CALL FOR PAPERS

The PSAS welcomes contributions for original presentation of papers and

posters in any of the following categories: (1) Anatomy, Physiology and
Biochemistry; (2) Biotechnology (Reproduction, Health and Nutrition); (3) Breeding and
Genetics; (4) Diseases and Diagnostics; (5) Medicine and Surgery; (6) Nutrition; (7)
Production and Processing; (8) Socio-economics; (9) Applied Research; and 10)
Undergraduate Thesis.

Abstracts of all papers which are accepted for presentation will be published in the
PSAS Convention Proceedings. The PSAS reserves the right to publish the papers
which have been presented during the Convention in the Philippine Journal of
Veterinary and Animal Sciences (PJVAS). Submission of a competing scientific paper
implies consent by the authors to have the said paper published, pending peer-review
process. Authors who intend to publish their paper in another publication after
presentation in the Convention should inform the Chair of the Scientific Paper and
Poster Committee and submit their research work as a non-competing paper.

Discounted registration fees for presenters of competing papers

Deadline of submission of documents: 01 August 2017 (competing);
01 September 2017 (noncompeting)

Qualifications

1. At least one of the authors is a PSAS member of good standing at the time of
application and Convention presentation. A member of good standing is either a
life member or a member who pays annual membership dues regularly.
2. The presenting author must be a registered Convention participant.
3. Researches to be presented should be original research papers completed within
the last three (3) years. The research should not have been published in any
scientific or popular journal or magazine nor presented either orally or as a poster
in any local, national or international scientific meeting (e.g., convention,
conference, seminar).
4. Any of the authors agrees to present the paper or poster during the PSAS Annual
Convention. Papers competing for the Undergraduate Thesis category must be
presented by the thesis student.

 5. All manuscripts submitted should comply with current animal welfare and ethical
guidelines. Submission of manuscript means that this study has complied with
the said guidelines.

Paper Submission
1. The following materials must be submitted electronically, either through the internet
or a compact disk (CD):
a) Completed Scientific paper/poster application form (see Appendix 1).
b) Full paper in Microsoft Word 2003 or newer version. Figures should be submitted
as separate files in jpeg format. Use the following filename format: Initials of
Category_Affiliation_Last Name of First Author and initial_Article Title (first 5
words). Example: DD_UPLB_Suba SSR_Detection of antibodies to feline.doc Use these
initials for the category: AP: Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry; AR: Applied Research; BR:
Biotechnology-Reproduction; BH: Biotechnology-Health; BN: Biotechnology-Nutrition; BG:
Breeding and Genetics; DV: Development; DD: Diseases and Diagnostics; MS: Medicine and

Undergraduate Thesis category, add U to the category above, example: ARU for

Description of Categories for Scientific Paper Presentation

Scientific papers, whether competing or not, will be classified in one of the following
categories:
RESEARCH CATEGORY
1. Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry (AP) includes gross and
microscopic anatomy, histology, histochemistry, embryology, general and
systemic physiology, reproductive physiology, cellular physiology and
biochemistry.
2. Applied research (AR) includes practical application of theories, knowledge,
methods and techniques for specific problems. This may include case study or
case report.
3. Biotechnology:
a) Reproduction (BR) includes reproductive biotechnologies or gene-based
technologies related to genetic improvement.

 b) Health (BH) includes animal disease diagnosis/diagnostics, animal vaccine
production/development.
c) Nutrition (BN) includes nutrient-gene interaction, metagenomics, and
development of biotechnology products on nutrition, excluding feeding trials.
4. Breeding and Genetics (BG) includes animal breeding, population genetics,
quantitative genetics, molecular genetics and immunogenetics.
5. Development (DV) includes projects or work outputs emanating from a
systematic application or adaptation of knowledge, technologies or innovations
directed towards the production of useful products, materials, equipment,
devices, systems and processes.
6. Diseases and Diagnostics (DD) includes microbiology, virology, immunology,
pathology, parasitology, public health and epidemiology.
7. Medicine and Surgery (MS) includes internal medicine, surgery, clinics,
diagnostic imaging, pharmacology, theriogenology and welfare.
8. Nutrition (NU) includes nutrition, feeding and feed resource utilization.
9. Production and Processing (PP) includes production, waste management
and utilization, edible and non-edible products, by-products processing and
utilization.
10. Socio-economics (SE) includes social well-being, economics, enterprise
development and marketing.
11. Undergraduate thesis includes undergraduate thesis in all fields of animal
science and veterinary medicine.

Paper/Poster Acceptance and Presentation

1. Only papers that conform to the Guidelines in the Preparation of Scientific Papers
and Posters (see Appendix 3) will be screened by the Scientific Paper and Poster
Committee. Those accepted by the Committee will be presented at the PSAS
Scientific Seminar and Annual Convention.
2. The Committee reserves the right to reclassify any paper into a category different
from that specified by the author.
3. The author for correspondence will be notified of submission acceptance and
assigned a specific date and time for the scientific presentation at the PSAS
Annual Convention.
4. The presenter of an accepted scientific presentation must be a registered
participant in the PSAS Scientific Seminar and Annual Convention. The
registration fee of competing paper presenters is waived; while non-competing
paper presenters must pay the full registration fee.
5. All presentation materials must not contain the name and/ or logo of sponsoring
company (e.g., pharmaceutical/ feed/ breeding company). Where the trade name
cannot be avoided, it must only appear in the MATERIALS AND METHODS only
once (see Appendix 2).
6. For scientific papers, an electronic copy of the oral presentation (in ppt or pptx
format) must be received by the Scientific Paper and Poster Committee through
the internet or through a compact disk (CD) on or before 01 Aug 2017 (competing)
and 01 Sep 2017 (noncompeting).

 7. The presenter must be present at the assigned date and time. For competing
papers, the presenter is allowed fifteen (15) minutes for presentation and fifteen
(15) minutes allotted for question and answer session. For non-competing papers,
the presenter will be given ten (10) minutes to present his/her paper with five (5)
minutes allotted for questions.
8. The decision of the Scientific Paper and Poster Evaluators is final.

Evaluation and Awards

1. Papers submitted for competition will undergo a pre-evaluation process by the
Scientific Paper and Poster Evaluators before the PSAS Annual Convention.
Only the top three (3) papers per category will be eligible for competition.
2. Presenters of competing papers will have their registration fees discounted. This
privilege, however, is non-transferable.
3. Researchers of papers that will not be selected for competition may opt to
present their paper in simultaneous scientific sessions with the rest of the non-
competing papers.
3. Selected competing papers for poster display will be judged at the convention
site during the PSAS Scientific Seminar and Annual Convention. The final
selection of winners will be conducted by the Scientific Paper and Poster
Evaluators.
4. The winners will be announced and their certificates and cash prizes will be
awarded at the Awards Ceremony at this years PSAS Scientific Seminar and
Annual Convention.

GUIDELINES IN THE PREPARATION OF SCIENTIFIC PAPERS AND POSTERS

A. Scientific Papers for Oral Presentation

Preparing your FULL PAPER

1. The manuscript should be in English, typewritten double-spaced on one side of
letter size (8.5 11) bond paper, using 11-point Arial font and a margin of 1.5
inches on the left-hand side and 1 inch on top, bottom and right sides of bond paper.
Pages should be numbered on the upper right hand corner of the page. The paper
should not exceed 16 pages, including Figures and Tables.

2. Sequence of contents of the manuscript - The manuscript should be organized in

the following order:
TITLE PAGE. The title page contains the title, author names and addresses and
institutions to which paper should be attributed. The title must accurately describe
the contents of the research paper. It should be centered, typewritten in bold, all
capital letters, and arranged in inverted pyramid. The title should NOT contain
abbreviations, proprietary names, chemical formulas, jargon and outdated
terminology.

The author names are typewritten in bold, lower case except the first letter, and
placed below the title. The authors should be NOT more than six and should follow
the following format: First name-Middle initial-Last name. An asterisk should be
affixed to the name of the author presenting the paper. A + sign should be affixed
to the author for correspondence. The complete postal and email addresses of the
author to whom correspondence should be addressed should be written below the
author names. The complete addresses of the non-presenting authors should also
be specified. Use superscripts to indicate author and corresponding address.

ABSTRACT. Typed as a single-paragraph, the ABSTRACT follows the title page.

The abstract must represent the content of all the main sections of the paper. This
section should briefly but clearly state the main objectives and scope of research
work, describe the principal methodology and summarize the main findings and their
significance. It should not exceed 200 words and should not contain figures, tables
and references to the literature. The title of the paper should appear above the
ABSTRACT.

 Key Words: Written below the ABSTRACT are a maximum of five (5) key words
or short phrases that can be used for indexing your paper. Arrange these in
alphabetical order.

TEXT. The text follows the ABSTRACT and presented sequentially with main
headings as follows: INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS
AND DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS and REFERENCES.
Secondary headings, if any, should not be indented, set in bold letters with only the
first letter of the first word capitalized. Tertiary headings, if any, should be
underlined, with only the first letter of the first word capitalized.

INTRODUCTION. This section introduces the paper, hence should include: (1) a
background that describes the nature and scope of the research problem
investigated (how and where the research problem arose) and how important the
problem is; (2) a statement on how the present study contributed to the solution of
the research problem; (3) broad information that defines the nature and extent of the
present work; (4) the significance of study; and (5) study objectives.

MATERIALS AND METHODS. The materials and procedures used should be

adequately and concisely described in sufficient detail that other competent
researchers can reproduce the study. This section identifies the type of study used
(e.g., survey, case-control, case series, cohort study, experiment), sources and
materials employed and important characteristics, sampling procedure, data
collection techniques/tools (e.g., records review, interview/ checklist, interview
guide), time periods, study setting, as well as procedures for assessment of data.
Statistical tests used must be cited and should specify the data analyzed. For
experiments, the experimental design, interventions used, and the number of
replicates should also be mentioned. The use of generic or chemical names is
preferred over trade names. However, if there are known critical differences among
proprietary products, the trade name, plus the name of the manufacturer and
address can be used. The trade name, if not avoided, must be used only in the
MATERIALS AND METHODS. Subheadings can be used when warranted (i.e. when
the contents under each heading are more than 1 paragraph). Authors should use
the System Internationale for the units. The common abbreviations are m (meter); l
(liter); g (gram); ml (milliliters); mm (millimeters); mol (mole); hr (hour); min
(minutes); sec (seconds).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. The results comprise the answers to the research
question posed in the INTRODUCTION. The data must be presented clearly,
concisely and logically. In discussing the findings, do not repeat but only interpret
the study results and observations; show how the results and interpretations agree
or contrast with previously published works. If necessary, inconsistency between the
present work and that of others must be explained. The shortcomings of the
methods used and the implications of the findings should be discussed. This section
may be divided into subheadings in the order of citation in the MATERIALS AND

METHODS section, for easier reading or to avoid confusion. This section can also
be divided into RESULTS section and DISCUSSION section.

CONCLUSION. Conclusions must be based solely on the study results. Before

concluding, the authors may indicate any principal limitations of the study, any
restrictions in generalization of the findings to the population, the accuracy and
precision of analytical methods and the effect of uncontrolled variables. This section
may include recommendations arising from the results of the study.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. This section acknowledges significant help to the work or

to the interpretation of the work received from any individual, and any outside
financial assistance.

REFERENCES. References should be confined to papers with direct bearing on the

authors research work but should exclude mimeographed references, terminal
reports and annual reports. References cited in the text of the paper should be
written by last name of first author or authors (for 1 or 2 authors) followed by the
year. If there are three or more authors, then the last name of the first author should
be cited, followed by et al. and year: e.g., Castillo (1986); Mateo and Billena (2000);
Lambio et al. (2004) or Lambio et al., 2000. All citations in the text should have
entries in the REFERENCES section. The entries should be listed in alphabetical
order. Each reference should contain the last name followed by the initials (without
comma) of the first name and middle initial (without period) of the author/s, year, title
of article/ chapter, name of journal/ book/ thesis/ dissertation/ proceedings in italics
and abbreviated, volume, number (where applicable) and inclusive pages preceded
by a colon, or place of publication and publisher (for books). Abbreviate the titles of
periodicals mentioned in the list of references in accordance with BIOSIS Serial
Sources (http://www.efm.leeds.ac.uk/~mark/ISIabbr/A_abrvjt.html). For electronic
references, site the author(s), year, title of the article, date of access and DOI or
website link (in italics).The author is wholly responsible for the accuracy of the
references. Examples are as follows:

TABLES must be typed on separate sheets of paper. Each table should carry a
table number and a brief descriptive title that is no longer than 15 words, placed on
top (hanging indentation by 0.5, justified both sides). Tables should be numbered in
the order of their citation (appearance) in the text and must replace lengthy
explanations in the text that may not suffice without a table. Tables must be strictly
limited in numbers and should contain only the essential data. Acronyms and
unusual abbreviations included in the tables must be properly identified using table
footnotes. A table should stand alone, i.e., it can be fully understood even without
referring to the text. To indicate significant differences among means within a row or
column, superscript lowercase letters should be used. Use vertical and horizontal
lines in both inside and outside borders of the Table. The size of the Table must not
exceed 7 in (18 cm) long and 5 in (12.5 cm) wide with font size not smaller than 11-
point Arial.

FIGURES (e.g., illustrations, diagrams, photographs, plates) should be few, camera-

ready (NO photocopies allowed) and placed in separate sheets of paper. These
should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the body of the paper and
provided with concise titles placed at the bottom, including a brief description of the
figures. Figures should be prepared at final size for reproduction with minimum type
size of 9 points, Arial. Illustrations, photographs or plates should be prepared in such
a way that it can be fully understood even without referring to the body of the
manuscript. All figures should be cited in the text. Illustrations should be attached to
or drawn on separate sheets with legends. Where necessary, magnification should
be shown by a scale marker drawn on the photograph. The figures must be
submitted in separate .jpeg files. The original source must be acknowledged if any
illustrations, photographs, graphs, etc. used in the manuscript have been published.
Written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material must be
submitted with the paper. Permission is required except if the material is in the public
domain.

(For eventual publication in the PJVAS: Photographs intended for half-tone

reproduction should be on glossy paper. As much as possible, only one half-tone

 plate should be included in the article. Color plates will not be accepted except for
very special cases and that authors agree to shoulder cost of color printing.)

B. POSTER PRESENTATION
The top 3 papers for poster presentation will be selected to receive a prize,
regardless of category/ classification. Use the following filename format: Initials of
Category_Affiliation_Name of First Author_Article Title (first 5 words). Example:
DD_UPLB_Suba SSR_Detection of antibodies to feline.doc. For poster presentation, use these initials
for the category: APBP: Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry; ARP: Applied Research; BTP:
Biotechnology; BGP: Breeding and Genetics; DDP: Diseases and Diagnostics; MSP: Medicine and
Surgery; NUP: Nutrition; PPP: Production and Processing; and SEP: Socio-Economics.

Preparing your poster

1. Size of poster panel per paper should be 150 cm (height) 90 cm (width).
2. The contents of the poster could be subdivided into topics but should fit within the
specified size of the panel.
3. Minimum size of the font: 25 mm for title, authors; 15 mm for headings; 7 mm for text.
This will enable the audience to easily read the display from a distance of 2 to 3
meters.
4. Fifty percent of the total display on the poster should be pictures, figures and tables
that would effectively convey the results of the study.
5. Make a note at the end of the poster, List of References available upon request with
the author/s.
6. The format for the poster display is similar to that for the full paper.
