TITLE : CUBE TEST

AIM : To determine the cubic strength of concrete after 21 days.

INTRODUCTION :

The compressive strength of concrete is a measuring for judging the

quality of concrete characteristic strength of concrete based on 21 days cubic strength. That the
crushing strength of the standard 150 mm cube at an age of 21 days after mixing. If the size of the
aggregate does not exceed 25mm, 100 mm cubes can be used.

APPARATUS : Compression testing machine.

PROCEDURE :

1. Before placing the concrete cube, all testing machine bearing surfaces were wiped clean.

2. Loose grit of other extraneous material was removed from the surfaces of the concrete
cube which would be in contact with platens.

3. The concrete cubes were carefully centered on the lower platen and it was ensured that the
load would be applied to two opposite cast faces of the cub.

4. The load was applied without shock continuously at a nominal rate until no greater load
could be sustained
OBSERVATION :

Table : Cracking load and strength of test cubes

Cube No Load / (kN) Strength/(N/mm2)

1 902.5 40.1
2 1138.0 50.6
3 892.7 39.7

CALCULATION :

Average cube strength (21 days) = (40.1+ 50.6 + 39.7) / 3

= 43.5 N/mm2

Cylinder strength (21 days) = 43.5 x 0.8

=34.8 N/mm2
TITLE :CONCRETE CYLINDER TEST

AIM : To determine cylindrical compressive strength of the concrete

INTRODUCTION :The concrete cylinder test is also used to measure to compressive strength
and also tensile strength of concrete.

APPARATUS :Universal Testing Machine

Dial gauge constant = 0.001 mm

TABLE 11:

Strain gauge reading Left side /(div) Right side /(div)

Final 25 24

Consider effective height =160mm

Applied load =602.5 kN
CALCULATION:

Strain gauge reading difference

Left side = 25 div

Right side = 24 div

Average reduction of heigh t = (24+25)/2

= 24.5 div

Displacement = 24.5x0.001
=0.0245 mm

a- b = 0.0245/160
= 1.53x10-4

b = (2x0.001) /160
= 2.5x10-5

Upper loading stress a = f cu / 3

= 43.5/3
=14.5 N/mm2

Basic stress, b =0.5 N/mm2

Static modulus of elasticity, E = /
= (a- b)/ (a- b)
= (14.5-0.5) / (1.54x10-4)
= 9.1x104N/mm2

Tensile strength = (22362.1x9.81)/(300x150)

= 4.87 N/mm2

RESULTS :

Static modulus of elasticity = 9.1x104N/mm2

Tensile strength = 4.87N/mm2
