When Grandpa was still alive and living at Birge Hill with me
and my mother, he called me Carmela and hit me with the hit-
ting stick. It was a thick wooden walking stick he kept at the
front door just for hitting, just because he could. When Grandpa
was still alive, we ate sardines and canned tomato soup every day
for a year. When he died of a heart attack so sudden it was like
hitting the Delete key, the food got a little better, but not much.
The Social Service ladies came around for a whole six
months after he died, wanting to know what was in the refrig-
erator and if I got to school on time. They lectured us about the
importance of good communication and paying bills, and they
noticed if the kitchen floor was dirty. They complained about
how far we lived from town. They wanted me to cut my scraggly
brown hair and wash my hands more often.
You look like a boy, they said. Dont you want to be
pretty?
For those six months, we kept the floor clean, I went to
school, Keely kept an honest job, and finally the Department of
Social Services said we could be a closed case and they wouldnt
come around anymore. Ive always thought my mother and I
were just that, a closed casenothing ever changed. Not now,

The next day for lunch, Duck-Duck had a turkey sandwich with
mayo and a pickle. I got half the sandwich and half the pickle. I
dont think I had ever had a pickle like that, light green and sour,
not pucker-up dark. Then we had little cookies with grape jelly

When I was eight, Keely got drunk and ran her junk Escort into
a ditch on Guttersnake Road. The cops came all the way up the
hill to tell Grandpa.
Why dont you answer your phone? they kept asking.
Get the car towed, will you? And someone has to pick up your
daughter.
Grandpa only drove to Guttersnake because the cops expected
him to. I pretended to be asleep, because otherwise Grandpa
would have thrown me in the back of the truck and I would have
had to be there and watch the whole thing. When they came
back, Keely was bloody and cursing, and Grandpa was punching
the walls. I didnt know if Keely was bloody from running off
the road or from Grandpas fists. After that, she didnt have a car
anymore and she had to walk everywhere, like I did. If she had
been smart, she would have just walked home in the first place.
