Modern World History Project Notes

CHQ: How can we be involved with world history TODAY?

Objective: Explore and examine key events that took place/are taking place in Modern World History
and take action.

Topic: Womens Rights Today

History of Event: Since the beginning of time, women all over the world have been faced with the obstacle of
being a minority in general. But thankfully, we have made progress throughout this time. Morocco gave women
greater equality and protection of their human rights within marriage and divorce by passing a new family code
in 2004; Mexico passed a law in 2007 toughening its laws on violence against women; India has accepted
legal obligations to eliminate discrimination against women and outlawed sexual harassment in the workplace
and so much more. You would think that as time goes on, there would be more equality between men and
women. Unfortunately, trends are moving in the other direction. Thirty years after the adoption of the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, many girls and women still do
not have equal opportunities to realize rights recognized by law. In many countries, women are not entitled to
own property or inherit land. Social exclusion, honor killings, female genital mutilation, trafficking, restricted
mobility and early marriage among others, deny the right to health to women and girls and increase illness and
death throughout the life-course. shared Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General, World Health Organization.

Historical Connection/Significance to History: In recent years women began to see themselves as more
equal to men, demanding "equal pay for equal work" as well as p
ossessing more in terms of options and
opportunities even being in the workforce. Economically, women's economic roles increased in society,
however In 013, the global employment-to-population ratio was 72% for men and 47% for
2
women. This matters because women need jobs to not only having the responsibility of
caring for children, cooking, and cleaning, but also spending twice to ten times more time
a day on unpaid care work than men. In addition, while being on the topic of participation
and leadership, only 7.4% of countries have had female heads of states over the last 50
years.Globally, women make up just 23.3% of parliamentarians. This matters because
women have real influence over decisions. Efforts should be made to increase the
numbers of women in politics and decision-making by challenging the traditional gender
roles, attitudes and beliefs which limit women's role in public and political life.

Hmmm i think that could work.

A global survey of 1,119 womens rights organisation from over 140 countries showed that only 1 in 10
received funding from bilateral donors, national governments and international non-government organisations.
Meanwhile only 6.9% received funding from UN Women. (AWID, 2011)

Informal, community spaces and local women's groups are important arenas for
developing leaders, providing skills, experience, relationships and networks for women to
become public and political leaders themselves.
