1. Repair Strategy
When considering whether or not to repair the main drive pump or the two motors in your customers skid steer loader or multi
terrain loader, its important to remember not to over-repair. Over-repair means investing the money into the labor and parts for pump
or motor piece repairs when it may be less expensive to entirely replace groups of parts. When its time to make a repair decision,
consider several factors with your customer. What are the part replacement costs and labor rates? What is the cost of repair
compared to the machine purchase price? What are your customers expectations of the machine? How old is the machine? What
is the useful life remaining on it? The type of repair will also factor into the decision. Caterpillar recommends the following repairs
for the following pumps and motors used in the A and B-Series SSL and MTL.

Axial Piston Pump (A & B-series SSL/MTL only)

Repairs for axial piston pumps fall into four categories: minor repair of piece parts, major repairs using piece parts, repairs using
Cat Reman groups and replacing with new groups.
Seal kits and bearings are used for minor repairs. Major repairs on the axial piston pump include fixing the rotary group control
plate, cradle, relief valve and control cartridge. Keep in mind if several of the major parts need 100% replacement, your best option
is to use Cat Reman because the cost of new parts and labor may likely exceed the price of buying a Cat Reman pump. Use the
parts repair detail analysis on page 4 to help both you and your customer make the right repair decision.

Radial Piston Motor (A & B-series SSL/MTL only)

Repairs for radial piston motors fall into three categories: minor repair of piece parts, repairs using Cat Reman groups and replac-
ing with new groups.
Minor repairs involve seal kits, bearings, disc brakes and shims. Major repair is not an option for radial piston motors because the
price of the major repair parts would exceed the cost of purchasing a new group once labor costs are factored in. Using Cat
Reman group is still an option that will be less costly than using new groups. We recommend using the parts repair detail analysis
to help you and your customer decide.

Gear Pump for Work Tools (A-series SSL/MTL only)

This gear pump for work tool implements is mounted at the end of the drive pump stack. There are two repair options for gear
pumps: seal kit repair and replacing with complete groups. If major gear parts are required in the repair, using complete group
replacement is more economical. As such, Caterpillar does not offer major replacement parts (shafts, gears, bearing housings
and housings) as serviceable items.

3. Repair Detail Analysis

To use this repair detail analysis, access the mini-CD Microsoft Excel files included in this packet. There are several tabs listing
pump and motor new group part numbers. There are also comments inserted in the excel cells for more explanation on terminology.
This analysis includes our complete serviceable parts list offered for selected pumps and motors. Use this as a general repair
cost indicator to compare the price of piece part repairs, Cat Reman and new group prices. Caterpillar has provided potential
replacement quantities, labor hours and labor rates used for repair analysis. This is shown in the yellow cells.
As all dealers have differing repair capabilities and parts pricing, you must tailor this analysis to your dealership. Input into the blue
cells, your Dealer Net (D/N) and parts price uplift factor as well as your labor rates and labor hours to calculate final repair costs.
Use this to help you determine which repair option best fits your customers requirements.

For this motor minor repair, the Caterpillar potential replacement parts are shown in the yellow cells. When Dealer Z repaired this
motor, he used the same replacement quantities and labor hours to complete the repair. However Dealer Z has a higher labor rate
of $90/hour, and has a 3% charge from the parts department. The total cost of the minor repair using piece parts is $649, and is a
viable repair option for the customer rather than using a Cat Reman motor.
