Now that both Ona and Antanas are dead, Jurgis makes a decision to leave the city and to become
free. He walks past the train keepers shed and jumps on the freight car heading out of the city and into
the country side.

52. The cleansing symbolizes a born again moment for Jurgis. It symbolizes a new era for Jurgis where
he will no longer be a slave.

53. Taking a train to an unknown destination shows that Jurgis has started to think for himself. It shows
that he has had it with all the abuse, and that he will now start taking matters into his own hands. It
shows his rejection to continuing to be a slave and that its time to become free.

54. To thwart the power of the teamsters union by connecting all of the big factories and stores.

55. Here is an example: They were trying to save their souls and who but a fool could fail to see that
all that was the matter with their souls was that they had not been able to get a decent existence for

57. one of the changes revealed in Jurgis character during this chapter is that after being an honest
person, he is now a criminal with full intent. He wants to steal the money from the drunk man. He
pockets the one hundred dollars and is waiting for another opportunity to take all the money from the
young man.

59. Jurgis was introduced to a political worker named Buck Halloran. He was excellent at keeping quiet
while picking up pay envelopes which earned him the trust of Buck Halloran as a man who could be
depended upon.

60. In the sense that its ironic. A democratic leader, Mike Scully, wants Scotty Doyle, a republican
candidate, to be elected.

61. Because he was convinced by Scully that after the strike is over, and it will be over soon, the packers
will need men, and they will stand by someone who stood by them during a strike. That way, Jurgis will
get to keep his job.

62. An example is when Jurgis accepts a bribe from a man who is cheating by registering for two jobs
and then continuing to receive payments from other men who are cheating the packers.

63. Because after Jurgis is arrested again for beating Connor, Harper negotiates the bail to 300, which is
then paid by Jurgis. Harper tells Jurgis that he needs to leave the town, so he leaves to the other side of
Chicago with only few dollars left.
64. She symbolized the fate of those who didnt embrace socialism. It shows how they were destroyed
for not willing to conform to the socialist viewpoint.
