A Process Model to Estimate
Biodiesel Production Costs
7. Bleaching Clay : an adsorbent clay that will remove colouring from oils.
9. Storage Tanks : a large ( usually metallic ) vessel for holding gases or liquids.
16. Aqueous : similiar to, containing or dissolved in water / ( geology ) produced by the action of
water.
21. Catalyst : a substance that initiates or accelerates a chemical reaction without itself being
affected.
22. Renewable Energy : energy generated without using up limited resources such as fossil
fuels.
23. Substantial : having a firm basis in reality and being therefore important, meaningful, or
considerable.
24. Crushing : use force to compress, making out of normal shape or condition.
25. Fatty acid : any of a class of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids that form part of lipid molecule
and can be derived from fat by hydrolisis.
27. Synthesis : the process of producing a chemical compound ( usually by the union of simpler
chemical compounds ).
28. Heat Exchanger : device that transfers heat from one liquid to another without allowing
them to mix.
29. Purification : the process of removing impurities ( as from oil, metals or sugar etc. )
30. Separator : an apparatus that uses centrifugal force to separate particles from suspension.
34. Centrifuge : rotate at very high speed in order to separate the liquids from the solids.
35. Ester : formed by reaction between an acid and an alcohol with elimination of water.
36. Distillation : a purified liquid produced by condensation from a vapour during distilling.
40. Evaporator : a piece of equipment used to evaporate the solvent from a solution.
44. Reactant : a chemical substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction.
48. Mixer : electronic equipment that mixes two or more input signals to give a single output
signals.
49. Greased : a thick fatty oil (especially one used to lubricate machinery ).
50. Biodiesel : a liquid fuel made from vegetable ( or similiar ) oils that can be used in a mixture
with, or substitute for, diesel fuel.
