1.0 INTRODUCTION
The design note includes analysis & design of superstructure for Viaduct of four laning Road project between
Quazigund and Banihal of NH 1A in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The standard spans are proposed with
36.5m each. 39 numbers and 38 numbers of spans with 12.00m wide for Right carriageway and Left
carriageway respectively are proposed. The Design is applicable for all spans in Curve (Horizontally)
alignemnt. This report includes all details of modelling, Loads, Analysis, summary results, design and
detailing based on these forces.
The Super structure is proposed with Steel girder cast in siu deck slab type. Four Numbers of Longitudinal
girders with Cross frames at spacing of 9.0m are proposed. Cast in situ deck slab of minimum thickness
0.20m is casted on staging errected. The variation at Finished Road Level are achieved by varying the
thickness of cast insitu Deck slab. Uniform Thick Wearing coat of 65mm is provided. The deck is proposed
with 0.5m crash barriar one side and 2.50m wide foot path on other side. The carriage way and the deck
is designed for two traffic lane traffic.

1.4 METHODOLOGY
The simply supported span superstructure supported by POT-cum-PTFE bearings is idealised as 2D
grillage with Steel Longitudinal girders as main Longitudinal members and Cross frames, Diaphragms
and deck slab as Transverse members. The calcualted loads in their combination are applied on the
the Grillage and the structure is Analysed using STAAD software. The critical design effects on various
members are arrived and the members are designed as per IRC specifications.

2.1 IDEALISATION
The Structure is idealised as 2D grillage for analysis purpose.Longitudinal girders are idealised
as longitudinal members and cross frame diaphragms and deck slab are idealised as transverse
members to form the grillage. Members with neglizible properties (dummy members) are
provided where ever required for the purpose of application of loads. The grillage is as shown
below with supports and node numbers.

4.0 DATA FOR DESIGN OF POT-PTFE BEARINGS
4.1 INTRODUCTION
In the following basic data required for designing the various types of POT-PTFE bearings are presented for the superstructure under
consideration.
4.1.1 DATA
Material Type of bearings considered are: POT-PTFE type
Center to center of bearings 34.9 m
Number of bearings at each end of the span 4 Nos
Type of bearings at One end of the span
Fixed Type POT bearings 2 Nos supporting Internal girders.
Transverse Guided POT-PTFE bearings 2 Nos supporting External girders.
Type of bearings at Other end of the span
Free Type POT-PTFE bearings 2 Nos supporting all External girders.
Longitudinal Guided POT-PTFE bearings 2 Nos supporting Internal girders.
4.11.2LOADS
Loads as listed for design of superstructure are considered.
Live loads are cosidered with impact factors relavent for Steel Bridges.
4.1.3 METHODOLOGY
The reactions arrived from the analysis for Superstructure are considered as data for design of bearings.
4.1.4 REFERRENCES
Loads and Stresses IRC:6-2010
Design of POT-cum-PTFE bearings IRC:83 Part III -2002
4.2 ANALYSIS
The same analysis carrried for superstructure is considered for arriving the loads for the bearings.

4.2.1.3HORIZONTAL LOADS
A) LONGITUDINAL HORIZONTAL FORCES
Longitudinal Horizontal forces are due to Braking action of vehicles.
This forces are calculated as per IRC:6
The Horizontal forces due to Seismic action are considered to be resisted by the Seismic Restrainers provided on the pier.
As per IRC:6-2010 Maximum Longitudinal force due to braking for three lane traffic is as below.
For the First two lane traffic
Load applicable is of only one lane. Refer Clause 212 (a) of IRC:6-2010
Horizontal load is equal to 20% of one lane of load on the span
Load of one lane on span = 543.5 KN
Hence Longitudinal horizontal force due to braking = 108.7 KN
4.2.1.3.2
TRANSVERSE HORIZONTAL FORCES
A) The Transverse Horizontal force calculated in section 2.5.1.1 of Substructure design note is consiered acting on the
superstructure
Total transverse horizontal force due to Wind on superstructure = 483.00 kN
Number of Bearings resisting this Horizontal load
= 4 Nos
4.2.1.4ROTATIONS
The Rotations are considered from the analysis for the superstructure.
It is found that the maximum rotations are in the order of .001 radians
As the values are low avalue of 0.01rad is considered for design purpose.
4.2.1.5MOVEMENTS
Movements are due to Thermal, creep and shrinkage.
Expansion movements are due to Thermal only
Contraction movements are due to Thermal, creep and shrinkage.
Coefficient of Thermal expansion = 1.20E-05 per deg centigrade
Considering the temparaure variation as 25 deg the strain coefficient due to temparature
= 3.00E-04
Creep strain with 50% matured concrete = 8.30E-04
Shrinkage strain for the concrete at age 14 days
= 2.50E-04

Contraction movements are due to Thermal, creep and shrinkage.
Coefficient of Thermal expansion = 1.20E-05 per deg centigrade
Considering the temparaure variation as 25 deg the strain coefficient due to temparature
= 3.00E-04
Creep strain with 50% matured concrete = 8.30E-04
Shrinkage strain for the concrete at age 14 days = 2.50E-04

The critical section for Shear is considered at inner face of the pedestal of outer bearing.
The design for Shear is carried out as per clause 10.3.3.2 of IRC: 112-2011.
The sections are proposed with Vertical shear reinforcement.
