Optimal Planning of Power Distribution

Networks in Rural Areas
Seminar Series on Selected Topics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering2017

Venue: CSSE Seminar Room 1.24

DATE: Friday, 7th April, 2017
TIME: 11:00AM - 12:00PM

Abstract
Power distribution networks in rural areas are often sparse and high in cost per customer. In
an attempt to minimise costs networks are configured radially, leading to reduced network
reliability. This presentation will discuss the optimal planning of rural distribution networks
through altering network topology and the consideration of distributed generation. The
optimisation algorithms discussed are applied to specific regional areas of Western Australia.

About the presenter

James Fletcher, student member of IEEE, completed his Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering with honours from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 2014. He is
currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer
Engineering at UWA while working with local network operators. His research interests are in
distribution system planning, distributed generation and genetic algorithms.
