Work Card for Cleaning of Wooden Chairs and Tables

Materials : Soap jelly or powder


Cotton waste
Dusters
Wax polish
Polishing cloth
Min Gram (for formica tops)

Method : 1) Remove all superficial dust by dusting


2) To remove stains use soap dissolved in warm water and wipe with cotton waste till removed
Do not use a scrubber as this will scratch the surface. Do not allow soap to dry on the
surface as it will leave stains as the furniture.
3) Wipe dry
4) Apply was polish and buff with a polishing cloth, taking care not to allow the wax polish to
dry on the surface.
5) Polish the formica surface with min cream.

THE POLIVIT METHOD

AIM : Cleaning and polishing silver articles by the polivit method.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Washing soda (sodium carbonate)
Soap power / jelly
Water
Degchi and wooden spoon
Aluminium foil
Gas range

PROCEDURE:
i) In the degchi mix together washing soda and water (soap is also added where articles are dirty as well
as tarnished).
ii) Heat so that the soap and soda dissolve.
iii) Place aluminium foil pieces in the degchi.
iv) Put in the silver articles so that they are in direct or indirect contact with the aluminium foil pieces.
v) Allow it to boil.
vi) Carefully rotate the articles in the degchi and leave for 10 mins or more depending on the degrees of
tarnish.
vii) Turn off the fire. Remove the silver articles and rinse in cold running water immediately.
viii) Wipe the articles dry.
ix) Polish with a polishing cloth.

PRECAUTIONS:
i) Do not use this method for articles, which have stone settings in them..
ii) Intricate ornamental articles may requite to be scrubbed. With the solution in which they are immersed
using a plastic scrubber before rinsing them in cold running water.

Materials Required :
Bowls 2
Soap Solution (Medium Concentration)
Dusters - 4 / 5
Nylon Scrubber 1
Water
Min Cream (only if Polish is required)

PROCEDURE :
i) Remove the loose dust from the surface using a dry duster.
ii) In a bowl take adequate soap solution to clean the entire surface.
iii) Dip a clean duster into the soap solution and square out so that it is not dripping wet.
iv) Use this duster to wash surface.
v) For removal of stubborn stains use the nylon scrubber dipped in the soap solution.
vi) Rinse off the soap solution with a duster dipped in clean water.
vii) Wipe dry with a clean and dry duster.
viii) The surface requires use min cream.

FOR POLISHING WITH MIN CREAM


Apply the polish on the surface. Remove the polish using a dry duster. Give the final finish by buffing with a
flannel life.

PRECAUTIONS :
1) Ensure that the preliminary dusting is carried out thoroughly.
2) Do not allow the soap solution to dry on the surface, as it will form a sticky residue.
3) It is easier to remove greasy soil by using a strong soap solution made in warm water.

AND POLISHING TELEPHONES

MATERIALS REQUIRED :
Duster
Polishing cloth
Min cream
Duster
Cotton wool
Diluted Dettol solution

PROCEDURE :
i) Dust the entire instrument.
ii) Min cream on the instrument and the coiled wire.
iii) Let it dry for 5 minutes and then polish with a polishing cloth.
iv) Disinfect the mouth piece and ear piece with diluted Dettol solution applying I with cotton wool.

PRECAUTIONS :
i) Do not keep the receiver off the hook unless required.
ii) Squeeze out the excess Dettol solution. Do not let it drip into the ear or mouth piece.
iii) Make sure that the volume control is set proper at the end of the cleaning process.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Soft broom
Dust pan
Scouring powder (Odopic)
Floor scrubbing brush
Floor .mop
Large plastic bowl

PROCEDURE:
i) Sweep the floor surface. If it is an open stairway sweep towards the wall,
ii) Sprinkle odopic powder and water on half the length of the are leaving the other half for traffics,
iii) Scrub with a floor scrubbing brush if it is a stairway scrub both the head and the side of the step),
iv) Mop up the dirty solution with a floor mop.
v) Repeat the procedure,
vi) Finally mop up the entire work area with clean water.

PRECAUTION:
Do not put too much water as the whole are may become dirty and it may pose a safety hazard.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Plastic bowls - 2
Cotton dusters - 2
Nylon scrubbers
Soap solution
Scouring powder (odopic)
Tooth brush
Floor mop
News papers

PROCEDURE:
i) Line the floor with newspaper so that the floor does not become dirt while cleaning,
ii) Dust the tiles with a dry duster,
iii) Scrub the tiles with soap water and a nylon scrubber,
iv) Scrub between the tiles with a tooth brush.
V) Use odopic powder mix with soap solution for the lower most part of the wall in order to remove tide
marks, (left by wet mops)
vi) Rinse off the soap and wipe dry with a dry duster.

PRECAUTIONS:
i) Clean the wall in sections so that the soap solution does not dry up and leave the wall sticky.
ii) If the dirt does not come out with the above procedure. Use bleach or acid. When doing so use
protective gloves and proper footwear.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Dusters
Bowls - 2
Nylon scrubber
Soap solution
Wooden stool

PROCEDURE:
i) Switch off the lights and fans before commencing cleaning: Place a note on the switchboard indicating
Work in progress. Do not switch on.1 in addition turn the regulators of the fans to zero.

LIGHTS:
ii) For the lights, support the fluorescent tube with one hand and using a dry duster wipe the tube clean.
iii) Dust the holder of the tube,
iv) Clean the holder and the tube with a duster dipped in clean water and wipe completely,
v) Wipe dry with a clean dry duster.

FANS:
iii) Dust the fans with a dry duster
iv) Apply soap solution with a nylon scrubber and scrub free from dirt.
v) Rinse using a duster dipped in clean water and wring out completely.
vi) Dry with a clean duster Once done, take off the note from the switch board.
PRECAUTIONS:

LIGHTS:
i) Do not use a wet duster on a fluorescent tube which is still hot as it is likely to crack
ii) Do not take out the tube light while cleaning it in location.

FANS:
i) While cleaning the fans support the center of the fan with the palm of your hand and clean the blades.
ii) Protect the area beneath the lights and fans if essential using a dust sheet.

AIM:
Cleaning and polishing of silver articles using silvo

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Newspaper
Silvo
Plastic bowls
Dry dusters
Degchi (Vessel)
Water
Vinegar
Polishing cloth

PROCEDURE:
i) Cover the working surface with newspaper.
ii) If the article is clean, remove loose dust using a dry duster. If dirty, wash with soap solution and rinse
to make it free from grease and dirt. Wipe dry.
iii) Shake the can of silvo and remove a little on the waste cotton,
iv) Using the waste cotton, apply silvo all over the article by rubbing the surface as you apply,
v) Remove all the tarnish by rubbing cloth or a clean piece of waste cotton until the cotton comes off
clean,
vi) Make a mild solution of vinegar in warm water.
vii) Dip the polished articles in it for 2minutes and rinse them well.
viii) Wipe all polished articles, dry immediately with a soft absorbent duster and then buff with a polishing
cloth.

PRECAUTIONS:

i) Apply the polish evenly so that no place is overlooked,


ii) Ornamental articles may be cleaned using a toothbrush,
iii) Silver articles used for service should be rinsed in a mild warm solution of vinegar to remove remnants
of polish and smell of silvo.
iv) Do not apply excessive pressure particularly on delicate a as they will become dented.

WORK CARD FOR BRASS CLEANING

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
News paper
Tamarind
Salt
Bowl
Brasso
Waste cotton
Polishing cloth

PROCEDURE:
i) Cover the working surf ace with the newspaper.
ii) Remove superficial dust with a duster or if necessary wash the articles with soap and water to make it
free from grease and dirt. Remove initial tarnish by washing with tamarind and salt-deseed tamarind,
soak with salt in a little water and use the mixture for cleaning the brass article. Rinse and wipe dry.
iii) Shake the container of brasso and remove a little in a plastic bowl,
iv) Using the waste cotton apply a thin film of brasso on the surface of the article, rubbing all the time,
v) Take a clean piece of waste cotton and rub the article vigorously to remove the tarnish,
vi) Remove the tarnish completely by repeating this procedure till the cotton piece comes off clean and the
article shines,
vii) Finish off with a polishing cloth.
PRECAUTIONS:

i) Apply the polish evenly ensuring that no area is left out.


ii) See that all tarnish and polish is removed - pay special attention to the joints and crevices,
iii) Ornamental articles may be cleaned by using a toothbrush to reach difficult areas.
iv) Oily surfaces eg:lamps. Excess oil should be removed and absorbed with the newspaper. Wash with a
hot soap solution to remove grease. Rinse and wipe dry.
v) For begchis the inner surface must be thoroughly cleaned with a scouring powder prior to cleaning the
outer brass surface. It should be rinsed and wiped dry before polishing,
vi) After polishing, rinse in a warm mild solution of vinegar which helps get rid of traces of polish,
vii) Eliminate procedure (ii) wherever the brass is in combination with a surface that will be damaged by
water.

Work Card for cleaning Glass (Collins Method)

Materials required
Two dusters
Collins
Buffing Cloth

Procedure
1. Dry dust the frame and wipe clean with the duster
2. Spray Collins on the glass,
3. Wipe in overlapping motions until the glass id free of Collins
4. Buff with a buffing cloth

Cautions
1. Spray Collins from a slight distance or it will run down the glass
2. Ensure that no white marks are left behind

Work Card For Glass Cleaning (Newspaper method)

Materials Required
Newspaper
Two Plastic Bowls
Two Cotton Dusters
Soap Water Solution
Mild Vinegar Solution

Procedure
1. Dust the glass and the frames from up downward
2. Wash the frames with soap water solution if extremely dirty
3. Rinse off the soap solution with water, dry the frames with a duster
4. Fold the newspaper into a pad of your palm size
5. Sprinle water into which a few drops of Vinegar or ammonia are added
6. Polish the glass with a dry pad of newspaper

Precautions
1. Dust the glass and frames prior to putting cleaning solutions
2. Clean the frame prior to cleaning glass
3. Do not sprinkle too much water as the newspaper might tear and leave lint behind
