Psychology of Tourism

Regardless of the decline in demand of general psychology in tertiary

education, applied psychologies together with applied sociology
(Deem, 1981) are becoming more popular than ever. An attempt is made to
shed more light on the teaching trends of applied social psychology in the
service industries, and specifically in hospitality and tourism education.
Beginning by offering a definition of applied psychology, service industry and
service management, the relevance of applied psychology in educating
students for management in hospitality and tourism industries is stressed.
The new curricula being suggested emphasizes not only the well-being of the
personnel in what is a very dynamic industry, but also the well-being of the
clients it serves. It is therefore argued that a knowledge of applied
psychology is indispensable for a manager entering into these industries.
