The table of contents is most easily created automatically with REFERENCE tools within
WORD. Click on the following sequence: reference, index and tables, table of contents.
The chapter titles and section headers should have been set to create a table of contents. It
is important that the styles laid out in this template are used to maximize the benefits of the
template and MS WORD options. The table of contents can be updated as you revise your
thesis by using right mouse button and clicking on update field. With this approach,
there is no need to copy and paste or retype your chapter and section titles.

LIST OF TABLES
Please remove the texts in red which is given only as a guide.

The list of tables is also easily created automatically with REFERENCE tools within
WORD. Click on the following sequence: REFERENCES, insert table of figures, (find
caption label box set as tables). This can be updated as you revise your thesis by
using right mouse button and clicking on update field. With this approach, there is no
need to copy and paste or retype your chapter and section titles. You need to also use the
table captions within the body of your thesis (see examples below). The insertion of table
captions in this manner also helps because word automatically renumbers the tables
within the text when you insert another table in the middle. There is no need for you to
renumber the tables manually

Thesis Title : INVESTIGATE THE BEHAVIOR OF BEAM COLUMN JOINTS
STRENGTHENED WITH ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE
CONCRETE

Major Field : CIVIL ENGINEERING

Date of Degree : MAY 2017

Reinforced concrete frame structures that are deficiently detailed and not conforming to

seismic-oriented design codes present a severe risk from the aspect of overall ductility of

structure subjected to serious seismic shocks. The destruction caused by past earthquakes

fiercely indicated that beam-column joints (BCJs) are the most vulnerable and critical zone

of RC moment resisting frames. The ductility of the structure is controlled by the response

of BCJ under seismic activity. Therefore, strengthening of seismically deficit BCJ is

essential in seismic areas.

In the past few decades, different strengthening techniques had been developed. In the

present research work a novel technique has been introduced. RC beam-column joints that

are seismically deficit has been repaired/retrofitted and strengthened with thin layer of state

of the art magic material called Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete

(UHPFRC). The effectiveness of UHPFRC jacket as a seismic strengthening solution for

the damaged and undamaged exterior RC BCJs is experimentally studied and verified by

generating the non-linear finite element models. UHPFRC is an advanced substitute for

normal concrete. The entire test matrix includes seven 1/3 scale exterior RC beam-column

joints with no stirrups in the joint region. The experimental work has been divided into two

parts a) post-damage repairing/retrofitting b) pre-damage strengthening. The former set

xi
consists of three damaged exterior BCJs with different column axial load. These specimen

are repaired with 30mm layer of UHPFRC and retested under monotonic loading. The

effectiveness of UHPFRC jacket is analyzed by evaluating the load-displacement response,

max load carrying capacity, energy dissipation capacity, initial and secant stiffness and

comparison has been done with the corresponding values of the specimen in the virgin

state. The second set consists of four undamaged exterior BCJs. One of which is subjected

to seismic excitation without strengthening in its as-built condition as the reference

specimen. In this set two different techniques have been used for the application of

UHPFRC jacket. i) Sandblasting the surface of NC BCJs and in-situ casting of UHPFRC.

ii) Casting the UHPFRC plates of 30mm thickness separately and after their curing these

plates were attached to deficit BCJ using epoxy resins and special fillers. Two specimen

were strengthened using first method and one specimen is upgraded using second method.

All specimens have same geometry and reinforcement detailing. The efficiency of

UHPFRC jacketing in upgrading the BCJs have been experimentally evaluated under

reversed cyclic loading. Tests are displacement control and column axial load is kept 150

KN. The results of upgraded BCJs include load carrying capacity, stiffness degradation,

energy absorption and displacement ductility have been compared with the corresponding

values of the reference specimen. A comparison shows that this novel technique of

upgrading the BCJs is very effective in shear resistance, deformation capacity, delaying

the stiffness degradation and energy absorption. These experimental results will be justified

by generating the non-linear finite element models of BCJ simulating the seismic

excitations. Finite element solver named ABAQUS 6.13 will be used for numerical

modelling.

1 CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Please remove the texts in red which is given only as a guide.

Typically the first chapter is the Introduction. The main goal of your introduction is to

identify a problem that is worthy of investigation. It must also provide some idea of your

research goals and approach to research. Specific objectives can be introduced in the

introduction chapter or they can be saved for later after youve provided additional

background on the topic and state of the current research and its gaps. The Introductory

chapter often concludes with a summary of the organization of the thesis, including

identification of the general content of specific chapters and appendices.
