2000) model of action research which involved a cyclical
process comprised of 4 steps; plan, act, observe and reflect. Initial survey found that the pupils were
unable to reorganize subject, verbs and objects in a simple sentence properly apart of using the correct
subject verb agreement. Cycle 1 aimed to develop the pupils writing skill in organizing the subject, verb
and object of a sentence in the correct manner apart from drilling the pupils on the use of correct subject
verb agreement for every sentence. Cycle 2 focused on the same purpose of cycle 1 with another task
which was designed to be more difficult to see how the pupils had improved from the intervention used
in cycle 1. Overall, it was found that the pupils had shown a good improvement in creating SVO pattern
in simple present. It is suggested that further research to be conducted in the teaching of other types of
sentence patterns using the sequence chart.
